The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Kano State chapter has expressed shock over the news that the state government has employed over 100 doctors and nurses from Egypt to work in hospitals in the state.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Dr. Shehi Ali Abubakar, the association described the action as the highest form of insensitivity to the plight of doctors working under the government in particular and the condition of the health sector in general.

“While the government has been dragging its feet for the past two and a half years in meeting its contractual obligation to doctors salary under CONMESS, due to lack of funds, it suddenly has funds to employ foreign doctors,” he stated.

Dr. Abubakar expressed shock that a doctor in Kano with full knowledge of local diseases is of less value to the government and cannot be paid hundred per cent of his salary while an Egyptian doctor can be paid 6000 dollars monthly wages.

“We are now fully convinced that this government has no plan to tackle the issue of manpower shortage in the health sector and stop the current exodus of doctors from the state,” the statement said.

The association noted that the state government has failed to pay all the contract doctors under its employment the agreed 15 percent contract addition since its inception, although it is now ready to pay ten times that amount to Egyptian doctors.

It urged the government to rescind the decision for the sake of industrial harmony in the state health sector, and called on the medical and dental council to monitor the situation in view of many instances in the past where foreign health personnel who are not medically qualified have been employed to work as medical doctors

It is not a crime for Egyptian doctors to work in the Nigerian health care system but such doctors must pass through the same recruitment process that their Nigerian counterparts pass through. It is mark of unprecedented cluelessness for the Kano state govt to IMPORT doctors and give them preferential treatment. There's on difference between a Nigerian doctor and their foreign counterpart. If you expose the Nigerian doctor to the same training and facilities their foreign counterpart have, they'll perform even better. Again, the IMPORTED Egyptian doctors will be clueless as to the pattern of diseases in this environment.

If it is done to avert frequent medical trips abroad, i see nothing bad in it. Afterall virtually all the big men in Nigeria goes abroad for treatment.
Is this not better than GEJ that has sold our liberty to an Israeli firm ALBEIT INTERNATIONAL to spy on Nigerians internet users?
I sincerely pity for you on the kind of life you have chosen to live. May God Almighty do to you and your lineage what GEJ is doing to Nigeria. If you are going to reply me, please say a BIG AMEN to the prayer i have just done for you.

No my sister, it the hypocrisy of our nigerian leaders. If u were a doctor, u would understand our pain. These people are so incompetent as leaders so they feel if the cough we should jump. They forget we are professionals and we deal with people's lives.

Thought that you must do a compulsory one year posting in Nigeria before you will given a licence to practice in the country. What is MDCN, NMA and Federal Ministry of Health doing? Why do these poorly educated northern politicians love to bastardize the system? Well, he has given the resident doctors an alibi to embark on next strike. Let's see how many Egyptian doctors with $6000 monthly salary that he can hire. He needs to be taught a bitter lesson.
Maybe he is tired of Nigerian doctors who embark on incessant strikes thereby risking the lives of patients.
that is nt a right to employ Egyptian doctors when we are glaring fullface at unemployment. At times nigerians are easily inconsistent and often uncomposed and unmindful in any direction. Nigerians are shooting themselves in D leg. Wht is that state govt aim, if he has any 4 his state, that will determine wht steps he takes that facilitates such aims.

Does Kwankwaso not come from the same party as the chief clueless officer(GEJ). A party with a mishmash of nonentities, these are the kind of things you see and worse.
I urge you to go round all the APC states in the southwest and see what transformation is all about not GEJs joke.

Over 1000 doctors graduate from medical schools every session and we are here supporting employememt of Egyptian doctors because it is kwankwaso a northner. You all should cover your faces In shame.

They will be paying these Arabs in dollars while stalling over payments to local doctors in Naija.

I fear for their patients, they view Sub-saharans as lower on the food chain than horses and will be giving them equine medication

It is a democracy, people have freedom to say what they want. You have no right to judge anyone by your own standard. @Post, this story is one sided. The reporter never bordered to hear from the state government. What's wrong with interviewing the state commissioner of health before putting up this story? Based on this, I refuse to take sides in this matter as no good judgement can be made by listening to just one party.
