Sometimes as young Adults, especially returning 4rm schl or wherever 2 see ur parents. Most if not all, prefer hugging their mum, including me.

But when it comes to fathers' is it preferable to 'shake hands' or 'hug'? Well I see shaking hands as a sign that u've been accepted or acknowledged as an adult; as a man by ones father and therefore deserve a handshake 4rm him as he(father) shakes his peers.

But a fatherly hug shows u're his son......yes, which u're. But also goes deeper to show u're still a kid(my opinion) who has not come of age yet. Dis is b/c as a kid, one usually hugs ones dad and doesnt seen ok to me to still hug him as an adult especially 'young adults'. It still presents one as still a kid especially when this is done in public.
Nairalanders, whats ur say?

I don't think it is childish to hug one's dad but some parents might not be ok with that type of greeting.
My dad for instance, I would like to hug the old man though, but I'm scared because the guy is so icy and austere a lot of the time and he might not even respond at all.
One of these days I would definitely give him that hug, maybe the day I move out of the house. Then he would be too choked up on emotions at seeing me leave and he would be forced to hug me back grin

it depends on the tradition, for example, in Yorubaland, every father appreciate prostration as a genuine respect from their sons to them, it makes then feel happy and great, and to me, what's the big deal there.
Till now, i still knee totally down with my two knees for my mum, especially when she start raining blessings on me, i remain glued down until she's done.

@op, regardless the tradition and custom, never try to handshake your dad first, it's unafrican!
May God help us all.
