LEGISREPORTS NG – Access to bank accounts for illegal immigrants is to be restricted under new plans by the Home Office.

As part of Theresa May’s new Immigration Bill those who are ‘illegal’ or have overstayed their visa will be blocked from the banks, as the government issues sweeping new measures to reduce the number of people seeking residency in the country.

Banks will have to check a database of known immigration offenders before allowing accounts to be opened under the new rules.

A raft of new policies will be unveiled today which includes the requirement for private landlords to confirm the immigration status of their tenants.

Immigration is a key issue for the Conservative party, which has pledged to reduce net migration from non-EU countries to the ‘tens of thousands’ by the next election in 2015.

Other directives of the bill include the deportation of foreign criminals straight away before their appeal is heard, the need for temporary international students based in the UK to contribute towards the NHS and a continued ‘clamp down on people who try to gain an immigration advantage by entering into a sham marriage or civil partnership.’

Ministers are believed to have dropped, or at least suspended for now, a policy of asking GPs and hospitals to also check the immigration status of patients.


‘The Immigration Bill will stop migrants using public services to which they are not entitled, reduce the pull factors which encourage people to come to the UK and make it easier to remove people who should not be here,’ said immigration minister Mark Harper.

‘We will continue to welcome the brightest and best migrants who want to contribute to our economy and society and play by the rules. But the law must be on the side of people who respect it, not those who break it.’
