The ish is not the stress before/ during/ after the baby's arrival but the planning & preparations & decisions that may nid to be made for the new baby.......the lady may not be able to take some decisions on her own n a newborn @tyms has complications that require the physical presence of the man to provide some emotional & psychological support for the lady. wink

women can claim whatever they want from childbirth, but to claim that you are the only one that is affected by it, is where you losing the plot. Both men and women are affected by childbirth, some more than others depending on the family unit.

Maternity leave for men, let's c what an average naija men will do with that.

R we talking about one month plus or just few weeks. Let me assume its one month plus.

But come to think of it, how many naija men has that mentality of helping out when a new one is in d house. How many percentage?

When our tradition embraced mothers and what hv u + maids to help out, I still ask, what will they be doing at home for up to 3 months.
Bonding? I laugh in swahili.
A man can't just stay without engaging his mind fully else, all the agnes and gloria(s) in that vicinity will know that he is around!

I will love to c it o! Population explosion here we come!

(Just imagining hubby staying at home for one month doing nothing, is it possible? I don't think so.)

chaircover: . . .but these same Naija men you talk about are the same men you now see in ASDA buying baby milk and carrying their babies in slings while they watch over the older kids playing in the park and the same men who attend coffee afternoons/parent evenings at their kids school, which suggests to me that everyman has that family instinct in them, its just a case of teasing it out of them.

If us as women keep on telling them that they are incapable of doing it or give them a chance to to it then sure they wont bother.

There is nothing as wonderful as bonding with your baby and I feel really sorry for men who are not given that chance/refuse to do it. They are really missing a lot.
Men that want to bond with their newborn will def bond maternity leave or not.
What about traders? They shouldn't go to market again cos wifey put to bed.
A good man is always a good man and will always remain so.
In naija, we hv culture to thank.
I'm yet to c most men with that mentality. Until we can change the cultural perspective, I think that our men don't need it. Unless we don't want to say d truth.

Men do go for paternity leave in my establishment here in Nigeria, but the period is very short when compare to women's mat. Leave.

My dear its not only the new baby that needs the time with his/her dad.

How about the wife that has just put to bed. If your wife has had a difficult birth and with a CS and you have other toddlers to be looked after, will that trader still go and do a full 14 hours in the market? Cant that wait for a few days until wifey is strong enough? Not everyone has a relative on hand who can help with things at home.

If its outside naija, no problem but here where mama, papa, maid, whoever is always handy that initial time, I just don't get it.
Some pple don't hv anybody to help out I agree but still does it make some men to stay at home and do the necessary things? I don't think so. Meanwhile the law is not after them if they don't want to.
How I wish all the married ladies on nl will come out to say their hubby helped out during the first few months of child birth. When baby is mostly sleeping o.
What will they be doing actually?
Washing baby clothes and feeding baby?

A good man is always a good man and will always remain so. what has a good man got to do with paternity leave? bad mothers do get maternity leave, isn't it?

The paternity leave I am talking about is for the first 2 weeks.
In the first 2 weeks the baby is not always sleeping o! The baby is just eating eating eating and the mum is exhausted.
Dad can help by cooking a meal for his wife, Dad can help load the washing machine, dad can help to take the older kids to school . . . . . there are a lot of things that he can do during this period.

Ah what Mr Kadry went through those days, I comment my reserve lipsrsealed They deserve the leave I tell ya
Re: Should Men Get Paternity Leave? by Nobody: 4:30pm On Oct 13, 2013
Lol funny but traders are the ones that have the most time in their hands. So nothing wrong with them helping out
Re: Should Men Get Paternity Leave? by Nobody: 4:41pm On Oct 13, 2013
Me I'm confused o. Abeg which of a baby's needs are out of bounds for the father to perform? Is it feeding, diapering, rocking when crying? Which ones exactly? Because there is none I did not make my husband perform over and over and over again even from the beginning.

For me I see no valid reason why he should not do any of these so if I'm out of gas at 2 am and baby is up, the next step is to wake him up and say oya o, collect your child. There's breast milk in the fridge. And I go and rest. Is there supposed to be a big deal in this? And it's not only when I'm out of gas that I distribute his own fair share of the work to him.

Even developed countries know that parents need to bond with their kids. They were not stoopid or dumb when they decided to put in place a law of giving fathers paternity leave. They are not dumb by allowing men into labor rooms, Infact it is highly advised. tongue

CC did u say 2wks?
Oh! I rest my case.

Go back to my previous posts.
I'm talking about the naiaj factor!
They hardly do anything! Only few.
Is it not what I c every now and then?
So only 2 wks will make a man bond with his newbie?
Common! Bonding is for life!

And all these women saying no leave are the ones that will seriously pounce on their husbands during labor and yet you don't want the man to have 2 weeks to treat the bruises and injuries you inflicted on him by drinking Panadol 4 times a day.

This dude must be on the wrong thread.

As at the time he posted..chinwem = many women.. cheesy...these hyperactive men sha. cheesy

Anyway, I think they also deserve it because it is quite stressful staying up all night with the mother and child and then going to work the following morning. But I think it shouldn't exceed 2wEeks if one of the grandmas and\or any other help is around.

If a man is granted paternity leave at work and all he does at home is to play games, read news papers and drive round the neighboorhood, he should be flogged back to work, no point adding to the poor woman's stress.

I am an advocate of men taking paternity leave, but it should just be Fø̲̣̣я̅ some days or else it will outlive its usefulness cos some men will turn it into opportunity to engage in their hobby.Lolzzzz(An idle mind is the devil workshop). Even though we know men will not do much in the work,a little help goes a long way. Manly help will be required from time to time.Men should be part of the process, they should be able to fill in the gap by cooking, boiling water e.t.c ,so that the woman will not be too stressed out.

They would ALWAYS constitute MAJOR NUISANCEZZZZZ by picking unnecessary fights, make you SHOUT AND WEEP FOR MISTAKENLY BIRTHING ONE OF HIS TADPOLES/FROGS.

They will NEVER stay up to help you, but remind you how you wanna fake this and that to seek attention.

They will pass out on the couch before 8PM for sure!

THEY CAN'T EVEN RE-HEAT PIZZA SLICES! undecided
Shebi to be disturbing the poor wives with such useless questions such as "THE BLOOD DON DEY DRY SMALL-SMALL? NNE ABEG I WAN PHOCK! TIME DON REASSSSSH O!" grin

No be NIGERIAN LAZY, "INCONSIDERATE BAGGAZZZZ"?

Of what use are they but to be phocking up and down every street alley. . . . Pinching the b00bzzz of all pure-water sellers in the neighborhood? undecided

Mtcheeeeeew!!!

Does your husband do exactly what you described above? Mind you, not all men are that. We have responsible men and fathers...
