demmy55: Well, I haven't been able to save anything so far and I have about 4months left to pass out. The 19,800 ain't even enough to cater for my expenses, let alone saving part of it.

I hate it when I see some people (corpers) being stingy on themselves all in the name of 'saving'. You always hear them say 'I don't have money, I don't have money' meanwhile they have thousands of Naira breathing in their bank account. They always opt out when some compulsory contribution (e.g. CDS, Church donation, tithe etc) comes up. You never see such people buy drinks or snacks (Coke, Viju, Malt, Biscuit, Chocolate etc) for themselves let alone buy for another person. They always expect someone else to buy for them while they are busy saving their allowee.

I keep asking myself, is it not the same 19,800 they pay all of us

In conclusion, everyone have different plans and knows what works for him/her.
As for moi, my Bible has taught me to be generous and not to worry about anything and that has been working for moi grin

reminds me of some guys in my hall. stingy ibo guys, chai!!

ujchief: N19,800 x 11 = N217,800.
That's what I saved. Except the first allowee that was paid at camp, I didn't go to bank once to touch that NYSC account. Well, it was easy for me b'cos I had somewhere I was doing a secondary assignment cheesycheesy so it will be wrong to measure other corpers savings with mine.

As for my plans for the cash, I've already paid N50k for NISP safety professional course (levels 2 and 3) starting on monday thru friday at ph. After this, I will still find other professional courses to enroll with the cash, and maybe pick my Msc form with it.

Trying to empower myself with the cash so when I remember my service year, I wouldn't say it was a waste.
I must say ur case is kinda special, not everybody can find him/herself in ur shoes.I know dat ur so called secondary assignment is not a minor job

sigba: First of all, Congratulations on our successfull pass out!!!
On to the matter; I was gisting with a friend of mine (a nairalander cool) on the parade ground yesterday, we talked about our savings from our alawe, i was amazed when he told me he has not touched his 9 months alawe, imagine 19800*9shocked. I was like what have i been doing all the while with my alawe cos i cant boast of any savings Lol.

After my chat with him, i went about asking my friends how much they saved, some said they saved 10k every month, some said they give 200 naira everyday to Akawo, some said NYSC money is drug money so they have no savings.

I have a friend who served last year, after his service, he used his savings to buy a bag of rice, tubers of yam and some other food stuffs for his uncle who sponsored his education, then he got a bb, changed his wardrobe etc etc. I wondered if he'll have some change left for him.

Well, i dont regrette what i used my alawe to do because they are tangible investments(conssoling myself grin).

So i throw the question to you guys, including those that passed out since and those still serving. How much did/have you save/d and what are your plans/did you do with the money?. kiss

I saved noting, in fact NYSC is still owing me for 4 months. The wicked pple cheated me and made me suffer for nothing. But its gone now but still miss the wonderful experience.

Dis thread reminds me of a dude we served togeda.d guy saved thru his nose! Drank "hard water" frm one old borehole instead of buying pure water, cooked wiv fire wood, refused to pay wen we corpers agreed to host d new batch for a few days b4 settling down.d list is endless.y do u av to mak life difficult in order to save? Nysc cash is basically for upkeep so dat u don't die while serving

In my own case, i really had fun during my service year and managed to drop 5k every month into a policy like that. left with about 80k with other monies that came my way. my candid advice, save if you can but don't do it to the detriment of your well-being(if you understand what i mean) unlike some guys in my hall then. stingy fellows #laughs#.

Nice thread. But y is everybody buying bb with the savings?
Why leave cash domant when u can invest and get x2 of it by the end of the yr?

As for me, saving is far frm me,i spend 200# to my ppa everyday, registered for some professional course that will make me pay throughout the service year. The rest i give to God,who i knw will never let me down.

too much talk abt savin; its all abt saving for the ryt reasons. Being stingy to ursef aint d way to go abt it coz small economies of scale dnt necessarily make u rich bt rather make ur lyf miserable n poo-lyk.
Currently servin in calabar wer lyf z freakin xpensiv bt i du hoard 5k/month dou.
As fr prospectiv corps members, all u nid z a ppa dt pays btw 5-15k plus once-in-while cash frm home, so dt u can kip sth reasonable n lead a reasonable lyf durin service,,,,,its a 9ce xperience

I saved all my allawee then i.e all the 19800. But i think saving of NYSC money depend on the environment you lived, your spending habit and your PPA. In my own case i had a free accommodation and apart from my federal allawi i used to collect state alawi which was nothing compared to my weekly 4k site allowance and 10k at the end of the month from the government contractor.

