The brother’s girlfriend slowed things down, as she was not experienced and didn’t have the best kayak out there. After staying the night in one area, they faced a part of the water that had high winds and 4 foot water swells. After spending a lot of time and energy fighting the force into the sea, they made their way back to the island and started looking for her brother.

By using his iPhone, Andrew was able to call the Coast Guard and find out where the brother and his girlfriend were at. He did this by using a GPS app he had downloaded just before the trip began. Ultimately this was what saved their lives, as the Coast Guard was able to easily rescue them and the brother with his girlfriend.
