Daily Manna: Paradigm of Chastity

Thursday 08, August 2013

TEXT: TITUS 2:1-8

KEY VERSE: “To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands ...In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity” (Titus 2:5,7).

The world writhed in moral pain and spiritual shock some twenty-five years ago, when a famous American televangelist was found to have engaged in secret involvement with prostitutes in sleazy motels. There were incriminating pictures that revealed the preacher’s sin with one of his consorts showing up to claim she posed naked for him in one of the photographs. Later, the culprit confessed, reading King David’s masterpiece of poetic contrition in Psalm 51. But much damage had been inflicted on the Name of God. One prostitute declared: “I wouldn’t want him around my children.” His indiscretion hurt his soul, the body of Christ and gospel-preaching efforts.

God is keenly aware of the present and eternal dangers that arise when believers and leaders in the church refuse to abide by this biblical instruction: “Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity” (2 Timothy 2:19). It is a constant reminder that breathes on every page of the Holy Writ.

In the text today, God inspired Apostle Paul to write that we all should be “discreet, chaste… that the word of God be not blasphemed… and in all things showing thyself a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity … that he that is of a contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you” (Titus 2:5,7,cool.

The doctrine of holiness, righteous living, love, faith, patience, preaching, studying the Word of God etc. must first abide in the leader and believers in Christ before they can impart them. It is the highest level of hypocrisy to preach and not practise what you preach. Heaven’s severe judgment will fall on those who perpetrate this transgression if they do not repent.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A soul-winner cannot offer the sinner what he does not possess.
