cos i have some very important and personal docs in it that i would not want anyone accessing.

The program is called truecrypt, it's online and is free, it encrypts your drives, in, different modes, i would suggest the file container where you make a file of and size you want and lock it up. The down side is the program will have to bed installed on any laptop you want to use it on, have fun

@poster, it is possible. If your computer is running Windows 7, all you need to do is to open "Computer" and locate your external hard drive you want to password. Right click on that your USB external hard drive and and choose "Turn ON BitLocker". Follow the messages that your computer would be displaying to complete setting password on your external hard disk. Note: the process might take few minutes to hours. Just watch your computer as it encrypt the files you have saved in the hard drive. The system will notify you as soon as the process is completed. Good luck to you!

thanks but won't i need to instal the bitlocker program first? cos when i right clicked on the flash on my windows 7 computer, i did not see the "bitlocker".

You said it initially that it's your external hard drive. If you bought the hard drive new and it's branded like Seagate or IBM external drive, you do not need to install any special software, the BitLocker option should come up as soon as you right click on the external hard drive.

Bitlocker is only available on Windows 7/vista Ultimate/Enterprise editions and Windows Server 2008. I also recommend Truecrypt, a good way to protect your data is encryption. I also prevent unauthorized access to some files by compressing the files with password using Winrar.
