Although so much has been said about the corrupt nature of personnel of the Nigerian Police Force, apart from the high level of corruption that has bedeviled the operation of the outfit, the individual policeman and policewoman could be refers to as? ….. Somebody should borrow me a word. grin

Recently, I was going for a show, and I was supposed to pick a cousin of mine who just returned from the UK on my way. Though I did not know where he was precisely but we have agreed that I should pick him up at Bode Thomas junction, opposite a big roundabout which has the Surulere stadium is on the other side. On getting there I met my cousin, he entered, but at that point I have already drove pass the nearest U-turn to head towards Ikeja. So I had to stylishly and illegally make use of the next exit, which meant for vehicles coming from opposite direction and before I could say jack the policemen at the roundabout flashed torchlight and asked me to pull over, one of them approached us and accused me of following the wrong road.

So I apologized of which he accepted , but told me that if it were to be LASTMA that caught me, that I will not escape a fine of 25k but I should pay 10K and go. Immediately I told my cousin to alight from the vehicle and move far away because his accent could increase my charges if it gets to theknowledge of the policeman. I begged him that I have only 2k on me that he should please take it, he refused and threatened to impound the vehicle and hand it over to LASTMA the following day.

What surprised me was that after a long plea, the policeman asked if i have my ATM that we can quickly go and collect more cash to complete the money. I agreed and the policeman entered the car, he followed us to the ATM point and after collecting the money we dropped him off at him duty post. Guess What? … the next roundabout heading towards his duty post was far so that told me to follow ONE WAY. NIGERIAN POLICE NA WA!

U really bleeped up, U should've insisted on the 2k...Every Nigerian Policeman standing on check point will even take less, cus they need the money badly. Never take a policeman to Bank or Atm, they are very dangerous.

Its quite pathetic.,,, it has become a rare thing to seee any lagos car owner who has not taken the police to atm. Mine was at Ozumba just after lawschool. I was testing this driver, and sat with him at the front. I had just finished warning him about the traffic lights and this dude, obviously enjoying the power of my v6 sped across in a futile effort to beat the light. The next thing we knew was this police power bike trailing us. Kowing fully well that they will catch up to us at the lekki toll plaza, I odered my "James Bond" driver to pull over... Well to cut long story short, we made a turn to first bank to withdraw money to avoid impounding. And to think the driver had the guts to promise me that as sOon as i pay his first salary, he will balance me...... Anyways, u know the rest. Anyway, this happened around 12pm and the Lastma yard is just 2mins drive........

You needed to be there to witness the scene. There was no amount of begging i dint do. He refused and it was about 11:15pm. i dont know what you expect me to do. Also, this is not about castigating the police but rather the dimension the level of corruption is taking with our so called police force.

What is following someone to the ATM compared to collecting bribes and giving change on the highway?? Have seen this happen way too often. Even soldiers do nowadays. Too bad.

Fvck you and your dirty mouth. angry

What level of corruption? You should be more concerned about the level at which Nigerians like you break the law.

You knew the law and you still broke it. You didn't want to face the penalty, yet you broke the law again and bribed a policeman.

People like you should be given extended prison sentences. Ediot angry

In as much as the policeman should not be taking bribes, you gave him a reason to collect from you.
WHY DID YOU USE THE WRONG ROAD
So as much as you want to castigate the policeman, you got what you deserved.
If you hadn't broken the law, the policeman would have been begging you for N200 instead of collecting N10k from you.

In all you brought this upon yourself

chuckjojo and pdude una head correct, oga broke the rules and is complaianing that police collected bribe from him, no be you give them chance.

We know that either which way police will still collect from you but you gave them chance to demand 10k from you.
Like i said that 10k could have been N200 instead

It's not okay for police to collect bribe but it's alright for you to break the law lipsrsealed

It is realy no news that soldiers have fallen in line behind the police in this ugly act. I think this started in the late 2006 when millitary-civilian contact became all too frequent. Hence they started acting like civilians, beaming while u hand them 50naira (which seems to now be the standard toll). You give them a hundred and they hand you 50 in return.

Realy realy sad.

something similar happened to my dad in ph, the poor old man was harassed to the point he had to pay 140k(one Hundred and forty thousand) that he made an illegal turn, the man followed him to d atm,got 100k, and the following day my dad paid forty, i was so mad when i heard this like two weeks after. his wasn't a police officer it's some kind of lasma ph type, i dunno wat they r called cos i don't live in ph. But i was really mad. Poor man always tries to avoid any kind of whala.

I guess what op is trying to say is, rather than watch people commit the one-way crime, set up some system to prevent such crime. But I tell you these days, except you havNt experienced it, they(police) even hide themselves and pray u commit the crime and they just pounce on you from all angle. If you watch well, you will realise they are happy and excited. Rather than being upset that a crime has been committed.
Re: SHAMEFUL: Policeman Followed Me To The ATM by stormm: 9:20pm On Jul 30, 2013
@OP, this story get as e be o.

1. There is no roundabout on Bode Thomas. And the only semblance of a roundabout is Adeniran Ogunsanya junction.
2. National Stadium gate is nowhere near Bode Thomas.
3. Going out of Bode Thomas, either way, will lead you to Alaka or Babs Akerele.
4. I am still trying to understand how you got into this mess from your explanation

I am not going to exonerate the OP for breaking the law and making it worse by bribing his way out.

I knew that the Nigerian police case was past redemption on the day they went to my day's office, a distance of more than 5km to their nearest station and got him arrested for printing police id cards.

The old man never had or owned a printing machine but one old guillotine machine used for cutting of paper to smaller sizes.

A call to a lawyer was even more disheartening, a demand of 3k before leaving his office. I just bailed my dad the un-official way, blame me as much as you can I wasn't ready to make my dad a victim of police rascallity.

The nigeria police case is past redemption.

Useless police; asking you to deliberately commit same offence he originally caught you for for his selfish gains. Like some people have advised, never take them to ATM again. Some of them are deadlier, more wicked and dangerous than an armed robber.

In this case, the OP knew what he was doing and deliberately took an illegal route. Read it again. If I were the OP, I would have saved myself justifiable bashing by not creating a thread for the incident.

Seriously i think de curruptn in de NPF has gone beyond descriptn. Usually, dey demand 4 N50 frm transporters on check points. Dere ws dis day I witnessd it, de driver in front of our vehicles said he had no N50, de police man asked him 2 bring de note he had. De driver gave him a N500 note n y other vehicles were queued up at de check point waitin 2 be given pass, he gently walked ova 2 de road side n gave de N500 2 his 'oga @ de top' who ws seated dere, who inturn gave him N450 change 2 give de driver. Its no longa a hidden thing, dey do it in broad day light.
