A group of iPhone developers will be releasing a new software tool today that will enable users to fully customize and control their iPhones. A Youtube video details what is possible with the tool.

The tool known as "Pwnage Tool" is currently a Mac OS X application that allows users to modify their iPhone's bootloader to allow it to boot any software. In its native state, the iPhone bootloader is what prevents it from booting unauthorized (non Apple) firmware.

Once patched with this tool, the "pwned" iPhone will accept any software to boot, including modified iPhone firmware or alternative operating systems such as Linux. The demo video shows how a custom 1.1.4 firmware that already includes Jailbreaking and Unlocking can be easily loaded onto an iPhone. They also believe the modifications will support future firmware, such as iPhone 2.0, which is due for release in late June.

Early adopters should proceed with caution, of course. While the most common use will likely continue to be unlocking/jailbreaking, the tool opens up many possibilities:

Full independence from Apple’s vision on what the iPhone (and iPod Touch) can and cannot do.
,
You will eventually be able to backup your entire phone and restore to a state exactly the way you like it, restore straight to jailbroken state with installer, or even potentially install other OSes like linux (see iphonelinux.org) to your phone.

since the early days we've had BSD on the iPhone anyway, but i guess the BL was never pwned @ the lowest level b4.

BSD subsystem, no. just unix tools. full BSD, yes, the OS X kernel is based on MachBSD. but now, thanks to iuphone devteam, we can finally own that expensive piece of fickle phone. have already got my pwnage tool for mac, used it and its dead easy without the *issues* of ziphone, iliberty etc.

go george hotz!
Re: Linux On Iphone? by logica(m): 6:32pm On Apr 07, 2008
how does geohotz get credit for pwnage?
Re: Linux On Iphone? by Neoteny(m): 6:54pm On Apr 07, 2008
because his toolchain gave every single one of them the means to patch firmware. was he not the one who discovered how secpack works? from IPSF, anysim, iunlock, iplus, iliberty, ziphone all the way to pwnage, his work laid the foindation.
Re: Linux On Iphone? by logica(m): 7:07pm On Apr 07, 2008
no, it was collaborative work, but he does deserve kudos; not many 18 year olds know what he knows.
Re: Linux On Iphone? by Neoteny(m): 7:45pm On Apr 07, 2008
i thought DVD Jon will be there first since he was first to activate away from AT nT even though he couldnt make it call.

iphone dev team and the splinter elite team (before they remerged) really owe a lot to geohot. and we owe more to them all.
Re: Linux On Iphone? by logica(m): 7:54pm On Apr 07, 2008
they owe a lot 2 him, and he owes a LOT more to them,

i was on the #iphone IRC channel when he came in 2 beg for the secpack, the dev team had extracted it way back, and by giving it 2 him, he was able 2 collaborate with some others 2 unlock the 1.1.2.

DVD Jon has since moved on to other endeavors,

So we can expect Windows emulated on the iPhone. Instead of worrying about crappy office ports, you could install a streamlined version of Windows 2000, install office 2000 and work on the go

at least in theory. . . grin
I expect to see some Office apps on the Phone sooner or later, sha.
Re: Linux On Iphone? by Neoteny(m): 10:05am On Apr 08, 2008
proper office apps are the first port of call for the devs of official apps, then its on to enterprise apps etc.

im really excited about the appstore.  imagine, third party browsers, windows slideshow, IM clients (not apollo!) and proper widgets with dashboard.

@logica

you can have all the secpacks in the world (which only was significant in 4.6) but you can't do pretty much without a toolchain, can you? except if you want to go into hardware unlocking messing with scratchers and 18volts   grin.

read: " BootNeuter is brought to you by MuscleNerd, gray, chris, wizdaz, and the entire iPhone Dev Team. Thanks to geohot for the extended secpack erase method."

http://wikee.iphwn.org/sgold_bootrom:bootneuter

however this is all besides the point who-got-where first. they all did a superb job and we are grateful. meanwhile i still can't see my pdfs in pdfviewer. safari works, but i don't see any sense in having a pdfviewr app and then having to fire a browser to view my dox.

help?  cry

is anyone using iphone pc suite by ispazio? its one of the best pc aps for the iphone. you can back up the entire phone, backup individual apps, upload/download songs videos and tones to/from iphone witout itunes, and even preview themes on a mock simulator. its great.
Re: Linux On Iphone? by logica(m): 7:52pm On Apr 08, 2008
Neo;

let me know these:

Firmware version.
PdfViewer version.

Did you refresh sources before installing?

You may need to first uninstall PdfViewer, then refresh sources, update installer (if it's not version 3.01), and then reinstall PdfViewer. I propose that you have a much older version.

Mine is version 0.03
Re: Linux On Iphone? by logica(m): 6:47pm On Apr 09, 2008
ispazio pc suite eh? well, i do my app customizations and back-ups the old fashioned way: ssh/winscp/wifi/, but i'll check the suite out.
