America Vs The World: Why? by SeanT21(f): 6:38pm On Apr 12, 2008
How is it like to view ameriac from outside the borders? How does america foreign policy affect the world? What have america done to the wworld to be the most ahted nation on earth? The only country that love America is probably france.

Here is a story I read on CNN.com:
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) -- Australia's prime minister came under fire at home Friday over a playful salute he gave President Bush at a NATO summit, which critics said seemed to suggest Australian subservience to Washington.

Australian PM Kevin Rudd, left, and President Bush at the White House on March 28, 2008.

Australian television repeatedly broadcast videos of the gesture Thursday on the sidelines of the Bucharest summit and speculated about what it meant, while opposition lawmakers said it belittled Australia.

"We are not the 51st state of the United States of America and Mr. Rudd's salute carried a subservient connotation many Australians won't like," said Bob Brown, leader of the minor opposition Greens party.

The salute revived memories of Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, accusing Australia under former Prime Minister John Howard of being too close to Bush and too willing to adopt hawkish US. foreign policy.

Rudd explained that he was just being friendly toward a world leader whom he had met for the first time as prime minister a week earlier in Washington.

"It was just a joke," Rudd told Australian reporters in Bucharest. "I was just saying 'hi' to the president of the United States -- I was just with him the other day."

After saluting, Rudd strode through other NATO leaders to shake Bush's hand and spoke to the US. president while smiling.

Rudd replaced Howard as prime minister in elections last November. Rudd, a Chinese-speaking former diplomat to Beijing, has promised to follow an independent foreign policy and to withdraw 550 Australian combat troops from Iraq this year.

The big brother America always help other countries in crisis.
Ex-Liberia-American sent troops to help get Charles Taylor out.
Ex-Rwanda-America help stop the genocide.

America don't want any trouble with no. America didn't even agree to get in WW 1 and 2 till the enemies bomb the US.
America is the first Non- evil superpower but why do other countries hate us.
Is it because we are rich in minerals. Is it because we are advance in technologies?

For those people that live in other countries. Why do your countries hate America? What reason do they give?
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by SeanT21(f): 6:49pm On Apr 12, 2008
Forgive my lack of correct spelling. My nails are too long so it makes it hard to type and i forgot to put spell check on.

any way here is most of my peers complaint and reason. We had this discussion in class the other day.

Here was my question?

You have to admit it, America is not popular around the world. Its South American neighbours hate America, most of Europe hates America, the middle east hate America as well as the Africans, east Asians and Australasians, not to mention Osama Bin Laden and his clique. The only ones left is Antarctica with its penguins, and Tony Blair and the whole of the UK hate him! Should America come over with a big basket of muffins and make nice?

Cos they have words for everything & answers for nothing. Wankerrrs.

Perhaps they get upset because we invade their countries, kill their men, torture their children and rape their women? The nerve

I totally agree like all the illegal immigrants who came to America in which they get free medicare and free aid yet they protest against America. They shouldn't belong in America., I know we have our problems but over all we are a great country

If the other countries hate us so much, I think we need to cut off all our foreign aid and let them take care of their own people. America is the greatest country, and I am proud to be here. Let them eat **** if they don't like us.

think most of us are overzealous stuck-up warmongers. Maybe we're too patriotic, at the cost of considering citizens of other countries as our equals. I know that the image that the media portrays of America is not entirely accurate, but I think we need to consider how we act before we question why the world hates us.

my brother answer this question when i ask him.
Big sister, first of all, no offense but America is a CONTINENT, you mean United States of America. Second, I don't think the US is hated by everybody, if it was, then people wouldn't be looking to enter the country in order to have an opportunity to work. So, don't feel like that, Some hate, but not everyone. And Osama just has some problems with himself. smiley

A British guy said this,
Do not generalise. Why do so many of us BRITS holiday in the USA. It is not because of George Bush, or for that matter Mickey Mouse, it is because in the main all the ordinary Americans people are generally really nice guys!

Those were some respone i had when i ask the question in my world studies class.

What is your though on it?
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by drrionelli(m): 12:13pm On Apr 13, 2008
As somebody who lives in the US, perhaps I might offer this:

Indeed, people often feel that a country's foreign policies reflect the entirety of its population.  Such is, however, not the case.  Many US citizens (by the way, with all due respect to your brother, "America" is part of the official name of our country, so feel free to call it "America."  It's quite correct to do so!) don't agree with our political stand with respect to other countries.  For that matter, many US citizens disagree with our domestic political policies.

