Mode 9 Alphabetical Order/megalomaniac Disorder by Trojan00(m): 6:22pm On Aug 01, 2013
What exactly is megalomaniac disorder? It is a mental illness or condition in which somebody (in this case mode9) has an exaggerated belief in their own importance or power. Hold up! Wait! Yeah I said it and since everybody is scared to say it, lemme do the honors. But before I go any further lemme start from the very beginning.
I am 22years old. I’m relatively young but when it comes to my taste in music , its ageless. I first came across mode9 when I was in js1, yes ooh js1 and I was blown away by the track elbow room and ‘head’ even though I didn’t really understand what the latter meant at that time. Then he came out with cry and Nigerian gals and I worshipped him because he was fresh, dope and he brought class into the rap game. Dusting off the likes of Eedris , ruggedman (who especially didn’t go out without a fight)
However in the last couple of years I have had to watch him degenerate into a joke. Its like having to watch your father, who used to be a great warrior battle with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. Guys trust me its pathetic.
On his ‘new day’ track on the mixed tape ‘Occupy The throne’, he reiterated that he spits ‘GROWN MAN’ music but I find that hard to believe when he makes metaphors relating to (but not limited to) superman, avatar the last air bender, Godzilla, ironman etc. To show you how childish uncle mode is on the track mentioned above he said
‘one twitter hater said my flow sucked, I laughed when I saw it and his ass got blocked’
He mentioned on the track ‘let it go’ in his new album alphabetical order that he let the lyricist on the roll award (which is the ONLY award he seems to win) to vector. And in order to make himself feel better he featured Vector on this said album, a track titled ‘Zoning out’. Vector rapped for 1:53 and mode9 rapped for an alarming 5:28. Worthy of note is that on the other tracks in the album he usually used around 2:30 or at most 3:00. Meaning he was trying REAL HARD to beat vector but in my humble opinion Vector bleeped him in less time. I even dozed a couple of times when he was rapping. To show you vector is stronger lyrically, vector featured mode9 on the track v9 cypha in vector’s ‘second coming’ album mode9 used 0:57 vector 1:25 and vector still killed him.
I used to strongly believe that Mode9 is the best rapper ever in Nigeria but he has convinced me beyond reasonable doubt how wrong I am. This is simply because of his inability to adapt and change with the tide of time. For example ; if you know Eminem well, I mean Eminem of ‘Marshal Matthers LP’ , ‘The Real Slim Shady’ and ‘The Eminem show’ , you would never believe that he would ever feature someone of Rhianna’s reputation on a track. He would rather make mockery of her on a song. But Eminem realized times were changing and he made the necessary change.
This is not to say that there isn’t any glimpse of the mode9 I used to love very much. He did well on the track novacane (I can argue that I loved the track only for its intro though), industry diva , one for one, black rap messiah
He keeps saying he raps for the street. Bros which street be that? The street listens to olamide, ice prince, terry g, reminisce, iyanya , m.i and not that thing u call rap. You said you cant leave rap alone because the game needs you, that’s a lie bros you have an insatiable appetite to stay relevant. And finally in the words of your track 4 ‘he who does not feel me’ , you have done what is required of you , so I have to second the motion already moved by Muna ;
