Should Pastors And Gospel Ministers Participate In Politics? by Eklektika(m): 3:08pm On Mar 12, 2013
In an increasingly grey society,Ministers of d Gospel are getting involved in Politics. This did not used 2 be so because during d 1st Century,d Clergy was distinct, different n appositive 2 d ruling Govt. Over d centuries,d merging of d Church n State has been steadily gradual but almost inevitable. While some argue dat dis is counter-productive 2 d Church as d Church cannot condemn or harangue d ruling class, others argue dat d merging of d 2 would ensure d facilitation of freedom of worship. They even enjoin Christians 2 enter Politics in order 2 right societal wrongs. And a 3rd group even argue dat Church should not even commend, condemn or participate in politics as d Christian has a soon-returning King n His Kingdom. So what's ur take?

Good afternoon Ekle,

I believe firmly in the freedom of choice. If a preacher decides to delve into politics as a citizen who has the right to vote and be voted for then I have no ish with it. However, it is my opinion that the call to be a 'preacher' should be a full time job and going into politics would mean the preacher is kinda confused about his calling. I don't think that it is convenient to be a preacher and a 'politician' at the same time.

Now, if the preacher contests and wins an election would he be comfortable with promulgating policies that are in line with the principles of equity and justice? For instance, if it is ideal to separate the church and state, would he find this okay? Or when it comes to gay rights, what would be his approach? I know it would be easy for Christians to accept a pastor for a president but if the table turns and an Imam is made president instead, would we be comfortable with the promulgation of policies which are based on the principles of the Quran?

I believe that when one has a calling to lead the people of God as a preacher, the individual should be concerned with spiritual matters while politics should be left for the politicians.

Thank you!

@ Strictlymi,u r on point. Being a Politician wd definitely increase d chances of d religious leader 2 compromise his stance n calling. In d mine-field dat is politics, concessions in d 4m of politically correct decisions wd hv 2 b taken by him in order 2 strengthen his position, eventhough such decisions might contravene d tenets of his beliefs. On d other hand 2,haranguing d political class wd sooner dan later attract harsh treatment 2 d Pastor or Religious leader in d 4m of gagging, threats, arrests, torture or even death.
