ceejayluv: Why can't you consult google before throwing insult? According to China's top meteorologists, the chances that the skies will open up over the "bird's nest" stadium at the Olympics opening ceremony on August 8, 2008 are 50/50. But the Chinese government isn't known for taking chances -- especially when they've got a huge arsenal of anti-aircraft cannons loaded with silver iodine bullets. "We will use catalytic agents to force the rain clouds over the National Stadium to fall down prior to the opening ceremony," Zhang Qiang, who is in charge of Beijing's artificial rainmaking projects, told the state-run China Daily. Even though the practice is common in China's drought-plagued northwest -- China has the world's largest rainmaking force, employing over 3,000 people -- many scientists question it's effectiveness. Still, Beijing is undeterred, especially considering its other big reason for pulling out the big rain guns: to get rid of the smog. Under its Olympic pledge, Beijing must meet World Health Organization levels of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ground-level ozone, and lower particle concentrations (aerosol levels) to those found in major cities in developed countries. While Beijing has plans to turn off its own factories and prohibit traffic during the Games, experts have discovered that much of the city's pollution drifts in from other cities in nearby Hebei province, full of factories and cars, and from inner Mongolia, which is rife with sand, dust and toxic smelter plants. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_seeding http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/world/2006-06-29-china-rain_x.htm 1 Like |

Rain making or "holding" is more scientific dan "jujuistic" . It just involves injecting a significant amount of some rain-bearing substances( like silver iodide) in the atmosphere. This must be done when dia is high humidity( when d air above has high moisture content). This substance can now quicken d formation of low clouds that bear rainfall. On the other hand rain formation can also be subverted by injecting some substances unto d atmosphere to shatter low clouds formation. This normally leads to heavy wind that helps in d shattering process. Rain making can not be done during dry season cos d air is not moisture ladden. |

From an African point of view, rainmaking is one of the magico-religious powers supposedly possessed by certain practitioners of shamanism, fetishism, spiritism, totemism, and some of the varied traditions that come under the rubric of African Traditional Religion. The idea is that a human being, by relying on some spiritual agency or other extra-mundane means such as "the gods" or spirits of ancestors, can gain momentary control of the elements and so produce sunshine or rainfall as he deems fit. In modern times, scientists have sometimes attempted to induce or increase rainfall, usually to stave off drought. Known as artificial precipitation, it is usually done using airplanes or rockets to sow clouds with catalysts such as dry ice, silver iodide and salt powder, to make clouds rain or increase precipitation. But as is obvious from the wild fires raging in some parts of the US, artificial precipitation seldom yields lasting or satisfactory results. In fact, it is rather expensive and rarely cost-effective. That accounts for its extremely minimal use around the world. Although many in Africa still believe in rainmaking as a spiritual art, it is interesting that in the US the practice began as a kind of circus stunt by which showmen attempted to entertain audiences. In other words, it was a trick performed by entertainers! In any case, attempts to bring rain directly have waned with the development of the science of meteorology, the advent of laws against fraud in developed countries, and advancements in communication technology. However, Christians, Jews, and adherrents of other monotheistic religions still believe that God reserves absolute control of the elements, although they concede that human factors are at least partly to blame for global climate change. Christians, in particular, believe that fervent prayer, as demonstrated by Elijah the Prophet, can induce beneficial weather changes (James 5:16). |

So if African abi Nigerians can control the rain, why are they not using it to enhance their farming instead of the famine we are known for. Sudan, Kenya always need some rain so badly at certain time of the year, why not be practical? Imagine if all the world's food are grown in Africa courtesy of rainmakers! I think God was doing initial experiments when he created Blackman. 1 Like |

booqee: now where are those atheist when u need to bust their arssewhat do u wanna bust , rain making or holding is a highly scientific method, known as cloud seeding . It involves spraying a chemical compound in the clouds, usually silver dioxide, to reduce precipitations. If u observe jb during some of their construction works in the rainy season, u ll c dem spray these chemicals from a truck, though i believe its usually with permits from the government.its just like when u put akanwu in ur pot of beans to increase the boiling point so that it ll cook faster. the rain clouds does not actually disaPPEAR, RATHER in a rain stopping sense , these rain clouds are shifted by the spray of these chemicals to some other points. Nothing is lost nothing is gained, there is a material balance.the downside and why it is not used in most developed countries is that if u push these rain clouds away from region A to region B, then it will rain so massively, in region B that it can lead to floods. Now in our traditional settings, the only explaination is that these rain makers have found a substance in nature that is similar to silver dioxide, that can do the same function, that the y keep secret. If u believe that someone can make some incantations and the rain will stop or disappear, then u also believe that, someone can turn the day into night, turn the night into morning. |

