Dear CO,
My brother wife won the DV 2014.They both married 2012 December befor the DV result come outthis may.
But people are telling us that they will turn them down because she play it single.
Should she come alone then file for him,so they don't miss this opportunity?Or just tell the CO at interview that they married two months after they play the DV?That is the honest truth but with what happen to my mom DV,i dont want same happen to my brother and wife.
Lastly how long will it take if my mother(Green card holder) file for my sister who is 18 years ?

Uh oh. You need to go back to the Embassy or Consulate and get a new envelope. It's sealed so that the CBP agent at the border knows it hasn't been tampered with...

That $165 fee is a new USCIS thing and has to be paid before they'll print a green card.

Good morning! She can pay the fees at the Embassy or Consulate at the time of the interview. If she is married, she should certainly bring her husband. Assuming that the marriage is bona fide, she'll have nothing to worry about.

Good morning! As long as they got married after she submitted the original entry, there's no problem. Honesty is always the best policy.

If your LPR mother files for your minor sibling, the case should be current right away according to the Visa Bulletin (see http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/bulletin/bulletin_1360.html ). So as soon as all the paperwork was complete, the case could be scheduled for an interview! smiley

VisaOfficer: Greetings! I am a U.S. Foreign Service Officer working in a Consular section in western Africa. I primarily handle Immigrant Visas and Diversity Visas. I've noticed a significant amount of discussion about visas on this website (yes, we read the websites smiley) and wanted to give people the opportunity to ask questions. I will check this site daily and make every effort to respond for the next two weeks, through Friday, July 26. [Edit: Let's make that August 8.] [Another edit: Okay, September 30!]

Please note that I cannot answer questions about specific cases, nor may I reveal my identity or any personal information. Any responses in this forum are not to be taken as legally binding, as they will be based only on what you tell me in your questions, not on the information in any actual case. While I will attempt to explain U.S. immigration policies, any opinions expressed are my own views and do not necessarily reflect the views of the United States Government.

I may not be able to respond to every post in this thread, and I will not answer abusive or insulting posts. Let's see how the conversation develops...

Please i got admission to study Aeronautical Tech Aviation Mgt at San Jacinto College Central, Pasadena, TX. My program is scheduled to start on the 26th August, 2013 unfortunately i was denied visa on the 23rd July 2013. Below is how the interview went;

CO: GOOD-MORNING! CAN I HAVE YOUR PASSPORT?

ME: HERE IS IT MA'AM (I GAVE IT TO HER)

CO: WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO AMERICA TO DO?

ME: I AM GOING TO AMERICA TO STUDY

CO: CAN I HAVE YOUR I-20 AND VISA APPLICATION CONFIRMATION?

MEsadI GAVE THEM TO THEM)

CO: WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE SCHOOL YOU INTEND TO STUDY AT?

ME: SAN JACINTO COLLEGE CENTRAL, PASADENA, TX.

CO: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SAN JACINTO COLLEGE CENTRAL?

ME: I CHOSE SAN JACINTO COLLEGE CENTRAL BECAUSE SAN JACINTO COLLEGE CENTRAL HAS A GREAT RECORD OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN AERONAUTICAL TECHNOLOGY AVIATION MANAGEMENT, ALSO THE STAFF-STUDENT RELATIONSHIP AT SAN JACINTO COLLEGE CENTRAL IS WONDERFUL AND CORDIAL ESPECIALLY WHEN AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT IS INVOLVED.

CO: WHAT COURSE?

ME: AERONAUTICAL TECHNOLOGY AVIATION MANAGEMENT

CO: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE AERONAUTICAL TECHNOLOGY AVIATION MANAGEMENT?

ME: I CHOSE AERONAUTICAL TECHNOLOGY AVIATION MANAGEMENT BECAUSE I WANT TO ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE THAT WILL ENABLE ME TO CONTRIBUTE IN CHECKING AIR MISHAPS IN MY COUNTRY'S AVIATION INDUSTRY WHICH HAS BEEN ON THE INCREASE IN RECENT YEARS.

CO: WHO IS SPONSORING YOU?

ME: MY UNCLE IS SPONSORING ME

CO: WHERE WOULD YOU STAY IN THE US?

