Fashola: Nigeria Must Punish Those Behind Aviation Woes by gratiaeo(m): 6:38am On Oct 15, 2013 |
Kazeem Ugbodaga Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, western Nigeria, has called on the Federal Government to mete out appropriate punishment on all those behind the numerous woes being experienced in the aviation sector. The nation’s aviation sector has in recent time come under serious problem and national embarrassment, with the Associated Airline that crashed early this month, and two other planes in near mishap in less than two weeks. Fashola, who received the Air Officer Commanding, Logistic Command, Nigerian Air Force, Ikeja, Air Vice Marshal Monday Morgan on a courtesy visit at the State House, Ikeja, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Monday said it was by meting out appropriate punishment on those who compromised standards in the Aviation industry that the problems in the sector could be curbed. “It is no secret that a section of our national life which you are concerned with the military part of it, the aviation industry is under public scrutiny now, which is safety in the sky. I want to use this medium to appeal to you and your colleagues in the aviation sector, that what is needed to be done in order to improve upon safety in that area must be done. “We must never think twice about it. It makes our job easy. This is because we have responsibility for safety of life and property in the state. But it isn’t only safety that is induced by terror and crime. We cannot secure life and property if certain safety standards aren’t kept,” he explained. “It adds to the index of the causalities that we may have to deal with. There must be uncompromising standards about ensuring safety whether on the side of the military or aviation. Everybody must work together to make the Nigerian Aviation industry safer so that when people board aircraft from the country, they must feel confident that nothing unusual will happen,” he added. The governor explained that everyone knew that aircraft were mechanical devices that could fail, stressing that there is a protocol for keeping mechanical devices operational and functional. “And all those in the aviation industry know what all these protocols are about. And if people drop the ball in those areas, there must be nothing fitting and proper than the extreme punishment in order to demonstrate the value that we put on the life of every Nigerian. That is the only way we can ensure that people who are entrusted with other people’s life will treat those lives with the same level of care, as they will treat their own,” he stated. Morgan commended Fashola on his effort to improve the security situation in the state, stressing that the governor’s aggression and youthfulness had brought positively progress in the development of the state. “It gives me a lot of hope that Nigeria is benefitting from the wealth of experience of the youth. Your common contribution to the security agencies in the state has helped to boost the morale of the security officers and I want to assure you today that we will always be available to render our service to the state whenever we are called upon,” he stated. He stated that the Air Force would like to be part of developmental trend while appealing to the governor to extend his hand of friendship to structures that were begging for redevelopment within the base as the military budget could not cover all the expenses. http://kaaf.com/2013/10/Fashola-Nigeria-must-punish-those-behind-aviation-woes-453813 |

We need to give attention to every sector and not just being concerned about the aviation woes. The State and Federal Govt should give great concern to the roads and not just think of the woes in the aviation sector alone. Lagos/Badagry, Lagos/Ibadan expressway, Benin/Ore road, infact all the federal and state roads should be given great attention. It is sad that people loose their lives daily on our roads. Not much attention is being given to this area that millions of people travel on. Just as I am concern about the aviation sector, I am much more concerned about the safety on the roads. Our leaders should wake up to their responsibilities and give attention to the Nigeria roads that have suddenly become death traps. I pray that the Lord will touch the hearts of our leaders and not just being concerned about their selfish ambition while lives are perishing. |

Fashola got too much siliva to spare! Apart from the fact that some people will see the statement as ethnicity-laced, others will see him as attacking jonamad's administration! And if u ae waiting for jonacrazy to sack his mistress at the aviation sector, u are wasting ur time! its just like diezani, like NOI!!! 1 Like |

This is just mere talk and rectorics. We know them. They haven't shown any seriousness in punishing the people responsible for the woes in the Aviation sector in particular and the nation in general. |

For those waiting for the minister to be axed.Peleoo that would never happen at least not now. |

