* Allege marginalisation of the South

THE House of Representatives, Wednesday, faulted the entry requirementinto unity schools in favour of pupils from the north to the detriment of their counterparts from the southern part of Nigeria as announced by the Federal Ministry of Education.

In a motion moved under matters of urgent national importance, the legislators acknowledged that the policy runs contraryto the provisions of Section 42 (1) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, which states that no citizen of Nigeria shall be discriminated against on the basis of his community, ethnic group, place of origin, gender, religion or political opinion throughany law in force in Nigeria or any executive or administrative action of government.

In the plenary presided by the speaker, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, he declined to approve a request from sponsor of the motion, Mr Afam Victor Ogene calling for the suspension of the recently released discriminatory cut-off mark for unity schools.

Under the controversial policy recently announced by the Education Minister, Professor Ruqayyatu Rufai, an instance of the cut off mark for a male pupil from Abia is put 130, same for a female, as against 35 for a male and 35 for female from Bauchi state. Both male and female pupils from Kogi States are expected to both score 119 as against 9 and 13 for their counterparts from Sokoto state.

However, the lawmakers mandated the House Committee on Education to parley with officials of both the Federal Ministry ofEducation and the National Examinations Council, in order to review the policy in such a way that would guarantee fairness and accord the Nigerian educational system more credibility and general acceptance.
Members of the Aminu Sulaiman led-committee were directed to report their findings back to the House by Tuesday, July 2, 2013

Don't wory the problem started when our northern ruling elites refused to educate the northern youths so that they can use them as boko haram but now ministry of education is trying to balance the gap.
Re: Reps Fault Cut-off Marks Of Unity Schools. by Standing5(m): 2:20pm On Jun 27, 2013
We simply cannot live with the assumption that some states will play catch up forever, there has to be a gradual closing of the gap. The federal character principle needs to be terminated gradually. Let these so called disadvantaged states start thinking of how to catch up or else they will continue to rip off Nigeria with it.

The sins of our leaders in the North will never go unpunished.
Even with all these policies to catch up with the South,
these same leaders will use back channels to sell the
idea to their people that "boko is haram" just so they
can contniue to use them to commit dastardly acts just
in the name of holding on to power.

Quota system, a recipe for disaster!

Yet we have leaders who have seen this for several decades but have done nothing..

Instead they have set phantom targets like vision 20-20-20, yet they still leave this killer policy to thrive..

Just like a man trying hard to fetch water from the stream with a basket..

May God save us from this disaster!

There is nothing absolutely wrong with the cut of mark so the house of reps will at the end of the day be chasing shadows. The purpose and system of admission into the unity schools has already been laid out so why the fuse about the cut off mark. We should rather focus on using a different criteria to select students into the unity schools since the present criteria is not allowing us to see the reason why they were established in the first place.

Note: In my opinion the present arrangement of admittance is faulty but the disparate cut off points is on the right foundation.

Do you balance the gap by creating academic misfits? Do you balance the gap by putting square pegs in round holes? This approach is as lame as sponsoring someone who could not pass his O' level maths and English to go and study medicine and surgery at Harvard because someone has to fill the quota of his state. An intelligent approach towards balancing the gap should be aimed at providing sound basic education at the primary school level to enable them compete favourably with their brothers across the Niger, and not by removing the huddles for them. What this implies is that the teachers would be forced to reduce their standards to carry them along. Imagine you teaching a JSS1 pupil to write ABCD. I pity the teachers who would handle these dimwits in class.

I think it's hightime we got rid of our ostrich mindset towards some burning issues pertaining to national development if we really want to move Nigeria forward. Everyone of us knows that quota system is exactly what shot our OGA AT THE TOP to where he is today such that he doesn't even know what a website is. There are many people like him heading critical sectors of the economy and running the nation aground. Many slowpokes foisted on us all in the name of federal character and quota system. No wonder they have been the strongest voice in support of rotational presidency. They are so afraid of competition on the basis of merit.

Bontee: It is better people read up about the unity schools of a thing before they start abusing the people of northern Nigeria. Its not like every kids from the south is smart or by default more intelligent than any kid from the north.

We are saying that whatever is written there must be reviewed.
There is no justification in asking one student to score 139 and ask another one to score 2 in the same exam.

We are neither saying that every kid in the south is smart or default more intelligent than any kid from the north! Rather, it is the policy that is saying so! The policy makers by this policy are claiming that the Southern kids are more brainy than their Northern counterparts and hence the need to set different standards. Very High standard (for the South) and no standard at all (for the North).

Who is afraid of leveling the standard? By the way, are you saying the policy setting up the unity schools distastes academic excellence?
