Scene of the protest

The Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, has appealed to thousands of Itsekiri protesting the bid by their monarch to jettison their traditional beliefs to remain calm, saying he was already meeting with stakeholders to resolve the matter.

Uduaghan, who arrived the palace at about 3.45pm on Sunday, was met by the surging protesters, who appealed to him to mediate in the crisis.

An online news portal, THE WILL, reported that the governor, was allowed into the palace without his security aides, came out after about 15 minutes to address the protesters.

Urging the protesters to exercise restraint, he said he had discussed with Atunwase II, the chiefs and the youth over the issue and expressed gratitude to the protesters for conducting themselves in a peaceful manner.

The palace of the Olu of Warri was barricaded for the third day by the protesters who erected canopies in the front gate.

Some women and youths also erected canopies by the side fence of the palace where they cooked and danced.

Itshekiri masquerades were also brought in to spice up the protest as they banged the gate of the palace while the protest lasted.

The protest was sparked off by the monarch’s decision to, among others, abolish the ancient Itshekiri masquerades which are paraded during traditional festivals.

While the monarch was inside the palace as the scene was playing out, only a few chiefs, leaders and youth representatives were allowed to enter the palace by the protesters.

Several meetings were held by groups who adjourned and reconvened after some hours. The groups were said to have also met with the monarch.

Atunwatse II had few days ago declared in a document titled “The New Order of Iwere Kingdom,” that the “Ogiame” title which had been in existence for over 500 years would cease to exist following the recent consecration of the kingdom to God.

“Ogiame” means “King of the River,” according to the history behind the Itsekiri throne.

The monarch, in the document, said he had renounced his allegiance to the “Umalokun” (goddess of the sea), land and sky as well as the “Ogiame” title to which his ancestors had pledged allegiance to “Umalokun” and other deities.

Why would a Traditional ruler just wake up and abolish a tradition that has been in existence way before his great-great-great-great-grandfathers were born?! angry If he feels the need to make a real change, why not abolish the mornarchy entirely?! Its not like he serves any real or tangible purpose to Mankind..

Are you sure you're okay, sir?

Why did you abolish the killing of albinos?

and the killing of twins?

Who told you the throne is meant (only) for idol worshippers?

As a christian, and a practising one; and the only one entitled to the throne, are you saying I'll denouce my religion before mounting the throne...?
Y'all haven't seen nothing yet . If I, acidosis is made the King, I'll single-handedly burn down every single fetish material and immaterial idol... I don't take sh¡t..

My kind of Christianity does not condole nonsense... I don't mix God with idol..

I say again; burn them down and arrest all those jobless goats hiding under those smelly attire called masquerades terrifying the streets and embarrasing the 21st century atmosphere...

Lmao...reminds me of the day a Pastor descended on a masquerade grin

He beat the hell out of the jobless goat grin

Our Itsekiri brothers and sisters should calm down. shoo!

Afterall, their fellow Obas over here (SW) are already surrendering to Christ and attending RCCG services at the camp.

They should allow their Oba to join them.

This is the bane of Africans, the ease at which we jettison our values and readily embrace that of strangers.
What is wrong in him stepping down from that seat if he isnt comfortable with the practices?
How in the world can someone rise from bed one morning and proceed to destroy information that have taken ages to gather?
How would we have gotten to know about Buddha and the gods of Hinduism if the Chinese and Indians had thrown away their ancestry so readily?
Why are some people so stuupid? Its fine that you have converted but the people are against it, leave them fùcking be!

My brother, given the age we are in, traditional beliefs/practices doesn't seem acceptable/appealing BUT the throne which presides over a community isn't just to be sat on to earn salary, to receive gifts from the governor, have multiple wives etc. The throne is there to promote and protect the cultural/indigenous believes of the locals. Apparently we shouldn't still have kings since they do not serve any purpose since the Nigerian constitution has eroded their powers and I think the only reason they are still there is to preserve culture/tradition and everything it brings not wipe it away and jettison it for further 'European/Arab' imports.

If the king cannot continue or pride himself with the culture and belief system of his fore-fathers then he should step-down and hand over the crown.

exactly the same question am trying to ask. Why will a man wake up to impose his own mentality and religion on another people.
It isn't mandatory he becomes the olu of warri. If he isn't in support of the religion the people practise, let him relinquish the post.
