2015: UPN Applies For Registration With INEC by Adurangba(f): 7:29am On Apr 08, 2013
In preparation for the 2015 general election, revived Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) has officially applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for registration as a new party.

UPN, the party on which platform Chief Obafemi Awolowo contested the presidential election in the Second Republic, is being promoted by Dr Fredrick Fasehun and many other Awoists, especially young Turks, within and outside the country,
The party’s application was submitted at the department of party registration at INEC headquarters in Abuja on Thursday by the chairman of the party’s Contact and Mobilisation Committee, Honourable Bari Adedeji Salawu.

Although the application was accepted and filed by INEC, the electoral body did not receive the N1million registration fee brought by the UPN officials.

Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune on why the money was rejected, Honourable Salawu explained that the circular that jacked up the registration fee from N100,000 to N1million had not been signed by the appropriate authorities.
Salawu quoted INEC Director of Party Registration, Mrs Regina Omo-Agege, as having said that the fee would be accepted as soon as the circular is signed, adding that the party would be registered by INEC and it would take part in the next round of elections.

He noted that the scenario that played out recently with different parties laying claim to the acronym APC would not happen to UPN because the party, through its lawyers, had earlier notified INEC of its intention to register as UPN.
He assured the people of the South-West and the entire country that UPN would re-enact the achievements recorded by Chief Awolowo as Premier of the defunct Western Region, achievements that still dot the region’s landscape till today.

UPN is the future of the SW.
My Yoruba people must choose between Awo or Tinubu.

Your analogy is not right. Awo is not alive. So no one is choosing between Awo and any other person.

The correct analogy should compare the people that will flag the UPN flag to the people flying the ACN flag. Anyone can use Awo's name to fly the flag of any party. ACN has used it. AD used it. Even PDP has used it.

The question is: who are the people that will fly the UPN flag? Faseun? Babatope? Jakande? Falae? Awolowo-Dosunmu? Adebanjo? Where are the remaining core Awoists? They're either dead or too old. Put differently, who are those intellectuals and morally upright people (with the financial muscle) that will promote UPN?

I think the UPN factor is exaggerated. It won't do better than the current AD or Ladoja's Accord. People have moved on. There was (or is?) even a party that used the UPN logo (Egbe Imole) in the last general elections. It had candidates in Lagos ostensibly to use Jakande's name. All the candidates failed.

The bulk of voters is under 40. Talk to them. What do they KNOW about Awolowo or MKO Abiola? But they know, see and feel the people they've voted for in the SW. I don't think the likes of Faseun flying the flag of UPN can upstage that.

By the way, as at the time the military struck in 1983, UPN was not in full control of the SW. Today, when the UPN giants of Bola Ige, Abraham Adesanya, Bisi Onabanjo, Dawodu and Awolowo himself are no more, you can imagine the outcome.

If this party can stand true to the philosophy of Awolowo then iam a fan. Let the spirit of Awo arise.

No wonder Liar Muhammed is making every effort
to smear Dr Fasehun.

Why is ACN jittery? Why will they take to lying about
Dr Fasehun securing a multi-billion naira contract?

There is more deceit in so-called APC than the PDP. Buying over
newspaper houses to carry false propaganda is not the end game.
No matter how the press collaborate with opposition to lie to us,
one day, the truth shall surely prevail.

Lest I forget, between Tinubu and Dr Fasehun,
I would prefer to be a follower of Dr Fasehun any day.
Only crooks queue behind Tinubu.

No party can stand on its own. Human beings would have to drive it. Who are those human beings? What's the motive or intention of those people? This is what we should focus on.

Any party can change its name several times and it will still remain the same. AG metamorphosed into UPN with largely the same people.

A name does not make a party, people do. A name does not make a country, citizens do.

To some extent, you're right. Which famous, 'grassroot building' politician in Nigeria today is not a 'crook'? This is true especially if his/her influence is felt in more than one state. This may be sad but is it a lie?

You see, it has become expensive to form groups and mobilize support for parties in Nigeria. It's very expensive and this is what taints them over time. In order to get the needed funding, they negotiate with money bags or money sources and have agreements.

Today, Faseun does not have the money. He can't even fully rely on OPC because the group is not as united as it was in the early 90s.

Let Faseun go through the gruelling process of mobilizing people for his group and come back to compare him to Tinubu, Anenih or Jonathan.

Forget it if you think people would automatically line up behind him.

Tinubu was a darling of the pro-democracy groups in the heady days of Abacha. They were all in the trenches together. In fact, it's said that he was the number one financier of NADECO.

By the way, Dr Fred Faseun was a presidential aspirant in 1992 or so.

I suspect Obasanjo is part of this UPN move. If so, both PDP and ACN/APCN are toast in 2015. The whole of the South West, most of Edo/Delta, most of the North Central, some of the North West and due to the Obasanjo factor, some of the South South will follow this party.

ACN will scatter immediately, with the real Awoists pulling out from under Thief-nubu's dictatorship. He'll be left with just a few loyalists. If Obasanjo joins, most likely, Ibikunle Amosun will decamp into this party. Gbenga Daniel will be re-united with Obasanjo, because of Mama HID Awolowo and the REAL Afenifere - Ayo Adebanjo, Falae and co.

In Lagos, vast numbers of PDP members will leave, and I suspect even Bode George will decamp because he never got a Presidential Pardon, although I don't know if a party in which Obasanjo is playing a key role will accept him easily. A lot of ACN members will also jump ship from Tinubu's party, and he will most certainly not be welcome in that party because of his altercation with Mama.

Tinubu and Jonathan, both allies, are finished.

Nonsensical reasoning! Need I remind anyone that Gani with all His touted fight for the common man went the extra length to form a political party and how many Nigerians voted for NCP? Did NCP win any local government chairmanship position? How many councilor seat did they win?

Wake up from your slumper as 2015 is Nigerians against the PDP and Nigerians shall win and GEJ will be sent to Otouke in preparation for His 7years jail term.

Nothing will happen - it will die like AD.

SWesterners dont follow names but the people in the in the party.

We were not just following UPN. We followed the party because of the people in their and their programmes.

Is behind UPN? Jonathan... Died on arrival.

UPN will not be registered. UPGA registration was denied because it carries semblance with an old sectional party.
