AN OPEN LETTER TO OUR M.D.-GODWIN EMEFIELE ON UNFAIR LABOUR PRACTICES IN ZENITH BANK

Dear Sir,

While it is unfortunate that we have to use this very public means to reach you, we were however left with no other option as this affords us protection from possible sanctions from our superiors had we communicated our grievances through official channels

.

Our issue is with the way and manner the recent promotion exercise in the bank was carried out and the policy adopted by Human Resources with regards to promotion (especially for operators).

The majority of people in this “unfortunate” group are officers in the Executive Trainee (ET) and Executive Assistant (EA) cadre. We believe that a situation where a junior staff has to spend 4 years on a level because he scored a B+ on his appraisal while his colleague spends just 2 years on that same level and gets promoted based on an appraisal rating of A is rather unfair, unjust and deeply demoralising more so, when the said appraisal is subjective and based on who you know

.

Some of us were defrauded out of this promotion exercise by Human Resources in connivance with our line supervisors and branch heads by having our appraisal grades reduced from A to B+ and in some cases, from B+ to B in Nov/Dec last year.

We hear stories of how promotion was done every 6 months before we came into the bank and we understand that the prevailing economic situation has necessitated a shift in promotion policy in order to reflect market realities. But we know that the recently released FY 2012 results have served to confirm Zenith Bank’s position as an industry leader and ask that this be reflected in the lives and welfare of its staff.

Some of us have served for upwards of 2, 3 and 4 years and the only thing we have to show for it are the immaculate suits and shoes we wear to work…nothing else.

When you went on a tour of some of our branches last year, our interactions with, and perception of you were that of a leader who was open, accessible, honest, and had the best interests of staff at heart. We believe you will look into our complaints with a view to correcting this injustice.

We look forward to your swift and immediate response sir.

This is the kind of post that should be making the front page as it will affect lives and not Tontolet flying at night picture.

I don't think your MD will read this. If you really want to communicate your grieviances to him, create a yahoo mail I'd and send your complaints to his official mail. All the best.
