Lagos To Use Cctv Units To Monitor Crime by bluehorizo(m): 1:01pm On Jul 03, 2008 |
The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said plans had been concluded to mount 10,000 Close Circuit Television units in strategic parts of the metropolis to curtail crime. This is a good development and the private sector should also support the Lagos State Govt by acquiring more CCTV to other extended areas. Eko o ni baje. |

bluehorizo: I dont think its a good development!!! instead he should tackle other things . . . Here is an example: if the cctv captures a hit and run by a crazy driver. . . i doubt there is any database which shows the current location where the car is registered to? BTW: what use will the cctv be when control centre no get light. . . |

Interesting and a welcomed development. Apart from pushing harder to get independent power station, Lagos state Government should also improve on its security to avoid vandalizing of these gadgets. A criminal may destroy any CCTV arround after or before commiting any crime but, with the presence of security officers, this won't be possible. Keep up the good work Lagos. We can do better than this and this is just the beginning. |

Very Good development. With the coming of the new ID card scheme project in December, creating a database for Nigerians, crime fighting will not be as hard as it is today. Also CCTV tends to deter people from committing crime in the first place. |

10000 CCTVs, very encouraging development. I just hope that the law enforcements agencies actually use this to aid in solving crimes. The only stifling factor is the power supply. Of course i don't see why such can't be solar powered if street lights can be. |

With the coming of the new ID card scheme project in Decemberanother 'new' ID card scheme? the problem with CCTV are they don't really prevent crime. Hopefully they can publish the criminals/offenders nationwide on TV or newspapers! |
Re: Lagos To Use Cctv Units To Monitor Crime by SkyBlue1: 4:00pm On Jul 03, 2008 |
@Dis Guy, i disagree. If the CCTVs are used to actually sucessfully prosecute criminals, who one earth would want to be commiting a crime in front of CCTVs? They have worked as a deterrent in quite a few countries. If CCTVs are places strategically in the central business district for instance, after a few weeks of well publicised busts by the police with the aid of CCTV and the word is out, who would want to go and take free photo when he is commiting a crime? |

Dis Guy: HAVEN'T YOU HEARD? New identity card management scheme to cost about N30 billion x | July 02, 2008 The new identity card management scheme, which is expected to start at the end of the year is to cost about N30 billion. The Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) said the money is to be used to upgrade the National Identity (ID) Card management scheme to an international standard and create a national identity database. He said the N30 billion is an estimate since the Commission has not considered the existing infrastructure inherited by NIMC and when the audit is completed; the total cost of the identity card scheme might be reduced. The previous identity card scheme cost about $215 million (N25 billion) and was handled by Sagem SA of France. The Director-General said: “Another infrastructure upgrade has to do with the creation of a secure National Identity Database with necessary authentication and verification infrastructure and full business continuity support so that it would be easy for anyone from anywhere within Nigeria to prove or assert his /her identity. “Accordingly, to achieve this objective, the Commission is focused on expanding, extending and enhancing existing identity infrastructure and where necessary exiting obsolete technology and processes in order to establish a reliable, secure and scalable identity management system infrastructure that utilises advanced biometric technologies to uniquely identify every individual in the country. “This strategy is what we have code- named 4Es through, which we ultimately hope to deliver in partnership with the private sector, a National ID Management System infrastructure upgrade that is consumer focused and sustainable,” |

This will also reduce the number (likely eliminate) innocents being punished for offences they never committed. |

HAVEN'T YOU HEARD? never heard of it, thought the old one never really go to people anyway “Accordingly, to achieve this objective, the Commission is focused on expanding, extending and enhancing existing identity infrastructure and where necessary exiting obsolete technology and processes in order to establish a reliable, secure and scalable identity management system infrastructure that utilises advanced biometric technologies to uniquely identify every individual in the country. Sky Blue: i agree they are used to prosecute criminals but haven't you heard of balaclavas? I think it will be very useful if they are used immediately to trace vehicles/vans involved in robberies at best they will reduce minor disorder; like traffic ffences, illegal car parking, refuse dumping etc if they are used at a local level-councils, wards and so on |

Dis Guy: Those highlighted from your posts are good starts at reducing crime/offences in the City. With time, other higher crimes will be under control but, it has start from somewhere |

won't be anything more than expenditure is it those illiterate policement that we are going to train in the use of all the hardware that comes with CCTV equipment? how can we ensure uninterrupted , clean power supply for the sensitive cctv equipment? how do we prevent arae boys etal from stealing the cameras? since the police are not state based, under whose control will the overall cctv cenres be? which isp is fast and reliable enough to support the remote connections that would be required? |

The last time i checked, the countries where these CCTV Cameras are effective all have 24 hrs uninterrupted power supply. Lagos Government should Tackle first thing first, which is power problem. That alone will go alone way reducing crime in the city and improve the effectiveness of the CCTV. Installing CCTV in a city with less than 12hrs light a day is a waste of resources to me. Not even in a country with intelligent and talented criminal as Nigeria. That is is why we are yearning for a true federalism where each state can have total control of their affairs, not jst on resources. I believe Fashola have a great vision for Lagos State, but he is being limited by the useless system of government we practice. A system that drags the whole nation into mud, even when many wanna get out of the mud they are being forced to remain there by the federal criminals. |

^^^ a CCTV can also be powered with solar. . . .the "light" factor shouldn't be a deterrent! |

Police001:So if you power the CCTV with solar how can it capture images in a dark environments or in street where is a total black out? |
Re: Lagos To Use Cctv Units To Monitor Crime by Police001: 8:39pm On Apr 23, 2010 |
princekevo: Many of the cameras are equipped with night vision and Infrared that makes it possible to capture images in dark enviroments |
Re: Lagos To Use Cctv Units To Monitor Crime by DisGuy: 10:27pm On Apr 23, 2010 |
