To say 'Happy Birthday' to Shehu Shagari is to commit tautology. He's a very happy man, having ruled Nigeria for sometime, and still getting fat monthly pays from the Nigerian coffers.

You're a good man, sir, but you won't be remembered as a great leader. The Second Republic needed a leader who would take the bull by the horns, take a tough stance against corruption and impunity, and clean up the system. Unfortunately you failed to make this happen.

The profligacy and mindless waste/stealing of public funds perpetrated by officials in your administration, coupled with NPN's blatant rigging of the 1983 elections, gave the military a perfect pretext to stage yet another coup which set us back by another couple of decades.

One can only hope that leaders of the present age have learnt from your mistakes.

But did the anti-establishment, anti-corruption regime that followed last. We've had a taste of both sides but seem not to be able to make up our minds. Just like the recent dispensations. OBJ - too harsh, too vindictive, not a democrat. Well in steps UMY/GEJ, - too soft, too slow, pliable.
