Ok guys, please help a brother out. You have got a contract job with TOTAL ( elf petroleum ) worth 200,000 per month and a choice to travel abroad for a masters programme to be fully sponsored by popsy. Please which do prefer?

NB - Also take into consideration the fact that a contract job gives u that money only, no promotion, no benefits, chances of conversion to staff very slim, intimidation in the office dey too etc

Which do u opt for?

Pls I want you to think about it very well. But as for me, I would advice you go for your masters abroad, as this will further brighten your prospects in life and enables you to get fix up easily.

I think the masters degree will be better. there is really no future in this "conttract job" it is just a way of short changing people. if there was no other alternative it would have been good to take it. My brother abeg take d masters degree and further position yourself better and when u come back these people will chase after you.
well thats my opinion.

Definitely go for the masters degree. It's better to sacrifice the years now (can't be more than two depending on the country), trust me you'll reap the benefits later. It'll make you a professional with advanced knowledge in your field plus expose you to the innovations in the industry. I assume it's a masters in something like mechanical engineering or related, so you'll also be able to chose your direction of specialization based on what's in demand in Nigeria if you intend returning when you finish. This would enhance you value even further.

One point of advice though, I hope you've done your research properly into the masters thing. It makes a lot of difference if you're going for a M.Sc. as opposed to M.Eng.

Myboo, somehow you made the choice when you analised what the contract job thing entails. My advice is that you stick to the masters stuff.Thank God your Dad is financing you.People who do contract jobs are mostly those that dont have means. God has given you a capable Dad,just utilise the opportunity. This people will eventually beg you for a staff job.Good luck.

have you gotten the student visa ? and when is the course starting? if not soon, take the job , when your course starts you can go for it, by then you would have prepared the ground for your arrival back , you could still apply to total for a better position and you will be given concession for the initial experience with them .
hope this helps.

Take the job since it is a contract job ,it is also a learning experience ,infact what you learn from the field is more than what you learn on your Masters course

Work experience does not come as easy as that especially in Naija and in total for that matter .

If i were u i would take the job and defer my admission to the next session, the Job is not going to wait for you but the Masters Course has been going on for the past 70 years and probably will still be there for the next 100 years.

Infact the work experience you get will probably open more doors for you than a Masters cos employers dont want theory they want experience.

See a BSc graduate with work experience is more cometent than a Phd with theory.

At the end of the day is your choice

@poster

I STRONGLY ADVISE THAT YOU TAKE UP THE JOB. THERE IS CURRENTLY ECONOMIC CRISIS AND YOU KNOW WE HEAR MORE OF JOBLOSS. YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO MISS THAT OPPORTUNITY.

AS FOR THE MASTERS, LIKE WHAT ONE OF THE POSTERS ABOVE SAID, IT CAN ALWAYS WAIT.TELL DAD TO THROW THE CASH INTO AN INVESTMENT HOUSE WHERE MORE INTEREST CAN BE GENERATED.

MIGHT ALSO INTEREST YOU TO KNOW THAT THERE ARE VERY MANY MASTERS HOLDERS FROM SCHOOLS ABROAD WITHOUT JOBS BOTH HERE IN NAIJA AND ABROAD.

ANOTHER ADVANTAGE WORTHY OF NOTE IS THE FACT THAT FOREIGN COMPANIES ARE MORE INTERESTED IN THOSE WITH EXPERIENCE (AFTER MSC ABROAD).

CHOOSE WISELY BROTHER.

Myboo,

My advice is : Take the job at least for 3-4months then go for masters during Sept. this will help you get better job after your masters. Total will even love to have you back.

Meanwhile how did u get the contract job?

Bro,i blv im in d best position to advise u cos some 5 months ago i was in same shoes as u are now. As a rule of thumb take d job first den we decide on what to do next. These are some of d factors u shuld consider in takin ur decisions:1.God wills.2.How old u are?3.How influential ur people are4.Are u married, engaged or planing to soon.If u are 28/younger,well connected, without very solid relationship I will advise u to resign in Fall and go 4 d masters. But if any of these is out of place 4 u grab d job, stick to it and work ur ass up to a permanent position.U knw d ghost called EcoMeltdown:Its affrcting naijas studying in UK&Us more.Uk employers are reluctant to employ other whites let alone a negro from "grin corrupt nation called Nigeria".If u dised dis job now,u will just join over 500 nigerians PTDF hav sent on scholarship to Uk to scamper 4 jobs that may never come and wen u look back home dont b surprised if dis job is no more there.Pray hard and think twice b/4 ur leep. All d best

Solomon227 has spoken very very wisely

i like the way he analysed it,

i would suggest u take the job with both hands ( whats the duration of the contract)

DOING A MASTERS in the UK does not guarantee you a job in the Uk or in Nigeria cos all and sundry have a Masters now from the UK so the competitive advantage is ur professional work expereince

Master degree programmes are always available, infact for some courses u can do dem online ( if u hv nt got an admission yet)

sometimes, i really wish i stayed back to hustle instead of doing me masters which i hope pays back somewhere down the line
Re: Contract Job With Total (200k) Vs Masters In The Uk: Which Do U Prefer? by wolexf(m): 5:45pm On Apr 02, 2009
I think you should go for masters since ur popsy is willing to pay for it because if u miss this opportunity it might never come again, once u start working if u want to do masters u will have to pay for it urself, i am also considering going for masters in the UK and i know the cost will be btw 4.5 - 5millon naira so if ur dad is ready to pay, i see no reason why u should say no, besides with the whole credit crunch thing i think getting additional qualification could be a plus and when u finish next yr the world economy would have started picking up,

Make no mistake think about how many months u have to do that contract job of urs before u can afford to pay for the masters urself.

Be smart and let ur popsy splash the cash on u.

What if you are not retained after the whole contract stuff? Brov, go for your masters and come back to the country to rule. B.t.w, how many 200k do you think you would need to get to 4.5m if u re to sponsor yourself to do d masters in uk. Unless u wan go unilag to spend 150k.
Re: Contract Job With Total (200k) Vs Masters In The Uk: Which Do U Prefer? by eyeshadow(f): 9:16pm On Apr 04, 2009
I'm actually surprised that a company that big would pay as little as 200k per month for a contract job. I would take the opportunity and go and better myself with a masters degree.

Go and ask many of the people with masters in naija working in banks whether it is that easy to 'rule'.

Since your dad is paying for the Master's degree, I'd advise you to work for at least a year before going abroad. Nothing can replace experience and on-the-job learning. Master's degrees are good things, but with so many people getting them these days, you need to distinguish yourself with experience else you will simply be another one of the crowd.

Take the contract job!!!!
If you are young and very hard-working, your company will renew your contract.
Your dad is the one paying for your masters(the opportunity shall remain).
