As Chelsea's pursuit of a star striker continues, Romelu Lukaku remains in the shadows waiting for his chance, and on the basis of his Premier League showings last season, he is ready.

In the Roman Abramovich era, 12 strikers have been bought but only one – Didier Drogba – could do real damage. The fact that he did it regularly against major rivals made him a success.

As for the likes of Mateja Kezman, Hernan Crespo, Adrian Mutu and Andriy Shevchenko, it just wasn’t meant to be.

Now Chelsea have Edinson Cavani on their radar. The Napoli marksman finished as the Serie A’s top scorer last season with 29 goals in 34 appearances for the Italian outfit.

The man they call 'El Matador' has netted 104 times in total for the club, averaging a goal per game.

The Blues strongly believe the Uruguayan can have the kind of impact Robin van Persie had at Manchester United last season, and going by his statistics, there is reason to believe he can be a big hit.

But this was exactly the same reasoning when Fernando Torres was signed, and we all know of his scoring record of late.

Like Torres, whom at £50m was way too expensive, Cavani at £63m is even more expensive and despite his statistics, there is no guarantee he will be a success in the Premier League.

The best bet for Chelsea would be to graduate Romelu Lukaku to the first team.

Having seen the young Belgium forward excel at West Brom on loan last season, finishing as the sixth top scorer with 17 strikes, Lukaku deserves a chance in Chelsea’s starting XI.

Dubbed as the ‘new Drogba’, Lukaku possesses great ability, including strength, a turn of pace and of course clinical finishing.

With a good number of games under his belt, and steady development, he could turn out to be the real deal and be even greater than Drogba himself.

Lukaku’s fine showings last season proved that he can play top flight English football and is surely the most prudent option for Chelsea now they appear to have missed out on Cavani.

Without a doubt he is currently the best striker they have on their books. From all indications, if a striker is to be successful at the west London club, he may just require a little bit of Drogba in him - and Lukaku has that in abundance.
