Nice write up. I think most people miss the point! Rap is basically poetry and i don't think much nigerians appreciate that fact. They'll prefer empty bars with just good beats to dance to. Pardon me to say this but "most nigerians aren't just intelligent enough to make sense out of real rap music" period!

obailala:
Contrary to ur insinuations, u need a lot of talent and/or brilliance to succeed in as an artist in Nigeria. Sorry to say this but Mode 9 may be talented but he isn't brilliant that's why he isn't succeeding. Rap may be an America thing but when u are so 'talented' to rap like an American (mode 9), u need some brilliance to tailor ur art to the Nigerian audience. That's exactly where M.I, olamide etc make the difference.

Nigerians in our inferiority complex may want to be like Americans, we try to talk like them, sing like them, dress like them, pretend to like what they like but the fact remains that we are Nigerians. So we see it as a treasure when we have someone serving us the American flavour in the Nigerian style.

brilliant post

Orikinla: There is no legendary rapper in Nigeria. The rappers the poster claims are fantastic can only boast of being rappers where there is no competition, in Nigeria. MI can only compete at high school performance level in the US. In a nation of over 160 million people and we are still counting our rappers and hip hop acts and they cannot make up a top 40 chart is PATHETIC. Majority of these hip hop clowns cannot get a record deal in the USl

You are right. But you also have to remeber that US is the birth place of rap music (Tupac, B.I.G etc). Therefore, it's only natural for Americans to excel at this genre of music. Nigerian rap musicians can not outshine Americans in their own game. It's just like expecting a US artiste to perform Fuji or Juju music better than K1 or King Sunny Ade.

Dagrin was hip hop..

Hip hop is a culture that knows no language but best served in the local..

I'm not yoruba and can't speak or hear a bit of it but GRIN held me down..

Olamide's not hip hop...naaaaah

Mode 9 started well but don't know what happened.

Phyno is the next best thing

Ill bliss's good but sometimes just go out of line with his vocals

M.I's dead and buried although started very well

Vector's jus there

Who else??

RIP dagrin

Well I think the thing about the acceptance of rap music (as we know it-especially in the american/foreign context) has to do with level of education and exposure.

There's too few of us that have and show appreciation for rap music in nigeria thats why its not making it as much as other music genres in the country

What we have instead is guys that have taken the rudiments and fundamentals of rap and have applied it to the nigerian setting-where there are many under educated and unexposed folk
Da grin and Olamide as well as many others have applied this principle in a strictly nigerian sense
What MI does is that he blends the two together in some tracks, applies either in different tracks

This is not a mode9 diss...but this may be why his music may seem uninspiring, dull and generally unappreciated, simply because he doesn't apply this rule. Ruggedman was the first shift from a sole application of the foreign rap style to a blend with nigerian style

Now about mode9's legendary status, I strongly disagree. He was only fortunate enough to fill the silent yearnings of those of us grown, nursed and exposed to rap the foreign way. We silently longed for our own nigerian kind. So there he came. Because there was no alternative, we rejoice in his advent.

It wasnt until MI showed up rapping that we knew mode9 was not it, because strictly speaking, MI is way more talented than 9 is. (This does not necessarily confer legendary status on MI, even though he is close, I am almost impressed with him)

Oh please, Rap was what the black slaves in USA used to subconsciously get away from their predicament.

You want Nigerians to see that as music, music isn't just about the lyrics but dance step, how it reflects on the history of the people and instruments used.

How can you expect a typical Igbo, yoruba or hausa man with diverse musical instruments, dance steps and lyrics that touch the deepest emotions/ test one's intellect to regard rap with any atom of seriousness.

Rap has never and will never be regarded as an intellectual music genre.

Imagine some of you having the audacity to look down on Nigerians for not respecting the music genre some one like Eminem belongs to. Rap music is known for utter bullsh*t. It gets you irritated instead of intellectually simulated.

Raps music was and is still for black slaves, descendants of black slaves or humans with slave mentality.

An average Nigerian suffers from superiority mentality and not slave mentality.
