miqos02: @afroca: i mean baby snails, how do i source for their food, i know they eat cocoa leaves and come fruits but are there feeds that boost their growth?
snails have a steady growth and their growth mostly is nt determined by what they eat compared to their environment and calcium intake. They even eat sh**t and stil grow,no formular for their growth that is known by me,is in d Nigerian market. However, their environment affects their growth if thɛy re overcrowded. Again, their calcium intake is a very vital stuff for their growth, cos thats wat helps their shell grow and if the shell doesnt grow,is nt strong and nt looking polished,d snail meat inside wil portray those signs. Gdluck. Let me knw wen u r comin to pick up your baby snails.

I have noticed a remarkable growth in the sizes of my baby Fulica.
and also within the group, there is a marked difference, the ones that eat more are generally bigger and more active.
When feeding them, I try to stay back to actually observe their eating and feeding pattern.
Will upload pictures soon.

My Fulica seems to really enjoy feeding on the fresh thinly sliced cucumber and even pap (agidi) they ate and it was so surprising that as tiny as they are, they sure eat alot.

Re: Baby Snails For Starters (fulica Achatina). by 2baga(m): 12:56pm On Apr 02, 2013
The cucumber were thinly sliced, so they can access as much as possible, they actually prefer fresh fruits. Pawpaw and mango, Plantain and Pinapple all join.

There is a particular micro-nutrient that makes the pawpaw and cucumber more enticing to the snails.
And you know, the more they eat,the faster they grow

they get bored eatin one thing every nw n then,so explore. Paw paw leaves, cocoyam leaves, cassava leaves, n a wide range of fresh leaves wil do once in a while. Also gabbage. Try carrots too. I think at every point in time in nigeria, there is always a fruit that is in d market, usually cheap. Just explore n besides, dnt let their feed be stored, get it fresh,a day at a time. If u do it like dis,i dnt think u would feel it if u are actually buyin it. Cheers bro.

you can actually buy any kind of fruit that you love to eat, wash, peel and eat the fruit. instead of disposing of the peeling and waste just convert it to feed the snails.
And as my oga @ d top (Afrocatalyst) said get a variety of fruits and leaves in season believe me they will eat. Even household food waste eg yam, potatoes, eba etc just ensure that is contains Zero level of salt (which is their mortal enemies) I guess you are good to go.

I forgot they are land snails, I watered my baby Fulica without making adequate provisions for the excess water to drain off.
Ehyah, I ended up losing some of my baby Fulica, especially the smaller ones.

I guess they drowned.

so sad.

I suppose we live and learn something new everyday.

Having settled down into a pattern of habits, its getting easier by the day taking care of my baby snails.

I get on the road by 5:30 or latest by 6am each day, I dont get back home till after 8pm most days, fortunately when I get home my snails are just about getting ready for feeding, they are not in a hurry, they will wait for me as after sunset is the best time for feeding snails.

So sorry guys,I'v been a little busy at work and then some work goes home with me.

Now lets see, the Fulicas are developing nicely, the bigger ones move about more, they get to eat more, so when I'm feeding them I try to even out the ratio,
I simply hand-pick the smaller ones and set them in a corner of the pen by themselves so that the agbayas (bigger ones)
dont gobble up the sweet juicy fresh fruits.

Most of the time, I noticed the snails only eat at their own pace, they might swarm the pieces of fresh fruits and leaves as soon as its placed in their pens only briefly and then they seem to lose interest. Once it gets dark enough they will return for proper consumption.

and always remember to feed them with a variety of different fruits and leaves, the fresher the better they love it.

Preparing some food items for the snails feeding, remember the fresher the better

The mango was so tasty and I had to employ the almighty formula to ensure equitable distribution.

I ate the succulent inner and left the inner seed and the outer flesh for the snails, they wont mind it one tiny bit

Re: Baby Snails For Starters (fulica Achatina). by 2baga(m): 6:23pm On Apr 10, 2013
It was well received as I shared earlier I had to re-arrange the smaller ones so they dont get out-muscled by their seniors.
The next day I ensured any left over piece is promptly removed to forestall extreme decay which may cause spread of disease.

At this stage, the supply of calcium is as important as their food, so never ignore this aspect as well.

No ma, I stay around ikorodu road for now, but we can always meet to share ideas and resources.

As much as possible try to re-create the snails natural habitat, it enables them to settle in better, giving you more yield and growth.

Visit a running snail farm to gain more knowledge and info on how to go about snail farming the right way.
