Interesting to also knw that the US govt is like the typical naija swagstar, living rich on borrowed 'coins'. With an external debt of USD 16.7Trillion, the clock is ticking for another Legislative-Executive showdown this month over raising the debt ceilling. Y am i so loving this?

@olrotimi, the problem with African leaders is that they praise mediocrity and have sychophants as advicers.

@CFCfan, that is why I like the parliamentary system of government. Even in advanced democracy like America the exucutive is beign held hostage by the opposition led chamber, imagine if that was to happen in any african country?

Yeah, the debt ceiling will be the next big fight. If the ceiling is not raised by October 17, the U.S would go into default. The FG will essentially be a dead-beat.

That's why the ruling party in most African States always ensure that they are also the majority in parliament. In Nigeria, both houses of the National Assembly have always been dominated by the PDP for the past 14 years.

Shutting down an economy because of healthcare seems evil (and it is, no matter how you slice it) but it may ultimately be an issue of self-preservation on the part of the politicians. Has anyone thought of one of the side affects of federally mandated healthcare being that voter registration skyrockets? Remember by law, government agencies must provide voter registration services. When was the last time you renewed your license, passport or filled out a government form that dealt with any service and WEREN'T offered the chance to register? Which could spell disaster for those that disenfranchise voters.

How's the Parliamentary system better? John Major, Tony Blair, and most recently David Cameron has been held "hostage" (as you put it) both by their own party, and by the opposition many times, in Canada as well, Steve Harper is not finding life easy as the PM, the government in a parliamentary system can be brought down and the Prime Minister changed within months of taking office, the PM in a parliamentary system is merely the leader of the majority party, and by that virtue the PM (could also be by coalition), and if he/she loses any vote of confidence, that government is over, and a new PM takes over either by coalition government or by a new election. There is instability in a parliamentary system ( this is its major disadvantage), and therefore, continuity of policy is not guaranteed. Do you truly know how the Parliamentary system actually operate, or were you just talking for the heck of it?.

Actually the Nigerian govt is better in that regards.
Our national "debt" is not more than $12billion or so.

What have you achieved with the NATIONAL DEBT you owe + all the OIL money since oil was discovered in Nigeria (which runs into trillions), what do you have to show for it? In the case of US, just go to the US embassy in Lagos/Abuja and all over the world, and see how people line up for visa from 2am, and ask yourself why everyone in the world wants to go to US, then you'll know what they did with their NATIONAL DEBT.

That is the Best system, people vote generally on party lines, its only on few occasions where there have been skirt & blouse(voting for a presidential candidate of a party and voting for parliamentary candiddate for another party) votes.
In Ghana the loosing candidate challenged the presidential elections even though his party lost parliamentary seats to the ruling party by 21 seats.
Africa is not ready for that, they will bicker until the next elections, but I fear Ghana might experience it soon.

Things are changing in Nigeria already.
The opposition has gained significant control of the HOR.
The tension in the Nigerian polity is because of the opposition influence.

Borrowing itself is not Bad, for instance with the huge infrastratural deficit in many african countries, it makes sense to borrow now to bridge the gap with the interet loans rather than go for loans to pay public service workers. Unfortunately, the loans have clauses which makes it compulsory to award about 60% of contracts to companies registered in the countries you are contracting the loans from.

@moshino, I am the one who wrote the piece about the Paliamentary system of government and not @CFc Fan, and Yes I still maintain that the parliamentary system is the best, I am not typing for the Heck of it.

The american people put the hope and destiny of the nation on one man, the man who won elections not by pedigree but off the back of strong cliches.....they have been disappointed. Forget the government sponsored propaganda [ReubeAbati has done better] , bt if you want to know where the blame truly lies, wait till the novermber 2014 mid-term elections. After the media chat, we all castigated poor GEJ for shifting blame cos he is the president of Naijeriya, i think Obama has rili played the blame game far worse. Lets put it squarely, OBAMA FAILED THIS TIME

BekeeBuAgbara: That's the implication of having the opposition in charge of any of the the two chambers of congress. (Even though there is no difference between PDP controlled House of Rep and the opposition.)

I think the shutdown would affect only non-essential workers.

I'm not particularly sure if this can snowball into a Global Crisis tho.. However I'l like build my CV as someone that's witnessed at least 2 Global Financial crisis in my life time..

Seven hundred thousand Non essential federal govt workers has been asked to sit at home without pay.. That's serious mehn!

These are the kind of news those crazy investment bankers on wall street newyork cash in on and make a fortune over night, people with insider information that congress was not come to a deal on raising the overal debt ceiling would stake everything they'v got against the Dollar..

Since everything and anything trades against the Dollar.. International price of Crude oil is In Dollar, Commodities are traded on standard dollar benchmarks worldwide.. Every single currency in the world has a standard rate of exchange against the Dollar, Stocks, Options, Futures, Indicies, Bonds, Gold, Crude Oil, commodities, Maize, Cocoa, Cassava, everything traded internationaly would be affected once the Dollar is affected..

