I AM AN AFRICAN
The street parades kings and queens,
a slave to poverty.
Sold their identity to survival.
Blessed them with tattered cloth as robe,
proclaim them as the pauper of the globe.
Gave them who they are not.
The corridors of power beguiled many,
bought their identity with pieces of silver,
possessed them with ‘Legion’,
top notch their cruelty and despicable character,
blessed them with insatiable hunger,
to cloud them of a redeemable soul.
The hunger of ‘me’, ‘myself’ and ‘I’ alone,
blind their conscience,
Until they forget who they are.
This street might betray my hope.
But they can’t take away who I am.
I am who I am
I am black
I am the hope she longs for
Her strength that fail or bow not
I am the heartbeat of her love
Her worrys, her pride, her cares
I am the son of the land
I am an African
And it stripes not of dignity
Or make me less of human
I am an African
I am an African
My skin might be black
It foretell not my future black
History might have hoisted my past with defeats
And now, it seems am fighting hard
To leave life’s miry clay
But like good soldier
I weary not, for the just cause every day
Soon, you shall hear and speak of my feat
