The battle line has once again been drawn between two rival cult groups: the Eiye confraternity in Somolu and the Aiye confraternity in Bariga, with the cultists taking on each other, gun to gun, in a show of power and supremacy over the last three consecutive days.

On Tuesday, September 3, in the Ajose area of Somolu, the Aiye group shot dead one Tunde Lawal, A.K.A Ogbon, an alleged member of the Eiye confraternity popularly called EFCC Boys.

Tunde had allegedly raped a five-month pregnant lady at the Ponraele area of Abule Ijesha, sparking anger in the Aiye group and leading to his killing.

At about 10.30 p.m. on Friday, September 6, suspected cultists stormed Fadipe Street, an area in Somolu, moved towards Oreofero where, unknown to them, residents of Popoola, Olorunkemi and Oreofero had laid ambush for them. The two sides engaged in a gun duel that lasted for hours.

The gun battle continued till Sunday, September 8, as the boys met intermittently at the canal separating Somolu and Bariga and engaged in duels.

The Root of the Rot

A source, who requested anonymity, said the boys causing the mayhem were well known in the community, adding that some of them who had just finished serving sentences in the Kirikiri Prison, and other members numbering over 100, were being led by one Yesiru.

According to the source: “The scene was like watching the movie, TROY. Cutlasses, sophisticated guns ranging from pump action guns and shot guns, and different weapons were used.

“Areas like Balogun, Anifowoshe ,Fadipe Ajose Okoh close Salami Odubanjo and all the streets around the canal became a ghost town as residents had to flee for their lives.”

The cultists have completely taken over Okoh Close, Majiyagbe, Fadipe, Anifowoshe, Odubanjo, Ajose, Fagbeyiro Sodimu and all the streets close to the canal.

Residents opine that the activities of the boys cannot be curtailed, claiming politicians are funding them.

The residents — who say that apart from Yesiru whose mother sells yam and beans, and Rasaki Oseni A.K.A Elewure, others are boys whose parents have relocated — are beginning to seek alternative housing options, with many already relocating out of the troubled streets.

The boys also capitalised on the opportunity to steal and vandalise public property. In the mayhem, people were robbed and some wounded...
