Gospel Music Hangout: Enthusiasts And Musicians by nuwell(m): 3:50pm On May 28, 2013
Hello everyone,
Welcome to the Gospel Music Hangout.
It's a place where I believe everyone who is enthusiastic about or even merely interested in Gospel Music (especially but not limited to Contemporary Gospel) can meet and interact, share tips, recommend listening material and so on.
I look forward to our interaction.
Cheers

I need to make a clarification though.
Gospel and Secular are not Genres of music but rather Classifications. Gospel music is defined by the theme and message it presents.

* Singers and Performers, who's your musical influence - all-time or at present?
*Fans and Enthusiasts, who are you current listening to?
* Critics...you know what to do.

Some Random Thoughts

I remember when Sammie Okposo to my mind, was the best and only thing on the Nigerian gospel music scene. He's still good but now the market is bigger and more open...or I guess, I just got a lil' bored or disenchanted with him after the 'No more drama' album...

My man, Samsong never seemed to explode as much but he's always been lurking, in his own way, in the shadows...

*I marvel at how Tope Alabi's sound seems to have defined yoruba gospel and even secular brands in her genre...

*I haven't seen a CD of The Experience concept since I attended the first edition in 2007.. .

Hmm...

More Random Thoughts

*My man, J Moss seems to be reorienting his music. The 'J Moss Project' and 'V2' are still my favourite albums. Maybe 'cos I haven't listened as extensively to 'V4' and others...

*For your choir pieces, you can't beat Pastor Hezekiah or Donald Lawrence...

*I wouldn't dare neglect to mention Mr. Kirk Franklin - Le Maestro Extraordinaire. The MOG spews gospel hits like a plague and he ain't retiring anytime soon...

Reporter: So how long have you been singing/doing music?
Artiste: Oh, I started when I was a youngster, in the church choir...

I have heard this phrase too often for comfort. What's the trend with people discovering and honing their talents in the church, then leaving the very environment that made them, to run their own thing often in a very unrelated field of endeavour, indulging practices that contradict and often oppose the church's stand and then turning back to share(?) the glory or is it to mock that very institution?

Re: Gospel Music Hangout: Enthusiasts And Musicians by nuwell(m): 11:22am On Jul 09, 2013
ministerclem: should christian listen to circular music?

Hello, I'm sure you meant 'secular' music? I'd like to give you a simple 'Yes' or 'No' but as with many human decisions, I'll rather present the facts and let you reach your own conclusions. Please bear with me as this might get a lil' lengthy.
Alright, here's my take.

Music is a medium of expression. I made the clarification earlier, that gospel and secular are not genres but classifications under which the different types of music can be categorized. However, what dictates the message, motivation, objective and effects of the music, is the basis of the classification.

The question 'Should christian listen to secular music?' is akin to 'should I eat EVERYTHING?' Someone would hurriedly say yes, but when you note that our tastes and appetites don't always tally with our digestive systems, then you understand that while you CAN eat ANYTHING you want, you really SHOULD not eat EVERYTHING. Some meals will constipate you, others will give you allergies and still some may cause you diarrhea. So we need to choose carefully. Here's a quote from the great Apostle Paul 'All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.' (1Co 10:23; KJV)

Music is such a pervasive medium of communication that we can imbibe it without conscious effort. Ever thought you were not listening to a song only to find out several days later, that you remember the lyrics and can hum or even sing it? LOL. It happens to me all the time. So when consciously possible, one needs to ACTIVELY guard what one allows into your subconscious. I'm fond of telling people that the mind is like a Compact Discs (CDs). For best results, one needs to take care of them and as much as possible, keep their readable surfaces from getting scratched. Once they are scratched, you can expect any form of misbehaviour from it or its total failure. The mind is better and more easily protected from debilitating influences than it can be restored when it is contaminated...or scratched.

As Christians, we present our minds to God, who works to change the way you think, so we can then know how to do everything that is good and pleasing to Him. (Rom. 12:2; CEV). This process needs all the help it can get. A lifetime isn't usually enough to get the job done, but a lot can be achieved if we fully cooperate with God. Hence, whether or not to listen to secular music (consequently allowing us to influence us whether we like it or not), depends on how quickly we want our transformation process to progress. We don't want to take one step forward and take two back. Such progress can be slow and frustrating.

All in all, realize that whatever sort of music we expose ourselves to will make or mar us. The purpose of gospel music I believe, is eventually to glorify God, not necessarily because every line is rhymed with God or Jesus or Holy Spirit, but because such music redirects our attention to God and helps us appreciate and love Him more for the testimonies of His actions in the lives of the musicians. That's what makes it GOSPEL.

I'd better stop now. I guess that's plenty to think on already. We can continue this discussion if you so desire.
Thanks

D-3D is an artist who just like Kirk Franklin opened the door of gospel music to the world and america fought him for it. On the Nigerian scene, frank Edward has become almost the most successful and sold out Gospel artist in Nigerian music industry. D-3D whose style of music is quit controversial yet holds a deeper meaning to those who Care to listen to the lyrical contents, is an artist whose entrance will tear the veil of just Cos u do a gospel music, does not mean u still cannot groove like the circular artists do. The only fear of D-3D(which is I), is that even my pple will turn dia backs on me, simply because they think am one of them. But I plead with yall, LISTEN CAREFULLY B4 U JUDGE ME. D-3D, coming soon.

Soundtracks are available as karaoke videos on youtube. Just use the Youtube search and type for instance 'hezekiah walker grateful instrumental' and you could even be directed to sites where you could get help, or you could download it from there. I can't at present remember any of the sites right now. But I could check much later.

There are many PC Beat making software options including Fruity Loops (which I use), Reason etc. They have their individual strengths and flaws as usual. So you use one based on personal preference.

Stay blessed.

How can you forgive me when I've often gone astray
How can you think of me when I do things my way
Turning my back from you
The one who loved me first
Having my own desires
Renewing worldly thirst

You told me you loved me and I should make up my mind
You tell me come back now, but I keep wasting time
Feeling so very weak you say I can be strong
I feel I've gone too far
You tell me to come home
You love me still
And I know this is real

And I am running back to you
I see your standing there for me
Your arms are opened wide
And I don't have to cry no more
You're standing there for me
And I am running back to you,
Why do I go away when I know I am no good when I'm on my own

You told me you could keep me, but I've turned it away
I failed you so much now I don't know what to say
Using the same excuse that I am just a man
You tell me you've been there
And hold your nail scarred hands so I can see
Now I know I am free

I have taken advantage of your love and grace
Forgive me Lord and take me home, take me home.
I'm running to you Jesus please take me home,
You see I've been in this run way too long and I can't do right anymore.
I'm tired of pain and I don't like fear
but Lord I want to be more sincere.
I never should have left your side.
Return me to your guiding light
I'm running back to you I see your standing there for me.

Running back to you
Fred Hammond
