I had a brush with Python when I started programming. But left it after a little while for Java, cos I believed it to be more powerful.
Python knowledge is currently limited to basic syntax, functions and basic file i/o operations.
Java knowledge is up to intermediate level. I've built basic desktop applications.
However, I have zero experience with Web applications or any form of Web development, asides maybe, HTML.
I stay very close to Otta. Can I apply as an intern, without pay, of course?

I'd dare say tht a programmer who is versed in sql is an anomally.
Sql is redundant brain numbing work and programmers are (or shud b) an impatient bunch if they hav 2 wrk on uninteresting stuff.
Y not hire (or consider ) splitting ur dev team into specialties: database manipulation= database administrators/experts.
Programmers:
hard core = (as low as wanna get)
these are the monks who dream in code and need the a temple for an office (not a cubicle. With near-complete noise control. Really good for thinking). Institute noise control policies and separate programmers from other beings . These guys are essentially the products.
Light core devs:
the javascript, web designers html five and those who can code but dont want to operate past welter weight category. They'll use api by the hard core guys also some people break down in concentration if the have to think for a long time for an extended period everyday!!
The github/google code idea is a security check but wat off devs who've got wrks sitting on their hard drives? A zipped archive of theyre works should do. An interview drill can detect falsehood and off course real life experience will prove them beyond a doubt.
Then what about a programmers reading list? Will ur company provide a library for its programmers.
U can tell alot about the direction a programmer is heading by perusing his reading (or wish) list.


Finally the location issue! Its really an isssue as d programmer has to relocate to the company town. But i think its wise for a start up to hav its core staff working together in house.

That shouldn't be the case for a site as big as Nairaland. It's like saying Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram execs should be dishing out their official email addresses and you see 'Bleep.xxxx@gmail.com'. It's time for Nairaland as a brand to grow up.

Have you ever watched a tv promo or programme that you know a lot of money was used in producing, only for you to hear 'send us an email at abcdefg@yahoo.com'? Sorry to say but it smacks of unprofessionalism. Why spend so much building your website and/or brand, only to give me a generic free third-party email address?
For a small fee, you can still use third-party email providers like Google Apps or Yahoo Small Business for your email hosting needs as you will be able to use your own @domain.com name, but please people, don't tell me its irrelevant. Anybody can go to these free third-party providers, register your name and use it illegally.

To satisfy the dude Google does allow forwarding (and management) of domain directed emails to Gmail though. And I hear it's pretty much simple and free!

I've configured the forwarding already & used it before, but I have lost important mails because of it, so I prefer to use the gmail account directly. For me, reliability is far more important than vanity. I might change it just to get these offtopic comments to stop but I don't feel like pandering to the people complaining right now. Maybe later.