Now let me write from my experience + give some smart guys a sure business idea. Its very possible to save something reasonable BUT u need DISCIPLINE & I don't mean being stingy to ur self, infact feed well & flex appropriately. People that stand better chance of saving are girls & corpers posted to a state where they're based or have relatives. I didn't fall to any of the category no matter how hard I tried. If u're serving from ur parents house, I see no reason for u to touch ur fg allowee unless for special needs. So u don't need this points. But for us that were thrown to strange lands with no help in sight & a poor PPA.
#1. Use the first month in that state to estimate what ur needs & expenses will amount to.
#2. U MUST cook. Its better, hygienic,to ur taste.
#3. Get a separate bank account with no ATM card where u can save a particular amount especially for those that are easily tempted.
#3 please if possible don't get an ATM card for ur allowee account.
#5 For the guys no dey pursue woman oooooooo. If u must have a chick she must be a corper like u its more convenient, a reasonable one at that cos what I saw while serving I no fit shout, heartless chicks(corpers o) were living on foolish boys.
BRB, later......
N.B PLEASE saving during NYSC isn't a do or die affair o!!!!! Feed well, take good care of urself cos ur loved ones are expecting u to come back alive, look good too. Have it at the back of ur mind that the 20k is a peanut, God will surely open the doors for greater things. I hate seeing corpers living like paupers while serving. To be continued.....

I really thank God 4 my service yr. I saved my 11months out of 12months Alawee. I had 2 pay in 2k into my account after 6mths 2 make up d #200 VAT, cos i needed a round figure and d 1500 bike pay on d POP day. At d end of it, i still hv #221,300.00 in my a/c. I came bk home wt 58,000 cash accrued frm PSA, skul, church and LG council sentforths cos there is no bank around dia. I'm stil being owed 22,000 frm my PSA (Private Secondary Assignment). Am still thinking of what 2do wit d money though i ll soon go for a safety professional course.

first, i will like to thank God for his love by making me serve in Abia state. I still have 4 months to end my service year. With an average income of 40 k a month (19k allowance, 8.5k ppa, 7k spa with atleast 5k computer biz n printing), i have been able to buy:
a samsung smart phone,
a 30k home theater,
a 10k acoustic box guitar,
paid off a 10k debt,
house rent,
more than 20k on family matters (siblings n friends),
at least 10k as monthly upkeep,
a 10k flat screen monitor,
a 14k UPS,
a 3.5k stablizer,
a 15k fairly used printer. Aside many misselaneous spending that seems unavoidable. Hopefully, before month end i should get a laptop and subsequently a 5 or 6 string Bass guitar. I just don't believe in saving(atleast for now) just invest what ever penny i make and tomorrow will take care of it self. Serving has been interesting so far even though have not been doing anything in d ministry.

whr u serve and d organization u served with determine ur savings..aside FG alawee,if ur state or ur employers is payin enough to feed u for a month then it worthwhile to save bt if not den u av to eat and take care of ur self and health bfr tinking about savings.. u mait nt be able to save much,bt u can try to dvelop n invest urself..like myself i was able to write NIM ,learn tailorin n hw to knit bag,got a new lappy den gada little moni dt i used to start my campala business afta nysc.....and i dnt starve my self to death in achieving all dis

if u ar posted to the interior/villages/rural areas u should be able to save enough because u will av free food( from the community and caring neighbours, most times from their farms),free house-helps and free accomodation and u can easily get permission from ur employer to travel.the village ppl sef go dey respect and treat u like a VIP.even sef,for those dat like chics,u will get free PUNANNIES at no cost......But most of u make the mistakes of going to d extent of bribing in order to get posted to cities where u pay expensively for accomodation, high cost of transportation,no regards from residents, chics sef go dey form for u.

Honestly, I wasn't able to same a dime.

No regrets though. Paid my tithes, gave alms, fed my friends and colleagues on a daily basis lol.

My house became an informal meeting point for chow, cos I love cooking, anyways ... Not try na make excuses, but what's there to save?
