Driver charged in bus accident that killed 8-month-old Angela Paredes in West New York
WEST NEW YORK - Officials say the driver of a bus that lost control, went up on a sidewalk, killing an 8-month-old in a stroller, has been charged.
Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari says Idowu Daromola, 48, faces charges of reckless driving and operating a vehicle while on cell phone. He has also been charged with second degree death by automobile.
The mayor describes the incident at the intersection of John F. Kennedy Boulevard East and 56th Street in West New York as a freak accident.
The Sphinx commuter bus was making a regular stop when it lost control, hit a lamp post and struck five cars along Boulevard East.The lamp post hit a stroller being pushed by the infant's mother. Eight-month-old Angela Paredes was given CPR by officer Mike Stetson, taken to Jersey City Medical Center and was pronounced dead.
The 14-year veteran officer is drawing praise from the people he serves after trying to save the infant's life.
"It's hard, it's part of the job," Stetson says. "You have to do it. We're not just here to be the bad guys, we're here to do the job and save someone's life if we can."
Four people in a parked car were taken to Hoboken Medical Center. All were treated and released. The mother of the infant was not injured.
Daromola is being treated at Jersey City Medical Center. Bail has been set at $250,000.