ME: I WILL STAY OFF-CAMPUS BECAUSE SAN JACINTO COLLEGE CENTRAL DOES NOT PROVIDE ON-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION FOR STUDENTS

CO: HAVE YOU TRAVELED OUT OF NIGERIA BEFORE?

ME: NO

CO: SORRY YOUR APPLICATION DOES NOT QUALIFY YOU FOR AN AMERICAN VISA.

Please i know you deal with immigrant visas but i believe that you may be able to assist me. I have deferred my admission till spring (January) so i will be going back to the US Embassy by November/December. I still have my SEVIS Fee Payment receipt intact. What could be wrong with my visa application? Am i suppose to secure an apartment/accommodation prior to my visa interview?

Send them an e-mail and explain what happened. You need to get this resolved before you travel.

Your brother should apply for a non-immigrant visa by making an appointment online. He will need to be able to explain clearly what medical assistance he will need, where he will get it, and how he will pay for it. Best of luck!

I wish I could help, but I can't. I don't know enough about NIV to hazard a guess in this case, and I can't ask my NIV colleagues to comment on specific cases. I wish I had a clearer answer for you.

Visa Officer

Please I have been issued a U.S Visa since April. My work schedule has been too hectic fro me to fly into Abuja to pick it up. Problem now is that I lost the signed paper given to me at the embassy. Question is;

1. Does the extended stay of my Passport with the embassy carry any sort of penalty?

2. If I print out my appointment details and bring my old passports with me, would I be able to collect my passport?!

3. Can I pick up my passport any day of the week or do you have special days for pick ups?!

Hmm, then I would come to the Embassy or Consulate and tell the guards that my envelope is ripped and I need a new one. Keep insisting. Ask to speak to the IV Chief (who will now be exasperated with me for writing that). Otherwise, he will have to delay his travel. He shouldn't have opened the envelope.

My advice is to contact the Embassy in Abuja and ask them what to do. I don't work there, and I don't have the details of your case, so you should contact them yourself. Their contact information can be found at http://nigeria.usembassy.gov/welcome.html .

Hi,
I am asking this question out of sheer curiosity

I had a US Visa appointment recently and the following conversation ensured:

Consular Officer: What are you going to do in the US
me: I am going to attend a conference
CO: What do you do?
me: I work in XYZ company
CO: are you married?
me: Yes
CO: any kids?
me: No
CO: where in the US are you going?
me: washington
CO: what does you husband do?
me: He is self employed
CO: Alright, please pick up your passport and visa on monday, NEXT?
me: Is that all?
CO: yes please, NEXT

See, the issue here is that I spent a lot of time and energy gathering documents, paid bank almost 4k for bank statement, booked hotel etc, only for me to have a 30 seconds interview. I was not asked for my invitation letter, or financial documents.
Visa Officer, Does the embassy do a background check and verify all your documents beforehand? Because it looked too easy, given all the stories I have heard about the US embassy. Is there already a predetermination of whether they will give you the visa before your interview date and the interview a mere formality to get your finger prints done?

I am just very curious

Greetings! It can be very alarming for people who made sure all their documents are in order to arrive at an Embassy and find out that we're not really all that interested in your documents. Any document can be forged. What we're really interested in is the person at the window. It sounds to me like you presented yourself well and what you had to say matched the information on your application, so the officer didn't feel like s/he had to spend a lot of time digging into your case.

The truth is that most people's interviews are quick, uneventful, and successful. The interview isn't just a formality, though; the interview is what the entire decision hinges on. (Sometimes I see applicants who look great on paper, and I think "This will be easy," and then they totally blow it in the first ten seconds, prompting me to take a harder look. Other times I think a case will be terrible, but it turns out to be good. It all depends on the interview.)

Congratulations! NVC will check to be sure it's documentarily complete. If it is, and if the case is current, it'll be sent to the overseas post for the next available appointment. (This can take a while, though. NVC processes a huge volume of cases.) Hope to see you soon!

Sorry, I don't know what this is in reference to...

Later: Oh wait, now I know which posts were yours. You sound like the sort of person who is credible and highly organized, and the same personality characteristics that made you bring all your documentation were the characteristics that led to your visa being approved. To be fair, if you'd shown up without any documents, maybe the officer would have been suspicious. But it's clear that you presented yourself so well that the officer felt no need to check your papers. smiley
