SeunAero: The impasse is over. Operations have commenced today at the various cargo sheds. This is not true. The freight forwarders and clearing agents have had a meeting, where issues such as under declaring of cargo weight were brought up. The sheds are still locked, and they are scheduled to have another meeting at 10am tomorrow. |

These are cases of outright stealing of cargo from restricted areas (warehouses) without payment of customs duty into tthe coffers of the Federal government of Nigeria. Surprisingly warehousing charges are paid to the custodians of the goods-SAHCOL and NAHCO but none to the customs/Federal government. So who is fooling who? There are currently over 3500 cases of consignments that developed wings and disappeared from the custody of' the custodians.' Customs are asking the custodians to account for the missing cargo and the duty payable there on. |

Recently there was a change of gaurd of customs officers from the Customs area comptroller down to the least officer. In the course of this change over between the out going and incoming officers, the custodians of the goods at the airport-SAHCOL and NAHCO warehouses allowed over 3500 various consignments of different values to develop wings and disappear without duty payment. The customs is right on this one, and the only way to make the custodians of these goods to account for lost revenue is to shut down their operations. SIMPLE! 1 Like |

@Dantedasz, I got a couple of questions for you. Do you mean to tell me that my brother's stuff that he imported for his wedding that was to hold last weekend is justifiably being held up in SAHCOL warehouse by NCS for no known fault of his? If the Nigerian Customs Service personnel were involved in sleazy deals with NAHCO and SAHCOL to cheat the FGN, should an innocent other Nigerian, whose only "crime" is bringing in consignments via the ONLY two approved bonded warehouses in Nigeria be punished for it? How come NCS did not simply go to setup a foolproof system in the warehouse to collect it's tolls, instead of holding everybody's item to ransom? Do you know that life-support equipment imported to give a little more life to several sick people, denied of basic health-care by our forever-inept, gluttonous, money-guzzling and terribly stupid governments are caught up in that lock-down? Have you imagined what has happened to fresh-flowers worth millions of Nigeria, imported via MMIA by a contractor for supply held up in that warehouse since last week? Do you know that consignment of goods that were bound for Nigeria from all over the world since last week are stuck in some world capitals like Belgium and UAE, with the shippers not knowing what to do with them since there's no warehouse in Nigeria to receive same? Just like every other thing Nigerian, our people neever ever sit down to think through any action deeply before embarking on it. The same NCS that gave SAHCOL and NAHCO permission to setup bonded warehouses with fanfare, is the same now complaining that the government is shortchanged! Did they not design appropriate mechanisms or envision the effects of such warehouses on their forever insatiable revenue drive during the planning stages? Do you shutdown an entire system of receiving air-freighted goods into a country for more than a week in order to be able to enforce govermnment tax rules? IMO, it is only in the jungle - Nigeria - where someone would act the way NCS has acted here and get away with it. In other climes, they'd have paid so dearly and so heavily that their 10 lifetimes wouldn't be sufficient. Oh, I remember that their Controller-General did not even write his SSCE by himself! Its also particularly annoying that there seem to be almost no updates on this situation by the involved parties-Nigerian Customs,NAHCO and SAHCOL. Chinom: As an insider, i can tell you that the problem is simply greed and humongous corruption. There was a change of guard at the customs Airport command. The new boss is demanding an absurd amount of money from the customs agents. He wants a very huge bribe to allow for passage of all manner of goods. The above is false! Even though there was a change of the airport customs new comptroller, the said closure was from the comptroller general himself as the presence of FOU is all over the place at the various cargo sheds. However like I said earlier, operations had commenced earlier today. |

@celemel, Its a pity about your brothers wedding suit,but I just do not think there is any otherway to make SAHCOL and NAHCO management to produce the duty for those various consignments . The total duty for those 3500 consignments could run into billions of Naira-so we should look at the general good over the individual. The clearing system at our airports has been a mad house for ages with all kinds of touts and criminals polluting the system. If the Customs boss is trying to introduce sanity into the area of our economy I think he should be commended. All Nigerians need to take a look at the man in the mirror and ask ourselves why we always refuse to pay stipulated taxes or try to short cut them. The 3500 consignments removed from the airport belong to Nigerians and not aliens from Mars. A Nigerian will obey all laws and pay all taxes in Port Novo or Cotonu but immediately he gets to Seme or Idi Iroko borders in Nigeria will start thinking of avoiding payment of all taxes or resort to the unapproved bush paths. |

@DANTEDASZ You didn't provide any answers in your reply. We know the NCS is corrupt, abi? Then, we should as well shutdown Nigeria Customs Service, so that we sanitize it. Abi? Where were the NCS personnel when 3500 consignments "disappeared"? How do you define "general good" when a citizen whose only crime is originating from a jungle called Nigeria is made to bear the brunt of the ineptitude of another citizen in the same jungle? Let me provide an answer to the reason Nigerians pay in Cotonou, not Lagos: Simply because Cotonou has an attractive climate for clearing and forwarding. Lagos port doesn't! All the staff of NCS including Inde Dikko are only interested in making maximum money from the hapless citizen and punishing them (like this SAHCOL/NAHCO saga has shown) without any serious interest in the essence of their creation by law. NCS is now seen only as a money-making government parastatal, not as an agency that should exist to protect the national economy! Their staff look for the flimsiest of excuses to covert people's hard-earned properties for their girl friends, concubines, mistresses, cronies, fronts and wives, in the name of public auction! They arbitrarily fix rates on imported wares especially cars, depending on their mood, interest, target, etc. They are overlords and operate above the law. That is the Nigerian Customs Service! FROM AIRLINE - Latest News  !Even though we were hopeful the Warehouse would reopen today, as of 9:30 am LOS LT it remained closed for operations and customers are still not able to clear their shipments. As a result, we will not move any Cargo on today's flight either and will only accept new shipments when we have the go ahead from Lagos that the situation is back to normal. Again, I will keep you all informed if we receive more information this afternoon or tomorrow morning. If the situation is resolved by Friday, we will be able to move the cargo we currently have on hand on Saturday's flight and will begin accepting new shipments for Tuesday's flight next week. As usual, thank you all so much for your continued patience and understading of the situation. Thank you and have a wonderful day! |

Latest News ... GREAT NEWS  !I have received official notification that the Warehouse in LOS will be open for business as of tomorrow Sep 13th. Hope this information also helps you to advise your agents in LOS so that they can start the Customs process for shipments already at destination. This means, we have the go ahead to move cargo as of this Saturday's flight. As mentioned, on Saturday I will only move shipments that are already on hand. Please send me your requests for next week and I will confirm accordingly. I want to thank you again for being so patient ! Thank you all! |
