The 2002 model do have a lot of get up and go when the engine is maintained. The 2002 Passat’s had the engine sludge problem, so the first thing you need to do is get the 17 digit VIN number which is at the bottom of the windshield on the driver’s side. Then call or go to a VW Dealership to make sure the car you’re looking at has had all the recalls done. If it didn’t have the sludge recall done don’t buy it. All so make sure there are no signs of overheating. Take off the plastic engine top and look with a flashlight for any antifreeze sitting on the engine. I would start the car with the A/C on and let it sit and run for at least 30 minutes to see if it will over heat. If the seller will not allow don’t buy it. When you take it on a test drive press the gas to the floor, there should be a slight delay then the turbo should kick in and the car will get to 60 miles per hour very quick. If the Passat does not have this power kick then the turbo is broke don’t buy it. Also when test driving the car make sure you can handle the slight delay between the time you press on the gas and the car moving. All 1.8T and 2.0T Passats have this. You get used to it. The best thing is to stop short of a turn then let the car roll right before you need the power then press on the gas and the car moves quick. The Passat as with all German cars handles very well, it will cost more to maintain than American or Japanese cars but the ride and drive is worth it. I have 145,000 miles on my Passat and I expect it to go over 250,000 before I get rid of it. Always make sure that all of the lights on the outside of the car is working. The 2002 will have lights on both sides make sure they’re working if there not then replace the bulbs. The car can have problems if one of the lights are burned out. The ABS light could come on. When you have a problem just go to the internet you can fix a lot of the problems yourself, but always use VW parts DO NOT use aftermarket parts you’ll have problems. Good luck have fun enjoy the German experience

The 2002 model do have a lot of life and go when the engine Is well maintained or care for. The 2002 Passat’s had the engine sludge problem if its not well maintained, so the first thing you need to do is get the 17 digit VIN number which is at the bottom of the windshield on the driver’s side. There will be no sludge problem when you care for the car has tune up @ every 3000miles very compolsory ok. its not all the 02 that was recall ok Precisely its the gl model. All so make sure there are no signs of overheating. Take off the plastic engine top and look with a flashlight for any antifreeze sitting on the engine. start the car with the A/C on and let it sit and run for at least 30 minutes to see if it will over heat.
