Unless your engine's really oily and filthy, I wouldn't steam clean it. But should you wish to go ahead, here are the main areas to avoid:

Distributor.
Coilpack.
HT leads.
Air intake.
Scuttle area (ECU lives there, and hates water).

I just got my wife this lovely Pontiac Aztek and this is exactly the question on my mind. I have never steam washed the engine bay of my Ford Explorer and not inclined towards washing the engine bay of this Pontiac either. But wifey being particular about such things, would love a clean engine bay.

Is there any safe way to wash the engine bay as against the massive flushing with water that is widely practiced in Nigeria?

Take it back to Cotonou where you bought it and ask them to steam wash it for you. Do not attempt to do it in 9ja ooo

Good job Siena, could you do a pictorial follow-up of the part mentioned for the sake of some learners like yours truly.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks.

@instinctg

The distributor and plug leads on old
cars are not a big deal as you can easily
dry them off
What is very important is to keep water
off the electronics. Now of course the
ECU and alarm electronics etc are in
water resistant boxes but unless you
have a radical land rover with all the
"wading" mods they are not really
waterproof and certainly not pressure
washer proof. So either cover the boxes
with lots of wires going into them with
plastic bags or don't play the hose onto
them. I usually spray the cleaner on all
round then cover the ECU box etc
because the grime will drip off without
pressure washing.

What gives you the idea that the vehicle was bought in Cotonou?

Vehicle is Lagos cleared, Autocheck certified history and qualifies for buyback protection (if that counts for anything).

Is that the only condition that calls for steaming the engine?

Come oh. Why is it that women suggest these crazy things and we pay the price. Better don't try it. My belief is that engine components should be cleaned piecemeal with the right materials and resembled. Any one who can't do that should not be in that business. Blast it with steam or water and you will regret it. I am.

Lol... she has not really asked yet (but only because I have not raised the hood for her to view!). Thank God tomorrow is a public holiday. Will spend the morning doing a piecemeal clean as against the machine wash... the engine is just merely dusty.
