I am a satellite researcher and enthutiast. I would like to generate a thread exclusively on the satellites that have their footprint and fringe signals in Africa. What is satellite footprint? Satellite footprint simply means satellite coverage. It means the entire area a particular satellite signal can be received with the possible smallest size of dish.

The knowledge of satellite footprint is so vital in the search of new satellite signals that can be received in a particular region. The fact is you can only receive signal from the satellites that have their footprint in your area with the required smallest size of dish.

However, this never means that SOME of those who are out the footprint of a particular satellite cannot receive it. They can but they will only need dish of bigger sizes which may range from 1.8m to 8m size of dish depending on how fringe/weak the satellite signal is in their area. I said SOME and not All because not every part of the whole world can have a signal of a particular satellite at the same time.THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE! Some that are out of the footprint of a satellite can receive the fringe signal of the satellite while some will not be able to do so at all.

Why? Simply because the earth is spherical and not linear. Just as the whole world cannot experience day or nigth at the same time because only portion of the earth receives sunligth at a particular point in time, the whole world cannot have the footprint of any particular satellite.

There are two ways you can know if you will be capable of receiving the signal of any particular satellite. 1. Check weather your area is under the footprint coverage of the satellite to you want to hunt. Lyngsat has made it easier for the satellite engineers all over the world as they have on their website the footprint of over 160 satellites that litter the surrounding of the earth in the space. Just visit www.lyngsat-maps.com. 2. If your area is not under the coverage of the footprint,you may likely be able to get the fringe signals of the satellite with bigger dishes but only if your azimuth is not a negative value. How to calculate azimuth, i will state as the thread continues.

You will be surprised that africa have so much limited their satellite search to the common dstv,multi tv,mytv,nilesat,hotbird when there are greater number of european and asian satellite we can hunt for most of which are FTA. I will list all these satellites as the thread continues. Viva FTA