But, Americans are, for the most part good people.  To be sure, there are those who are not.  Every country has such people.  And, America is a large country, in terms of geography and in terms of population, as well.  Because of that, we have great economic influence.   Many other countries think that, because of this, we tend to "bully" our way to get the things we want.  I admit that this does, sometimes, appear to be the case, but is not necessarily so.

America is also a land of great monetary wealth and cultural diversity.  Some envy this from a standpoint of that which is available and the ability for so many different people to get along so well.  Now, yes, there's plenty of room for improvement, so, yes, we continue to strive.

And, America is a "young" country.  We've only been in existence for a little over two centuries.  So, we're still growing up, so to speak.  And, let's be honest, we all make mistakes.  It's just that when a country like America is in the wrong, people everywhere notice because what this country does affects so many people in the world.  Our country does not necessarily agree with everybody else, but we do endeavor to be respectful of all.

On a personal level, I note that while many here on nairaland.com might have issues with the US on the level of international politics, many of those same persons have warmly embraced me on a personal level here, on this site, a gesture for which I shall always be appreciative.  This says that people are willing to look beyond the metonymous manifestations of what they feel a country represents and come to know and respect those who are part of those countries.  It must be so, for we are, indeed, far more similar than we are different.   And that, my friend, is how we, colliectively, will continue to make this planet a better place to live.

My apologies for such a lengthy posting, but I have, do, and shall feel quite passionately about our abililites to get along with one another and share this world.  Some do, indeed, view the situation as your title suggests, i.e., America Vs The World.  Really, America isn't against the world.  Rather, we know that we're a part of the world, but no more so or less so than anybody else.

Thank you, SeanT21, for bringing this up. Such encouragement of discussion can only help to bring out issues and potentially lead to the solving of problems.
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by almondjoy(f): 7:44pm On Apr 13, 2008
Things will work out for the better I hope.  The foreign policy sucks as far as American is concerned.  The world just has to deal with it the best way it can. . .till things improve. A love-hate relationship with the world I must admit.
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by 4Play(m): 7:55pm On Apr 13, 2008
Which foreign policy are you talking of?Is it the same one under which the US has tripled the aid budget for Africa and helped bring about debt cancellation? Is it the same one that allows African countries to export many products into America duty free?

Maybe you prefer foreign policy under which Africa is laden with debt.
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by Cadet(f): 8:46pm On Apr 13, 2008
4Play, one minute you're for America, the next, you're against it. Or do you prefer to be called "neutral".

No problem. I am glad i brought it up myself. I enjoy your explanation that we are not against the world but also for the world. America is the big brother that everybody needs but nobody wants.

Americans are good people period!!!America is a land of opportunity. Why do you thing everybody wants to come here.

For the people that live outside America. How do ya ll feel about us?

we all know that america's foreign policy sucks, on the otherhand , we must also realise that other countries are jealous of America, it is whaty it is
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by SeanT21(f): 9:34pm On Apr 18, 2008
yep they are jealous.
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by drrionelli(m): 8:25pm On Apr 20, 2008
Why do you think that such would be the case, SeanT21 and TCUBE?

Also, SeanT21, what leads you to suggest that the "world is against us?" That's a rather strong statement. How do you support it?

LiquidMind, what aspects of the American government do you find "diabolic?" Why do you feel that America is "against the world?"

Tonim, you seem to be a bit confused. Is there something that you would like to have made more understandable?
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by SeanT21(f): 4:43pm On Apr 21, 2008

We don't hate America. We hate the policies of GW Bush and despise Americans for voting him in twice!

Once Obama becomes president and he is able to change those policies, we will respect America again.
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by drrionelli(m): 7:29pm On Apr 21, 2008
Well, as far as 9/11 goes, that, in and of itself, doesn't suggest that the world is against the US. If anything, remember that countries around the world offered assistance, sympathies, condolences and other manifestations of support following that nightmarish tragedy.

Like the common saying goes, " When you are atop the world, little details are magnified, so are deficiencies"
America is on top of the world, they have the whole world watching, and the world has changed drastically, rather than look at people for the good they are worth, the media seems to focus on only the evil. same is the case with Nigeria
On the issue of Foriegn policy, the one prevalent problem is the fact that the United States doesnt not recognize fully the soveriegnty of most Nations in the world. But other than that i believe the Foreign policy of the states is great - protecting the weak, deterring wars, strengthening economy.
The australian case is just overblown.

@ Seun, you want to despise someone, make it just Bush. It is pathetic to blame a whole Nation that was clearly mislead and still grieving. How come you dont like Americans for wanting Bush gone, Lowest rating amongst past and present American presidents. and one more think Obama is a joke!

