What Has Your Church Done For Your Community ? by UyiIredia(m): 9:00am On Sep 29, 2013
It appears this is the kind that gets to catch folks attention on FP.

So what has your church done for your community. Do they help out in traffic direction, cleaning, health services, education, political rallies, charity etc ? Tell us how your church has been of immediate benefit to your area: apart from the loudspeakers that disturb on Sundays and every other day, despite the prohibitive laws LASG passed.

Your comments are welcome.

They only help in the spiritual department. They pray for the community grin

Even companies do more community work than churches these days. Churches are no longer what they used to be be in the old times. It's all about amassing wealth and keeping it in the church instead of spreading it around.

No, i'm not Catholic but i think the Catholic church has contributed more to this world than all these ogbanje penticostal churches that are only interesting in amassing wealth and buying private jets.

Nothing! irrespective of the fact that my community gave them land, contribute money to build the church, donates food items, buy car for the priest, sweep and clean the church building daily with out being paid.
all we are promised is a life after death. on my mother's birthday we have no food in the house but on our pastor's birthday we all contribute money and buy gifts for the pastor. when we complain the pastor told us to give thanks to god in our condition, meanwhile he (the pastor) is moving around town in his 35A model private jet.

Daystar, Latter Rain and TREM are popular pentecostal churches, especially in Lagos who aren't known for private jets and amassung wealth. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The fact that they're yet to buy private jets does not mean that they're not amassing wealth. Very few pentecostal churches can be said to be servants of the community.

I admire the pastor's kind gesture but i think community service should be an institutional thing. It's supposed to be a cardinal part of the church's ministry.

Even though I dont agree with most church teaching, there is this bible verse I cant throw out of window..

James 1:27
New King James Version (NKJV)

27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, andto keep oneself unspotted from the world.

In a sense there is some level of symbiotic relationship between members of the church and the church. Even with outsiders. Take Winners, for instance, they employ labor, their Shiloh leads to huge sales and profits for hotels since there is an overflow of people CU hostels (used as a camp) can take in. Many of their members businesses supply CU. CU in particular I know to have undertakeb corporate responsibility schemes. Students from other universities use our library.

The Catholic Church has contributed so much in the areas of health, education, charity etc.

I scarcely think anyone needs me to expantiate on this.

Who doesnt know?

...But we dont shout these things on the roof-tops.

...and we hardly use loud speakers to disturb.

It is a known fact that many Igbos are Catholic.

Catholicism is the major denomination in the east. Even a lot of those that are pentecostal today have their roots in the Catholic chuch but i don't think it's right to assume that every or most Igbos are Catholic even though you may be right.

The Catholic Church has also contributed to the fragile peace that exists in the country today.

Just look at how many Catholic Churches have been bombed and attacked by both Jihadists and even Christian vandals...how many statues and sacred objects defaced and damaged...how many Catholics killed. .yet our reply has always been peace and dialogue.

Italo.
Like you said elsewhere, the Catholic church stands in a world of it's when it comes to issues like this.

In this religious section, I think most our querries are targeted at the mercantilist moneycenter churches that proliferate every neighborhood in Nigeria.

We can agree on this one. You are, at least, more reasonable than many.

Believe me, I may not agree with the worship of Mary, but I would give my money to the Catholic church anytime.
They do a lot of great visible works in communities. I myself have , at one time or another , been a beneficiary of catholic community works.

True. Even in apologetics Catholics dominate and why not ? They operated a theocracy in Europe for centuries.

We Catholics also disagree with the worship of Mary...but that is a topic for another.

I'm happy that the Catholic Church has been able reach out its hand to benefit you...one way or the other.