Here we go again, believing in ilussions like this are the reasons we can't keep mere streets clean and why we are kept in bondage by churches, mosques and primitive leaders. The water that falls from the sky as rain are the water that evaporated from the oceans, rivers, streams and whatever that is watery on earth, that comes down when warm moist air cools high above the atmosphere and condenses to liquid-rain.It is solely determined by the atmospheric condition. Everything has an answer, just find out and set yourself free. |

For rituals intended to invoke rain, see Rainmaking (ritual). Rainmaking, also known as artificial precipitation, is the act of attempting to artificially induce or increase precipitation, usually to stave off drought. According to the clouds' different physical properties, this can be done using airplanes or rockets to sow to the clouds with catalysts such as dry ice, silver iodide and salt powder, to make clouds rain or increase precipitation, to remove or mitigate farmland drought, to increase reservoir irrigation water or water supply capacity, or to increase water levels for power generation. In the US, rainmaking was attempted by traveling showmen. It was practiced in the old west but may have reached a peak during the dust bowl drought of the American West and Midwest in the 1930s. The practice was depicted in the 1956 film The Rainmaker. Attempts to bring rain directly have waned with development of the science of meteorology, the advent of laws against fraud and increased communication technology, with some exceptions such as cloud seeding and rain dances or other forms of prayer, which are still practiced today. Prayer for more rain is also a cross cultural practice in Christian and Muslim Ethiopia as well as in areas where people keep "traditional" non-scriptural religions.[citation needed] In the Christian areas the Defteras (learned clerics of the Orthodox Christian Church) believed to have the wisdom to arrest the rain, to bring hail to farms of individuals who refuse to comply with religious rules as well as to bring more rains when the rainy season fell short of giving the usual amount of rain needed for growing cereals.[citation needed] The term is also used metaphorically to describe the process of bringing new clients into a professional practice, such as law, architecture, consulting, advertising, or investment banking – in general, processes that bring money into a company. Cloud seeding Since the 1940s, cloud seeding has been used to change the structure of clouds by dispersing substances into the air, potentially increasing or altering rainfall. In spite of experiments dating back to at least the start of the 20th century, however, there is much controversy surrounding the efficacy of cloud seeding, and evidence that cloud seeding leads to increased precipitation on the ground is highly equivocal. One difficulty is knowing how much precipitation might have fallen had any particular cloud not been seeded. Operation Popeye was a US military rainmaking operation to increase rains over Vietnam during the Vietnam War in order to slow Vietnamese military truck activity in the region. Rainmaking is not geoengineering, which seeks to alter climate, but a form of weather modification, as it seeks only to change local weather. ↑Jump back a section William Reich's Cloudbuster Austrian-American psychoanalyst William Reich designed a "cloudbuster" in the United States with which he said he could manipulate streams of orgone energy (which he claimed was a primordial cosmic energy) in the atmosphere to induce rain by forcing clouds to form and disperse. It was a set of hollow metal pipes and cables inserted into water, which Reich argued created a stronger orgone energy field than was in the atmosphere, the water drawing the atmospheric orgone through the pipes. Reich called his research "Cosmic Orgone Engineering". ↑Jump back a section Rain dances and prayer In many societies around the world, rain dances and other rituals have been used to attempt to increase rainfall. Some Native Americans used rain dances extensively. European examples include the Romanian ceremonies known as paparuda and caloian. Some United States farmers also attempt to bring rain during droughts through prayer. These rituals differ greatly in their specifics, but share a common concern with bringing rain through ritual and/or spiritual means. Typical of these ceremonies was then-governor of Georgia Sonny Perdue's public prayer service for rain, |

Some of these rain makers usually draw a circle on the ground in the midst of which they placed a totem bearing some white and red pieces of cloth. Now as they burn those leaves and do their mumbo jumbo you would notice them muttering some words and at times audibly. Now what's the role of spoken words in all these, bearing in mind that the good Book attributes much power to Words. Agreed there may be some scientific way to make/hold rain but many are spiritual atleast in African setting. |
