[b]I’m Proud; So What? I’m An Artiste — Eedris•Says He’s Working On A Project With 50 Cent

Eedris Abdul-kareemThe history of hip-hop in Nigeria is incomplete without the contributions of Eedris Abdul-kareem. “I’m an elder statesman in the hip-hop music,” Eedris spoke with Weekend Ride recently on his sojourn to Ghana after his initial problem with a multinational three years ago on what was referred to then as a show of shame between him and the American Rap artiste, 50 Cent.


“I had problem with President Olusegun Obasanjo on my record, Nigeria jaga jaga but today, jaga jaga man don carry jaga jaga go. The king is back now because I have so many things to talk about. This prompted the release of my new 17-tracker album. What you are not, you can’t take. I gave birth to hip- hop music – whether anybody likes it or not. I went to fight for them and I’m back to take my position,” he declared


Going down memory lane on the actual cause of his problem with 50 Cent, he said, “His boys came to me inside the plane to ask me to vacate the seat I was occupying because the seat was meant for 50 Cent. I refused to vacate the seat. That was how the problem started. I was humiliated. Other artistes in the plane were watching them beating me. “And I said, ‘Guys, you are here looking at me, it could happen to anybody in the music industry in future.’


“Today, artistes are now enjoying the fruit of my struggle for the industry. The music industry needs to be regulated.” He continued: “Many people believe that I’m a strong-headed person, and I agree. I have pride, because I’m an artiste. Every artiste must have pride. The struggle is worth it. They are respecting us abroad now.” Eedris confirmed that he he suffered throughout the period he was abandoned by the corporate bodies , not having big concerts to attend; but he said it was worth it.


“I only suffered for two years. I’m from the North. They should never disrespect Nigerian artistes. I’m an icon of peace. Today, I don reconcile with 50 Cent and we are back together with a bang. Just watch out for my new project with him. “My new album, The King Is Back, is a revelation on many things that affect our social life and the entity called Nigeria. “You remember that Obasanjo once abused me and said, ‘Eedris, your mother, father and family na jaga jaga. Today, I have been vindicated. I love Yar’Adua and I’m ready to work to make him succeed.


“Once in the lifetime of a people, a sterling and unique opportunity presents itself begging to be tapped and appropriated. If such a people are imbued with deep insight and sense of discernment, they usually grab such an opportunity with both hands and coast home, fulfilled and enabled. “If on the other hand, they fail to realise and appreciate what has come their way and overlook, reject such an opportunity, their subsequent enterprises become polluted by that regrettable loss,” he concluded. I will not say he is nobody i have to respect the new school pioneers and he is one of them but is Eedris really the king? To me he is no where near the front lines when it comes to rap or hip hop either ways eedris is far from been king.

It is customary in music to claim titles. Ruggedman claims he is the pillar of Nigerian hip-hop then, Eedris Abdulkareem declairing himself as the King should not be seen as arogance. To me he is truly the King and he is back for good.

Personally, I think idris is a great rapper. But it's not easy for me to fight the whole world,

I heard from a friend that Eedris was at AIT on Saturday, May 10, 2008.  The guy told me something about him (Eedris) going to show in Dubai or something like that. I did not watch the interview if anybody watched it, I would like to know how true this is (not that I don't trust my friend, but just curious to know more details).
