Mass Burial Given To Bodies In Ezu River by leonshom(m): 5:58am On Jan 22, 2013
Report reaching elombah.com say mass burial was given to the recovered dead bodies from the Ezu River yesterday. Myths surrounding the dumping of over 50 lifeless bodies at the Ezu River Ugwuoba, Enugu state, a boundary town to Amansea , Awka North Anambra state has continued to draw sharp reactions from Nigerians. Reports say

This is coming as Mass burial was given to the recovered dead bodies from the Ezu River yesterday after an unverified autopsy. The Commissioner for Health, Dr Ikeakor led the state team to the mass burial while the Chairman of Awka North Hon Joy Enweluzor and Secretary to the Council Hon Paul Nnatuanya led the council staff to the burial.

An indigene of the area who witnessed the mass burial told elombah.com; “Yes Elombah, mass burial was given to them and it very unfortunate and Sad....That's Nigeria for you."

Commenting on the development, a London based lawyer from the state said: “It is disappointing to learn mass burial has already taken place without efforts made to determine their identity and cause of death or to unravel the Myths surrounding the dumping of over 50 lifeless bodies at the Ezu River Ugwuoba , Enugu state, a boundary town to Amansea, Awka North Anambra state. If we lack the expertise to investigate the death, why not involve international organisation?”

Continuing he said; “I remember that when the headless and limbless body of a five or six-year-old child, was found near Tower Bridge, London in September 2001, the UK police spent millions of pounds to investigate. When Forensic tests, involving samples taken from the bones, linked the boy to West Africa and subsequently to Nigeria, Officers investigating the case visited Nigeria in search of his roots. Now more than 50 unidentified corpses discovered and we rush to give them mass burial? Sad! Sad!! Sad!!!"

Shocking Discovery Of Possible Victims Of SARS Extra-judicial Killings:

In a Public Statement By The Intersociety Nigeria, dated 21 January 2013 and signed, their Chairman,
Emeka Umeagbalasi, the group noted for their meticulous investigative reports said: “IGP Abubakar should also investigate thoroughly and conclusively the recent shocking discovery of dozens of corpses inside the Amansea (Ezu) River, in Awka, Anambra State by the local residents on Saturday, January 19, 2013. The River is located between the borders of Anambra and Enugu States. Since there is no known intra and inter communal violence or conflict in the area, it is most likely that the corpses are victims of extra-judicial killings by SARS (Special Anti Robbery Squad) operatives in Anambra State. More so when little or nothing is heard of the prosecution, conviction or acquittal of those arrested for their involvement in violent crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping and culpable murder, particularly after they have been paraded. They are rarely arraigned and prosecuted in courts. In November 2005, over 20 detained citizens were massacred by the Awka CPS SARS and dumped in the area (Agu-Awka). Therefore, every logical indication points in the direction of the Anambra State SARS and the Anti Kidnap squads as the source of the dead bodies. The IGP should order that the corpses be pathologically investigated to determine their style of killing and circumstances under which they were killed.”

Its saddening how people act inhuman sometimes. If it were their family members, they would have carried out more investigations.

Where are our pathologists/scientists??

No one cares about unfamiliar dead bodies here anyway.

Why is it saddening? Do you want them to put 50 decomposing corpse in a morgue?...they need to pick out four or six and conduct tests on them. Those remains where dumped there by a morgue that the remains were probably overwhelming. If you have been to a morgue then you'll agree with me.

Not even something as simple as an autopsy? Lagos has an office of the coroner. Can't they learn from us? This just shows a shallow minded government. Crap!

[b]That is Nigeria for you..... This line from the main article was priceless.

So some lifeless bodies were found floating on a river and the police were called in..

The police comes with a pick-up truck I guess and callously load the dead into the back of the truck with zero regard for preserving whatever evidence might still be on the bodies.

The Bodies are moved to a morgue somewhere and tossed into the fridge.

The Police combs Ezu Village, arresting whosoever they like for questioning. All the wrongfully arrested parties would have to Pay the police to post bail which is supposed to be free.

The coroner is too lazy to carry out an autopsy on all 30 bodies (especially as he wouldnt be paid specially for it) so he takes a cusury glance at the bodies and writes in his report Cause of death inconclusive or drowning since they were found in a river.

