It's not only the Hausas that have sold their tradition names to Arabs in the North, the Kanuris, Fulanis, Nupes, Igbiras, Jukuns, mumuyis, Igalas and Gwaris are as guilty as charged. That been said, I think the Fulanis, Kanuris and Igalas still bear their traditiional names such as yaguda, mauzu, fateh, bamanga, Atiku, yaradua, Aliko, Nyako, Lamido, Lamorde, Suntai, Ado, Wanka, Lamis, Dikko, Danlami, Tanko, Maccido, Gambari, Shekarau, Shekau et.c while Kanuris bears name like, Ciroma, Ndume, Zanna, Abacha, Biu, Bunu et.c where as Igalas bear Attai, Idoko, Ochalifu, Ochoche, Audu, Wada, Aidoko, Ameh et.c. Though Hausa still have traditional names like Kwankwaso, Dakata, Maigatarkada, Wamako, Dangote, Yero, Markarfi, Jega, Karaye, Tofa, Manzo, Babangida, Buhari, Dasuki, Galadanci, Haladu, Auwalu, Murtala, Lere, Samaila, Barkindo, Dakingari, Danjuma, Goje, Tafida, Dalhatu, Rimi, Fagge, Sabo, Dabo, Tijjani, et.c

abatisegun: Yes, from the word sheik: meaning a learned person or old.
Sorry the question was "Is it an Arabic NAME"
Goodluck might be an English word but it is NOT an Engish Name. I don't know any English people with that name also "Government" is an English word but I am not aware of any English people with that name either. Ditto for Sunday,Saturday,Friday Monday etc

In my opinion Shehu is NOT an Arabic "NAME" though it may have origins in the Arabic language

joker5180: or u dnt knw the meaning of most of those names. pls ask around for meaning of any hausa name nd u wil get it
I think what he meant was that u don't use most of the names in everyday speech the way you would use 'Oluwaseun' for example. It is not only Hausa, most languages in the world are like that. For instance Smith is an English which has a meaning, but u can't slot it into a sentence in speech without referring to a person the way you would say 'Oluwaseun' without calling anybody's name.

Sheikh is a masculine name of Arabic origin and is derived from the Arabic honorary term referring to a ‘Scholar’ or teacher. It is traditionally given to the leader of a tribe, or a person considered a wise man. Muslims use the word to refer to a man over the age of 50. All of this would suggest that it is rarely used as a first name.

Lots of people named Sheikh

Lateef9961: Yes nw.
Sum names lyk babangida,aliero,tani,hussaini,dangote,buhari,kashim,yero,magatakaruda,dakingari e.t.c

Mark you , buhari is a soviet name gotten from anyone who hailed from bukhara in the old muslim empire (now in present day russia). A learned islamic scholar from bukhara who as named 'bukhari' (aldultrated as buhari) is the source of this name in islamic history.
Hussain was one of the sons of Ali, who was the son of our noble prophet (Muhammad S.A.W) an arab.
I guess you should do more esearch as the names above do not have their origins from Nigeria let alone the northen part.
Peace. ...!!!!

Muslims bear names of Prophets like Jonah(Yunus) Joseph(Yusuf) Job(Ayub) e.t.c they also bear names of Angels like Jibril(Gabriel) Mika'il(Micheal) e.t.c

Ghadafy: @OP, yes of course SHEKAU is not a Muslim name but Hausa native name.

Shekau is not a Hausa name. Shekarau is actually a Hausa name - perhaps you are confusing the 2.
Re: Do Muslims from Northern Nigeria have native names? by Lakayanah: 9:54pm On Oct 16, 2013
The real Hausa names will soon be extinct because it is no longer fashionable to name your child with a native Hausa name that is for the Muslims hausas. But for the other Muslim northerners they still give native names. I hope people will start looking for their roots for a tree without a root will definitely die.

Oga cool down and dont spread ignorance to people.
If you arent sure just be humble and avaoid spreading false information.

Jamila...meaning nice one or good person in arabic.

Sani or thani...meaning second usually either a second born spn to a first child (male usually) or a person close to whom in wish or hope to a mentor in arabic culture.

Khamis ....fifth (same as that in hamis spelt as khamis)

Bashir...meaning good or bishir 'positive,, refreshing' in Arabic.

Sale, yusuf....oga , madam, chairman....this one is impeachable. These are pure arabic names foumd in Arab literature centuries before the northern or hausa languages were formed....

Please retract your post as it is highly misleading. ...

Re: Do Muslims from Northern Nigeria have native names? by bola09: 10:41pm On Oct 16, 2013
I thought the question should be; Why do Hausa, Kanuri, Ibo, Ibibio, Efik, Yoruba and all other Nigerian ethnicities after swallowing foreign religion line hook and sinker in addition consider it a necessity that they must also bear foreign names. I understand the inferiority complex associated with jettison of one's religion and taking up of another one but must we abandon all that was ours? Also, I will think with the benefit of hindsight, it should be apparent to the intellectual elites that we must be proactive to preserve our cultures but alas, they are often the one at the vanguard of destroying it. Something is fundamentally wrong with our ethos

Nonybb: My points are clear and specific. Any confusion u guys have with names shouldnt be to the classification of the entire Northern region. I knw some ppl/igbos that fled to Northern part of this country few years after Nigerian-Biafran war, so they remained but there religion undeniably were christianity and this question is not to them. I have never seen with my eyes any Igbo full blooded indigene that could proudly profess islam as his religion if not for in disguise of his poor conditions to obtain favour frm a big alhaji. We are igbo and we are for jesus, it is not negotiable and any suggestion otherwise is vehemently resisted. I am not a fanatics but i strongly believe igbos naturally, or by providence are not meant to practice islam. The missionaries would collected when they came. It was a sign of peace and we yielded. We werent caught up in jihad or threat to join.

If I didn't know better, I could have sworn Jesus was an Igbo man by what you typed above.

Anyways, Igbos being predominantly Christians have more to do with their historically not having too much contact with people of other faiths rather than any predestined design as you will have us believe. Christianity or Islam for that matter, is not the bithright of any Nigerian tribe. Our forefathers have their own religion and its sure as hell not Christianity or Islam.

Ghadafy: @OP, yes of course SHEKAU is not a Muslim name but Hausa native name.

Dumb head, SHEKAU is not even HAUSA, he's KANURI, a major tribe in Maiduguri.

Shekau only appears in media speaking Hausa because everyone who understands Kanuri understands Hausa as wekl (but not vice versa). Hausa is also a language that majority of Nigerians understand.
