Apple's New Iphone Launch Was A Record-breaker: 9 Million Sold In 3 Days by chumakk: 7:58am On Sep 24, 2013
Apple sold 9 million new iPhone 5S and 5C models in a three-
day launch that began Friday, a record-breaking streak that will
offer some much-needed assurances about Apple's ability to
design new products.
“This is our best iPhone launch yet–more than nine million new
iPhones sold–a new record for first weekend sales,” says CEO
Tim Cook. ”The demand for the new iPhones has been
incredible, and while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of
iPhone 5S, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments
regularly. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working
hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone.”
As thousands stood in long lines outside Apple stores, iPhone
users eagerly switched to the new operating system. More than
200 million phones now use the redesigned software. Apple
says it’s the fastest software upgrade in history.
Now, Apple is running out of iPhone 5S models, and online
orders will be shipped only in the coming weeks.
Shares of Apple rose 4% to $486.05 in pre-market trading.
Observers had hoped Apple might offer numbers on the very
first day, and when it did not, some worried the new phones
had fallen flat. Instead, they greatly exceeded expectations. For
example, Pipper Jaffray’s Gene Munster had forecast just 5
million in new sales.
The new iPhones come in the 5S model and the 5C. The
iPhone 5S, sheathed in aluminum, has a faster processor and a
new finger print scanner–German hackers already say they’ve
broken it--and costs $200 with a contract. It’s available in a
muted color range: silver, gold and dark gray. By contrast, the
iPhone 5C costs less ($100 with a contract), sells in a variety of
candy-colored shells and is aimed at foreign customers more
accustomed to cheaper smartphones.
The iPhone 5C does have a higher price point than most
analysts expected. The iPhone 5C sells for $550 without a
contract, and analysts believed Apple would sell it between
$300 to $400.
Still, Apple’s intentions with the lower-cost model are clear. It
means to attract the type of overseas customers who might’ve
felt uneasy with the price tags attached to the older models.
Apple’s profits aren’t growing like they once were, and so it is
pinning its hopes on the surging sales in Russia, India and
China–particularly China, where it’s currently losing to low-
cost domestic phones powered by Google's Android operating
system. Additionally, Apple competes with products from
Microsoft, Nokia and Samsung.
Apple’s own operating system received a complete makeover.
The typography changed, and the system is bathed in bright
colors, like streaks from a Highlighter.