There is nothing to feel sorry about. Your people are bunch of crazy tricky tribal-ists. Why always Diezani, NOI, Stella Odua and other Igbo public holders that are always scrutinised while shading your regional compatriots. FKK publicly told Nigerians how he masterminded the invasion (in the name of employment) of every aspect of Aviation departments with Yorubas while in office for only six months. The question is, why are there no article reprimanding him? Probably, it's not a cause for concern as Yorubas are right to do it. Hypocrites. Fashola i’m surprised that you know about mechanical device going faulty. If you know that mechanical devices can go faulty, then those second handed trains you bought from Canada would soon fail, just like the Canadians who sold it to you know this, and that’s why they sold it to you fast. The result of those failed mechanical devices caused by those airline is very simple, those planes are all old and should no longer be in service. But when our leaders choose to use Nigeria as a dumping ground for outdated transportation facilities such as planes, trains and vehicles that are no longer supposed to be used to transport human beings for safety of lives. Then what we get is complete chaos and loss of innocent lives. Btw; Lagos - Badagry express road is now worser than aviation industry it self. People are suffering/dying there everyday because of your negligence. Are we not suppose to punish those responsible for the bad state of our roads also? 1 Like |

Anybody that travels well on local flights can testify to the bad state most of these planes that fly these routes are. The flaps of the crashed AA plane didn't deploy properly.......Of course, the chances of this happening is higher in an old plane. If the flaps deployed properly, no one would have screamed "Abort flight". Anyone that sees nothing wrong in the sorry state of most planes allowed to operate in the local routes simply doesn't travel by air within this country. DANA Air that crashed last year can even be said to have some of the best planes and services so think of how bad the rest would be. Someone/ People permitted these airlines to operate those old planes in the Nigerian Airspace, that person/ people have names and they deserve to be sacked. Crashes occur worldwide but compared to the percentage of flights that the Nigerian Airspace handles, its way too much. Its unacceptable. 1 Like |

blacksta:Its like blaming the driver in a car crash caused by a worn out tire that burst while the car was at speed. The front seat passenger screams "don't press the breaks"!!!! But the driver does....leading to the accident. Would the tire have burst if it was new?? The chances of that happening would have been greatly reduced.....And they ignored the rickety old plane with the faulty flap and blame the pilot for trying to "Manage" it. Same thing that keeps going on in our Aviation sector. You walk past the refurbished Airports to board those rickety planes that can crash anytime. 2 Likes |

Nobody is talking about sister hood here. We are talking about rot in the aviation industry that just like Nepa, was perpetuated by ur sisters and brothers. Allow somebody else time to correct these things, u want to use petitions to distract her. Well, there is news for u, the person in charge is not one of ur masters that would have done it as a favour for his slaves. Quit crying and sabotaging, nobody cares anymore. |

Fashola is right. Our institutions should start taking responsibilities for the recent air mishap, NCAA should take responsibility and Fola Akin should resign immediately. All those Ife people that Femi Fani Kayode employed during his tenure should all be sacked. We should start doing the right thing in this country. And why is the Lagos/ibadan press cabal silent over the fact that Femi Fani Kayode employed unqualified people from his home state into our Aviation sector? Stella Oduah should as a matter of national importance put these people through rigorous tests to ascertain how qualified they are and those found not capable enough should be sacked immediately. 1 Like |

I don't want to believe that Fashola is targeting the minister, minister is not the owner of the airplanes, minister is also not the pilots and minister is not the one of the safety officers. The ministers job is safe because she has done well in the aviation sector, if there is need for sack,I think the junior or senior staff that are in the safety unit should all bear the weight of the hammer. You don't sack the school principal because of mathematics teacher's inability to control his class. |

Please tell the minister that they should also try repainting planes as well. It may automatically fix all underlying aviation issues. |

It amazed why nobody is talking about accidents on our roads, i remember vividly last year when over 130 people perished on Benin- ore road, why did people not calling for minister of transportation head ^^^ No fewer than 110 people died yesterday in multiple accidents on Benin-Lagos expressway and Onitsha-Owerri expressway. This is coming barely one week after 18 persons perished in an auto crash on Lokoja-Abuja road. In the Benin-Lagos http://attorneyspringfieldmo.com/?p=1481 |

Oga Fashola, you said exactly what is in my Mind.Fashola is not saying the Minister should be sack, there are people in charge whose job is to ensure that crash don't happen.Engineers and Aiport officials who cut corners. This are the main culprit and should be sacked and jailed. @ Oga Fashola, those responsible for fixing Lagos Roads, drainages and other public infrastractures in Lagos should also be punished. 1 Like |