Seun:

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Americans elected GW Bush twice. angry
I am not supporting the pro-Bush, but c'mon seun, learn the reason he was elected first. Obviously, it's not basically about the Iraqi war( since that's the reasons most of you peeps are hating on him). wIKI or GOOGLE the 2000 and 2004 US election before "shaming" a whole country. If he won, then there must have been some obligations he proposed to achieve (which by the way, he did not.). Abeg, no vex me o, seun!
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by Kobojunkie: 12:23am On Apr 22, 2008
I bet if I ask Seun what the so called Foreign policies were/are, he would return with IRAQ war as the policy.
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by RichyBlacK(m): 4:36am On Apr 22, 2008
If a world wide competition is organized inviting proposals for "dumbest foreign policy imaginable" from all and sundry, no proposal will even come close to the level of dumbness of current US policy no matter how hard the writers try grin - the gold medal will surely go to Washington.
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by dayokanu(m): 7:16am On Apr 22, 2008
Which foreign policy are we screaming about? The foreign policy that makes it the largest donor in the world. Go and ask victims of tsunamis in South East Asia or Earthquake in Pakistan or Famine in Africa then ask me Are this disasters US made or as a result of the so called US policies?.

China's foreign policy in SUdan or Russia's local policy on Chechnya .
US spent a lot of resources to put order in the world even where they are not concerned e.g The Balkan to oust Milosevic and save Ethnic Moslem Albanians No one talks about this. US unseats a Saddam Hussein who was a terror to people within and outside his borders Ask Kurds, Iran and Kuwait. US invade Afghanistan that houses Osama. Would US have gone to Afghanistan if Osama did not strike?

We can all sit in the comfort of the US and enjoy its free press and lease of life while we continue to bash her. Go to Beijing, Tehran, Baghdad,Havana or Moscow if the US policies are bad.
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by Seun(m): 9:02am On Apr 22, 2008
We can all sit in the comfort of the US and enjoy its free press and lease of life while we continue to bash her.
Your myopia is one of the reasons the world despises Americans. You think everything revolves around your country. The people that despise Americans do not live in the USA. They live in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, South America, Africa, Australia, and Canada. They most definitely do not enjoy this imaginary "lease of life" you're talking about. Many of them - like the Iraqis - are enjoying a lease of death and blood.

enjoy its free press
The GW Bush government doesn't believe in free press. "If you are not for us and our war, you are against us."
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by Kobojunkie: 9:17am On Apr 22, 2008
Yet the press continued to hammer the idea of going to war from day one?? Stop making things up. Free press has never been abused just that the people themselves decide what they are willing to condone and during that time people felt it was their place to boo those who were not for the war. How does that translate to there being no free press

Nah War ooo,  I still am waiting for people to post the specific foreign policies they hate. Again, I repeat, do not post the iraq war as your number one. Look, it is one thing to be against the war. That does not mean you are automatically in the right and all those who are not on your side of the stage are evil people just cause, even if you say it over and over again. put your emotions and feelings aside and address this as objectively as you can and focus on giving actual points.
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by Seun(m): 9:27am On Apr 22, 2008
I bet if I ask Seun what the so called Foreign policies were/are, he would return with IRAQ war as the policy.
The waste of the lives of US soldiers and millions of Arabs for the sake of oil price. The impending war against Iran. The regular practice of raping of female US soldiers and Arab girls. The torture of prisoners who may or may not be innocent. The wasting of trillions of dollars to fight a useless war thus damaging the value of the dollar that the entire world economy relies upon, while enriching government contractors and their affiliates in power. The massive violation of human rights (both Arabs and Americans) both domestically elsewhere in the war against oil price. The lies that have led to millions of deaths.

So, it's not just foreign policy. GW Bush has turned the US into a country we can no longer emulate.
If you catch Obasanjo or Atiku doing something bad, well, GW Bush has done something worse.
It's as if a married man you've held as a mentor all your life was found dead on top of a prostitute.

put your emotions and feelings aside and address this as objectively as you can and focus on giving actual points.
This thread is about why people hate America. "Hate" is an emotion. "Despising Americans for voting a war president twice" is a feeling. This thread is all about feelings. The world's feelings about the current USA. wink
Re: America Vs The World: Why? by Kobojunkie: 9:31am On Apr 22, 2008
Now, I give you the last post there and on that note, I choose to quit posting on this thread as I sincerely HATE debating "feelings".