The Police never even bothered to take pictures of the dead and put them up on the News or dailies with the hope that someone out there might recognise one of the faces and call them. These 50 bodies all had relatives somewhere that might want to know where their persons were buried atleast!

I pretty much doubt if finger prints were taken off of the deceased for futher investigations.

The report is trying to imply that they might be victims of extra-judicial killings. If so, there would be clear and visible bullet wounds on the victims. And if thats the case, then I dont think that this is a case that should be closed in this manner.

The bodies were found on saturday I believe.. The Police and Government have already given the bodies a mass burial in barely 72hours.. The Nigerian Police has concluded investigations into a potential mass murder case in 72 hours.. The Coroners office couldnt possibly have carried out a proper autopsy on all 50 bodies in 72 hours.. But like the article said and I quote again,"THAT IS NIGERIA FOR YOU"

They should have first conducted series of investigations b4 rushing to bury them, at least to trace their identities and where they came from. I bet you familiy members of some of them might be looking for them and even reading this news without knowing that their kit and kin are the people in the sad news.

They said they picked only 3 corpses for autopsy, now what is the result of the autopsy? we haven't been told either

50 Corpses no one has come out to claim any, no missing persons reports? who knows whether there are similar crimes being committed regularly elsewhere. innocents just get killed and no one really gives a damn. We live in a Nigeria where Evil is so comfortable they can slap Security and Justice System in the face while they commit heinous crimes.. the masses have become prey for the criminals in this nation.

Up Lagos dickhead. Anambra has an office of the coroner as well. They selected three corpses for autopsy and more. The others according to police are beyond working with. So smoke your Lagos and its coroner office.

The truth is that the government care less about the citizens and their welfare.
The only thing they need us for is election, after that, everyone can die and will be buried like goat.
They should learn from advanced countries where cause of deaths are unravelled with latest and expensive technology
Anyway, is it the country that didn't make effort to keep people alive that will care to find out the cause of their death at all cost?
As big as Nigeria is, there is no heart and kidney transplant center and a lot of young and old people are dying of this alment daily.
In this case, I perceived the government is trying to cover up something.
I am deeply sad about Nigeria!

I weep for this country. Even our president cannot intervene. In saner countries, the handling of this event alone can make people lose elections. Heads would have rolled in certain government departments and jobs would have been lost. Law enforcement position holders would have resigned since they could not come up with an answer. Not in Nigeria. Anything goes and everything is normal. Next story please.

Mine is, if those victims were killed by the police bc they were kidnappers or involved in armed robbery, I think the govt and police did the right time. But if thy were innocent people, then, I am sorry for us. Unfortunately, there is no way to ascertain whether or not the bodies were those of criminals.

Many people will worry at my comment, but if you have gone through the harrowing and traumatizing experience of being kidnapped or being an immediate relative of a kidnapped person, you would appreciate that those guys are not worthy to live. Our legal system is also not trust-worthy to discharge the expected and appropriate justice.

And sadly, if the police murder school of thought is the case, I wonder why such cannot be meted to BH terrorists. In God we trust.

If you pick out four or six, how will you determine the identity of others? Or are they from same familly? ThiS is a special case so what does it take government to provide a special place for the corpses to be preserved pending the outcome of investigations?

You really talk sense, the police knew what happened because there's no way you give a mass burial to 50 bodies in 72 hours if you don't know the cause of their death

so to you; dumping of dead bodies in the river should be the appropriate way of de-congesting the morgue? undecided

We have a law in Nigeria and even if the deceased committed crimes beyond our imagination, must they dump their bodies inside the river that serve as a source of living to more than 10 communities?

I seriously suspect foul play in this matter from the NPF sad

It baffles me on the state of affairs and how things are being done in Nigeria. The burial of 50 lifeless bodies found at Ezu River conflicts with everything humanity and international organisations like U.N stands for.The investigation is still inconclusive, yet the corpses are buried. What a nation so backward in thinking and activism!!!I am absolutely certain that the representatives of Human Rights Organisations would have taken to streets across the nation to protest this barbaric decadence, had it been this unfortunate act occurred in United State or London per se.In my candid advice as a legal practitioner,I suggest someone that has a locus standi in this case should bring action against the government of Anambra State. So Sad!!!

Police ran out of money for investigation, hence the short-cut.

How can Nigerians require the Police to conduct such a sophisticated investigation that require huge budget while their trainees are sharing one fish (Sardine) per fifty persons?

Free the Police joor..
