An Upper Sharia Court in Tudun Wada, Kaduna, has sentenced a lesbian couple, Hajiya Ai’sha and Malama Hauwa to a six-month imprisonment for living contrary to the teachings of the Sharia.

The lesbians had told the court that they had been married for five years.

The Hausa service of the Voice Of America monitored in Kaduna on Wednsday reported that Sharia Judge, Mustapha Umar ordered that apart from the 20 lashes given to each of the lesbians at the court premises, they should also spend the next six months in prison with no option of fine for violating the tenets of Islam.

Ai’sha, one of the convicted lesbians, said shortly after the judgment that she had paid N5,000 as dowry to the 23-year-old Hauwa five years ago, and both of them had since been living as husband and wife.

According to her, trouble started recently when she noticed that her wife, Hauwa was flirting with others who she feared may eventually snatch her.

She therefore asked Hauwa to refund the N5,000 dowry since she was no longer a faithful wife but she refused and the matter was reported to the police.

Ai’sha added that although they had lived together in Tafa near Abuja, in Kaduna and other places in the past five years as a couple, she had enjoyed relationships with several male friends and often enjoyed having sex with Hauwa through intensive romance, which made them to reach orgasm.

She, however, denied membership of any group or association of lesbians, saying although there could be many others who practised same sex love, she had no knowledge of the existence of any near her.

She said what happened to her was a lesson and prayed that God would forgive her for what she had done.

Hauwa on her part said her ‘husband’ (A’isha) was not telling the truth because she was not trying to ‘marry’ another woman but was only tired of living as a lesbian.

She said what happened was a lesson that could make them change for good and prayed to live a righteous life in due course.
