Recently the Telecommunication firms in Nigeria threatened a show down with NSE if they don't drop the idea that they need to be listed on the floor of the exchange.

Our Telecos are all privately owned (except starcoms) and they are refusing to go public. Are they scared of hitting public or what?? Nigeria is a major retail hub with over 160million people to make money from. Besides, Nigeria Telecos make over #90Billion monthly (and I hope to be a partaker of that)

Investment gurus, if you have any idea/s why it is so, pls kindly share wink

** I can't wait to buy mtn and Glo shares**

perhaps because they will have to be opened about their ownership structure [the nigerian ones], corporate management etc

and some Nigerian companies are not used to being scrutinized just yet

some just don't feel they can raise kind of funds they need on the NSE [many don't meet the minimum criteria to list in developed markets]

Starcomms was listed on the NSE as part of the exit strategy of the American investors. The investors made a kill while the shareholders (those that bought their IPO) suffered a loss of about 90% of their investments. The rest is history......

CDMA telecom companies such as Starcomms could not survive the cut-throat competition of their GSM counterpart. The figures from NCC showing a downward trend of CDMA subscribers attests to this fact.

Adenuga may not want GLO to be listed on the NSE for obvious reasons.

MTN is well funded by their parent company.

ETISALAT is also well funded. Ask Hakeem Bello-Osagie

AIRTEL (former Econet, V-mobile, Celtel, & other names it had) should have been listed long ago on the NSE since it was plagued by lack of sufficient funding by the initial core investors (owners), mismanagement and boardroom squabbles. I really don't know if they have resolved these issues.

VISAFONE could be listed on the NSE but may also suffer the same fate as Starcomms listing on the NSE.

ZOOM MOBILE (do they still exist?), MULTILINKS and others barely exist in the face of stiff competition by GSM telecom providers.

They are simply making too much profit and unwilling to share.

Companies in the developed world don't go public to "share" their profits.. They go public for two reasons:
1. To raise capital for the business.
2. To make the founders and early investors stinkingly rich - at least on paper.

So the answer still remains. This time, no need for paper money when they're busy making the real cash

To me, the reasons are numerous:

1. Our politicians would want a lion share for themselves thereby acquiring majority of the shares for themselves...I can assure u that if a company like MTN, GLO or Airtel comes out for an IPO you would not see more than 1,000 units to buy because the powers that be would have taken majority stake.

2. Majority of the performing telecom companies are foriegn based, and i noticed that most foriegn companies nowadays donot trust the overall management capabilities of Nigerians.

3. Fraud: this is a major problem becos currently there is fraud in telecom companies(there is fraud in most companies) but by the time majority of the shares are acquired by nigerians, there will be massive fraud and
the business will be turned to a family affair thereby hindering the growth of the company...

This is the small one i can come out with...for now i dont blame them but lets see first.

This is what they are afriad of, the thought in ur mind of sharing...BTW they want to share but do you think when majority of the shares are being owned by the politicians you will get anything...

so that Nigerians would not see how they have been reaping innocent Nigerians of their hard earn money. The Telecoms are rogues.
