Students of Government Secondary School (GSS) Ilorin on Sunday night went on rampage, burning down school properties and equipment worth several millions of naira.
NAN reports that facilities destroyed by the rampaging students included the school bus, 102 laptops, some desktop computers, television set, principal's car, 6 trophies won by the college and examination records.
According to the Principal of the Junior Secondary School, Mr Muyideen Muhammed, trouble started when the students protested the maltreatment of a junior student by another senior student.
He said that the student alleged that one Aminu Adamu, an SS3 student, allegedly beat a junior with iron rod.
Muhammed said that by the time he was informed and rushed to the school at about 8.30 p.m. the administrative block and the school bus were already in flames.
A lot of havoc had been done before the arrival of men of the fire brigade, he added.
The principal denied allegation from some students that the riot was in protest of the poor feeding and lack of potable water in the school.
When NAN visited the school the administrative building was still burning while students were confined to their hostels. Inspecting the extent of damage, Kwara Deputy Governor Joel Ogundeji condemned the action of the students, who, he added, were supposed to be leaders of tomorrow.
Ogundeji said that government would review schools' exchange programme because violence and wastage of state resources would not be tolerated in the state.
He directed the school authorities to compile names of the 265 students allegedly involved in the dastardly act, including their leader, Aminu Adamu, an SS3 student. Meanwhile, anti-riot policemen and men of the civil defence corps are now providing heavy security at the school.
