Why I Am Disillusioned With The religion section by Nobody: 7:15am On Apr 09, 2013
Many have noticed that I hardly come online to the religion section. The simple reason is that my moving back to Nigeria and some other things that I have realised turned me away bitterly from the religion section.

"In the end, it is not good or evil that wins but power"
- (the significance of this quote will become clearer soon)

1) Jesoul and Maclatunji
The first step away from the religion section started with Maclatunji and then on to Jesoul. Even before I left to Nigeria, I stopped frequenting the religion section. The reason for this was some deep philosophical reasoning based upon the actions of these two people. Starting with Maclatunji, his extremist tactics here on the islam section became a serious turn off. What made it even worse was the support that he had from muslims. This support gave him power and tied Seuns hands. If the muslims enjoyed Maclatunji, why should Seun change anything if they are happy and frequenting the site? Maclatunji bans any comment against islam from a non-muslim be it true or false. He bans people for over 20 years, something that no mod or Seun does. I started wondering to myself that if muslims were a minority with no power in numbers would Maclatunji have such power himself? What is the use of talking about islam just to get banned? after being banned 15 times by maclatunji, I started to rethink my commenting.

As for Jesoul, most people here like her, including me but there is a character flaw in her that leads me to realise that I am wasting my time here. Jesoul is a smart christian that refined her religious thinking after meeting atheists. She generally does a good job moderating but she has a bias that many people overlook because of her nature. Jesoul is very quick to stamp out atheist insults and threads she finds "abusive" very quickly but a bit relaxed on christian threads. Furthermore, we had a tussle that made me realise that some people are not nice to atheists out of being nice but they see it as a favour/great sacrifice that they are doing for the atheists.I wanted an atheist thread to be stickied to give some visibility to atheism here but Jesoul was ready to fight against my atheist thread that I wanted to be stickied to the religion page even though it did not concern her. I addressed my thread towards MMC and clearly only towards MMC. Even MMC had to caution her that she shouldnt have entered an argument with me but rather discuss it with him in the private mod threads. What even pained me more was that the christians were rooting for Jesoul's abuse power while many atheists were silent on the case. Jesoul plays a political game where she is nicer to the "weak" atheists here (great if you wan to marginalize the outspoken ones) and clearly, it was the more vocal atheists that supported me. At the end of the day, MMC didnt even grace me with a conclusion or reply on the case of my sticky thread. I had to ask myself that if the Mods are going to do their best to keep atheist threads down what is the point? I have had about 300 threads if not more on atheism here but most of them buried in the dustbin of nairaland history, few minds changed but nothing permanent.

2) The reluctance of Seun and other atheists
https://www.nairaland.com/1206362/advice-atheists-thread/1

In the above thread, I wanted to meet atheists in Nigeria so that we can muster something up towards promoting humanism and humanistic messages in Nigeria. I put forward some plans and asked other atheists to review and give their own plans. I was met with honest criticism (which is good) but also sheer straw men and fear from my fellow atheists. There was a some good criticism of my plans for me to be careful and not too aggressive with a disbelief in god in nigeria, which I liked. Unfortunately, I was met with foolish claims that I was evangelizing atheism and that I was somehow going to promote heavy anti-religious messages. I clearly was promoting humanism and not atheism. Humanism is far from being anti-religious. Worse than that, only few even gave serious solutions. Most were happy to criticise without any solutions. The few that gave were mostly silly- "more education, education, education". Even an illiterate knows that education is needed in Nigeria but the question is how we are to achieve that. The idea that I liked was that of Plaetton, who said that he wanted to open a bookstore/club to talk about science/art and issues facing Nigeria.

Seun, who was on that thread, was quite silent on using his site to promote an atheist/secular comic that he put on a thread once. If Seun is not ready to promote anything secular but allow Adeboye and his cohorts to rule the front page, I have nothing other than to respect his rights to run his private website the way he wants and go somehwere else where I can meet my expectations/plans. Seun has tried in giving us this platform where I became logicboy to many Nigerians. I cant ask more of him.

What I find is that many foriegn atheists are more active than Nigerian ones who are overwhelmed by Nigeria's problems and prefer to live their quiet skeptic lives in the small piece of peaceful privacy they have.

3) Me, myself and my job (power, missions and conventions)
So, I have a job now and meeting people, I realise that people are moved by good deeds and less by internet comments. I have also realised that only power changes things. I want to be successful at running my own business and make a lot of money. So much money that I can make a difference in Nigeria and influence minds.

It would be better for people to follow my example. I want to be like Tai Solarin, Soyinka and Leo Igwe. I want my work to speak for me. Brave and selfless. So I need to focus on making money.

So, I have decided to go and meet people who are vocal atheists/selfless humanists and discuss with them . Anyone who chooses to be a weak atheist in Nigeria is free to exercise his right to be bullied and live a cowardly existence. Weak atheists are for developed countries where there is freedom of & from religion not Nigeria where too many religious people feel that it is their right to discriminate against disbelievers and when there ubeliever complains, the religious people feel that they are being persecuted.

===============================

I hope I have explained my sentiments well. If not feel free to criticise and ask questions

You made sense and i sympathize, maybe a little, with you. But as an atheist you are not supposed to be frequent on religious forums since you dont give a damn about religions. Perhaps, they cited you were creating trouble.

Mr Man, now that you have finally found a job, I advice you concentrate on your job and not take these yeye people seriously.

Nairaland is not a public forum but a private business. The day atheism will make more money for Seun, that day Maclatunji and Jesoul are gone.

But there is something I thought you understood before which I am doubting that you actually do. Internet commentries have done more to kill religions and enlighten people than 1000 years of good work. Even I became fully atheist after joining NL and reading the comments on this section.
Think about it. Do you believe Jesoul and Mclatunji's shenanigans and stifling freedom of speech are pushing people to god or away from their gods?

Believe me, internet is making a lot of difference and those two only showcase to doubters what religious power could lead people to do.

So where are you based now? Nigeria or UK?

Dear logicboy,
We don't live in a perfect world, much as what you have said is true from your own point of view you have to keep asking yourself one fundamental question and that is in whose interest? Good , evil , oppression to a huge extent is all subjective. Not everyone would share in the passion you have for atheism, not everyone wants to go out there join together form a big happy body of people to take on religions.
What you have done in your own little way sparks the fire of wanting to know more in anyone willing to question what they believe in. Now that you have come back to Nigeria please be smart about how you "preach" atheism, like you said let your life and principles speak for themselves.

Me personally I couldn't be less bothered I could stroll in read laugh and move on, but we are all different.