Congress are making times real hard for my Man Obama..

October 1st 2013.. The Day Govt Shut Down..

Blame it on Dictator Hitler Barrack Obama.

KKK rally in Pennsylvania becomes
casualty of government shutdown

GH PATRIOT:
A Ku Klux Klan rally became a casualty of the U.S. government shutdown on Tuesday when National Parks officials told the white supremacist group the event would have to be canceled.
The KKK had been granted a permit for
what it dubbed a First Amendment
demonstration on Saturday at
Gettysburg National Military Park, but
park officials said it could not take place because all National Parks have been closed.
"Because of the federal government
shutdown, Gettysburg National Military
Park has rescinded all permits for special events, including the October 5 First Amendment demonstration," the park said in a statement.
Park officials had previously defended
the decision to allow the KKK event,
saying the group was entitled to the free speech protections afforded by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
"As custodians of land owned by the
American people, the National Park
Service has a responsibility to make the
land available for exercising those
rights," a statement from the parks said.
The KKK has long been associated with
hooded, white-robed night riders who
menaced blacks with cross burnings,
lynchings and other acts of violence.
The U.S. government shut down at
midnight when Congress was unable to
pass a budget for the new fiscal year
because of a standoff between President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans over healthcare reform. The
shutdown has furloughed hundreds of
thousands of federal workers and closed government facilities across the nation.

If this happened in 9ja the military would step in right away if you promise them pay or not.
They should tell the truth the dollar has been taking off the oil trade currency because of the massive debt, they are just sugar coating the real deal. Maybe soon people in Nigeria will be sending money to family in the USA and Nigeria will deny Americans Visa.
when the dollar is taking off the oil trade or better still when the petrodollar ceases to be world currency, the entire globe will go into a depression, the destruction of the dollar has many dire ramifications, u talking about naija people sending money to us,u need to do some economics, naija's economy would be worse than it is now,in fact naija becomes a fourth world, that day is gradually approaching, war will trigger the demise of the dollar to bring about the Amero and the New world order not One world order....we know the day is coming it is written all over the Scriptures, the question is are you prepared....dont forget that at the destruction of the dollar a revolution would arise...this is why we have Fema camps....

All members voting to shut down the United States Government should be impeached, and they should be looking a prison time for trying sabotage the United States Government. What is the difference between this and Al Qaeda blowing up Wall Street or hacking into the United States Banking Systems and destroying vital financial information? They all should be tried for Treason!

Ok, I had to google up what 'furlough' means after I entered this thread. That doesnt sound nice. However, will essential services mannned by federal workers still be functional? Though i know the US is not like Nigeria where the government owns everything.

They are not shutting down because of Obamacare. It has already been judged good by the supreme court and voted in by congress, and ordinary citizens are already signing up for it. Even McCain has admitted there is no way to stop this law. In fact if Obama tried to repeal it, there would be protests from lots of poor, indebted Americans (black and white) with medical conditions whose previous fate was to either die without access to necessary medicine (can you imagine that, in a trillion dollar economy) or wait for emergency room care which is usually too late. The ultimate issue is Obama is an uppitty black negro, and the Republicans want to ruin his legacy, even if they take the country down in the process.

There are lots of people whose world view has been shattered by the fact that a black man can rule over them. Lots of these people even claim to be christians, speak in tongues, etc. But apparently, even an erudite, professorial and calm black Obama is enough to bring the demons out. If there is anything good that can come of this, its that black men especially will wake up and smell the tea leaves. I can dream right undecided

Cap28, how are you?

Of course him and many other Nigerians who swear up and down the place that America is heaven on earth are gradually waking up to the reality that America is a sinking ship. You think that people like me who left America after over 13 years of residing there and coming back to Nigeria to get NYSC things out of the way are crazy? The signs are on the wall that America is living in her past glory. When I saw the staggering number of Americans who lost their homes, cars, etc due to increasing unemployment, I knew I had to get ready for plan B. When I saw my age peers who are either US-born or naturalized US citizens packing their bags and heading towards their countries of origin, I knew something was wrong and that America was a ticking time bomb.

This is why I was telling Nairalanders on another thread that they should not get upset about Nigeria no longer qualifying for DV-lottery because the truth of the matter is that USA is not the country it used to be when compared to when I got there in the late 90s. Americans are finding it very difficult finding jobs nowadays much less a fresh-off-the-boat immigrant. This should be a wake up call for Nigerians who think that America is the be all, end all.

I never swore that America was heaven on earth, I only put facts whenever a discussion came up. As for me packing my bags, it's my long term goal. I just don't know what to do when I come back, and no (please don't tell me I got to work, ain't no one gat time for that). Even some billionaires are renouncing their US citizenship. That's partly because of the new tax disclosure law that compels US citizens to pay tax to the FG, regardless of whether they live in the US or abroad.
