What Do You Consider The Major Hindrance In Nigeria's E-commerce ?

It is nearly over ten years since the world discovered the opportunity and convenience of e-commerce across countries and continents. People have virtually bought and sold anything from anywhere easier, cheaper and faster over the years.

Like any marketplace, the forces of demand and supply have had their toll on internet business. As such some countries or continents have found themselves with a bigger e-business response than others.

There are countless companies and individuals in Nigeria who daily do business online as either buying or selling. However, most business companies in Nigeria still find it difficult to attract adequate online business compared to their counterparts elsewhere. Or put it another way, many individuals and companies elsewhere still find it challenging to do online business with Nigerian companies.

In your opinion what do you consider as the major hindrance in Nigeria's E-commerce ?

Majorly it is lack of trust, I discovered pospective buyers are only happy when you tell them to pay at the point of delivery. They would like to meet you or your representative before making payment. This is what I have been doing and it has been helpful in my business.

How do we restore confidence? This is not e-commerce,
With cashless policy from CBN, e-commerce must be the focal point.

We are getting there gradually, the only way one can overcome this is to ensure your customers are satisfied especially the first caller. Once the first impression about you or your product is good, you are sure of making more sales directly or indirectly from such customer. For instance, I sold over 20pcs of my slimming pant at the firstbank headquarter at marina through just one customer. The woman also helped me by advertising the same product to her friends in Abuja. Sometime you only need just one sale and the word will spread beyond your immediate location.
Once again, tell your prospective customers what they would like to hear, such as, we deliver to your home/office and collect money at the point of delivery. Also tell the customer you will like to hear from him/her about the product.

Do you use your uba africard or any other debit card,
On Nigerian site ? If yes which Nigerian site have you use your card?
Payment on delivery is not E-commerce

I was thinking of something very related to this topics earlier today.

MY THOUGHT: I read a thread about the federal government plan of training graduates, and i said to myself, it's all bullshit! Nigeria can't be among the world power if the federal government still think they can actually provide jobs for everybody, sincerely it's not their duty, but they are obligated to provide an enabling environment for everybody.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE THREAD AND MY THOUGHT?
Ok, If the government would create an enabling environment, personally i would not waste my time and money on tertiary education (That can come later in life) Believe me, most Nigerian are studying because there is virtually nothing to do......... So if Nigeria have a good road network then E-commerce wouldn't be difficult because i know that my goods will be delivered within a very short period of time, so why would i waste my fuel and time in going to the store, when i can actually make a phone call/Place the order on the internet and have my item delivered that same day.... If the road network is ok, I can actually start my own intracountry freight/package delivery business, one of the reason why e-commerce gets difficult is the cost of shipping and insecurity of goods.

If there is light, i won't have to go to the cyber cafe before i can place my order, i would easily access the internet at the comfort of my room, at the security of my debit/credit card will not be an issue. Another Job opportunity for investor is setting up a local internet service provider, MTN or other communication network are not doing so well because internet wasn't part of their mission.

BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE: Most e-commerce company do everything by themselve, that's a bad business scheme, Let my company handle your customer service for you (creating jobs) since that is my expertise and you'll have enough time and resources to provide good products for your customers.

I can go on and on with what this country is doing wrong, but the summary of the issue here is that, The government should:
1. Fix light.
2. Fix Road.
3. Create favourable Policies

And this country would stand on her feet economically, because there are numerous graduates out there, that can actually fend for themselve through freelance jobs.

Re: The Major Hindrance In Nigeria's E-commerce ? by Krucifax(m): 3:37pm On Mar 04, 2013
The hindrance is twofold namely 1.lack of substantive online presence and 2. security concerns.

Per online presence,it is something that would take many years to achieve in Nigeria. As it's mainly new companies run by savvy young business men and women that truly appreciate the importance of e-commerce. In advanced economies like the U.K, businesses with established presence online are driving out traditional high street businesses and taking large market shares. Traditional high street businesses have had to respond by establishing serious online presence in order for them to compete in the market.

The process of having a proliferation of online businesses is a step by step one related to other infrastructural matters.These i list below;

Firstly there has to be increased power, secondly there has to be increased literacy and I.T know-how,thirdly also has to be a larger middle class that can afford to buy PCs/Laptops/Tablets etc, fourth there has to be govt investment in high speed broadband and support.

These factors i list above are the external one. Then there are the internal factors (i.e within the business).
You need a businesses large enough to require an online presence. If you are a road side Akara seller your annual turn around would not justify online investment. However if you have a larger budget and long term business plan an online presence is a must! You need managers and directors that appreciate the importance of this! The old guard (i,e my father's generation) as educated and learned as they are,are mainly not too tech savvy. So it is hard to get someone to invest in something he doesn't really understand, especially when that thing is something he has made do without in the past!

Summarily E-commerce is the future and the world is slowly embracing it,some quicker than others!

Dealdey, Wakanow, Jumia, Konga are all making big money servicing a small percentage of the population. The only way to go is up.

Ecommerce has already arrived, there are many challenges but cant really be called hindrances.

Commented on a similar thread in business section. Was recently duped online, and for now, will only buy from the recognized site. Frauds out there will make it difficult for those just coming up.

They will go to the manufacturers official website hack their official email and discover the user&password. God knows how they do that. They will change the password and wolla they will be the one transacting with the company customers . And a lot of people in alibaba do their payment through western union. now the money have to be transfer to china, no problem they already have men on ground there to pull the money for them and send back to them in 9Ja . So its beta for jumia konga to only accept pay on delivery. I think Customer Service is very important.Bought something from dealdey.com and spent 2 weeks trying to get them to deliver it.
By the time it came I was already pissed off.Maybe what hapened to me was an unfortunate coincidence.Perhaps they are usually very prompt in their delivery. But the opinion I have of them is that they are sloppy.

Yes I've seen this first hand, the sites are hacked by chinese, russian and Arab hackers, but these guys are not mentally smart enough to sweet talk you into parting away with your money, this is where a Nigerian yahoo boy becomes useful. There is a chat room on yahoo messager where they all met, and no matter how much money is involved they'll never double-cross these yahoo-boys, a plus 4 them, infact they worship these our boys 4 their smartness.
