KICC creeps me out. No, there’s no clever wordplay here, no hidden meaning. The Kingsway International Christian Centre creeps me out. I don’t mean ‘creeps me out’ in the I-wouldn’t-be-caught-dead-within-a-mile-of-it way I would refer to say, TB Joshua’s ‘Synagogue’. But an experience there has left me deeply uncomfortable till today.

I had the distinct fortune of being invited to the church by my aunt with whom I was staying some weeks ago. Of course my natural reaction would have been to say no, but to avoid having to explain to them that I wasn’t exactly a churchgoer because I didn’t exactly believe in God would have resulted in a long discussion and most likely an attempt to preach to me and ‘save my soul’ which I honestly did not have the strength to endure. So yeah, simply going to church seemed like the easier option. The sermon was like many others so I’ll spare you any long details.

Now at this point in my life I have pretty much come to terms with the fact that churches are businesses; how could they not be? Building branches everywhere and organizing revivals and camps and what not takes a lot of money, which has to come from somewhere, right? However, there is something deeply upsetting about a “man of God” telling members of his congregation that the amount of blessings they will receive is directly proportional to how much money they put in envelopes being handed out in church; which was exactly what happened at KICC.

The service was winding down and apparently because it was the first service of the month, tithes had to be given, after which offerings would be collected, as well. No big deal, right? Except for the fact the pastor’s idea of motivating people was to tell them that the amount of money they gave would determine how much they would gain. The exact quote was, and I wrote it down, so as to never forget, “tithe opens up the floodgates, offering determines what will come out.”

This is not a personal attack on KICC. I’m sure similar things are said in churches every day. I’ve heard allusions to similar statements in churches I’ve visited over the years, but never have I ever heard it put in such a blatant manner. “Offering determines what will come out?” Really? Are people in church to worship someone they consider a supreme being, or play the lottery?

It can, perhaps, all be blamed on people who are gullible enough to eat up the words of their pastors and ‘fathers’ week after week and do exactly as they say. But there is something terribly upsetting about pastors who see their positions of power as opportunities to play on people’s desperation for ‘blessings’ by telling them that it is somehow related to how much money they give the church.

If you're not a christian why should it bother you? If you had asked questions , he would have explained himself based on his scriptural knowledge. And If you feel the man is wrong you should use scriptural knowledge to disprove it.

Inappropriate comparison.
Rich dad poor dad does not ask you to give money to someone for supernatural blessings.

Yes, pentecostal fraudsters use motivational techniques and vocabulary, but they work primarily fear and blackmail as their primary currencies.

In a away the pastor is right but I am not sure of the motive or sincerity behind the statement

What was noticed and commented on by Jesus about those putting into the treasury or making offering?

Who was blessed and who was lambasted?

Who was said to have put in more?

Was it the poor widow with her two mites or the rich putting their gifts?

You think, all, pastors inclusive, are casting in to the offering box all they have to live on? (i.e. everything)

That'll be the day!

To a large extent I agree with the OP, I actually get irritated anytime I see ashimolowo on TV. The man is a pure hustler and the way he goes about twisting scripture to extort money from his members is so crude. He even invents his own 'scriptures' ti promote his racket. Asshimolowo is a big disgrace to the christian faith.

The wife of Ash was invited to my church for a programme one time at Dunamis Abuja. After preaching, she told pple to tap into the blessing of what she preached by coming out to give offering and the bigger the offering the bigger the blessing.
Pple were very reluctant to go and drop money at the alter, very few went anyway.
As she made her dramatic exit with her pple, the owner of the church quickly apologised to the congregation and then cleared the air.
I saw d humiliation in her face when few responded to her call. I trust d owner, she will be warned not to try that again.
Me too was just mooping at her.
What a very myopic way to rob pple!

Is this different from the sale of indulgence that Martin Luther Protested against? Unfortunately His followers are today selling more indulgences than the Popes of yore did.

rich dad poor dad teaches the same principle of giving to receive that is in the bible.
As for promising spiritual blessgs, he cant since he doesnt manifestly believe in God.

Ashimolowo knows the reason why he left the UK. Of course, his next port of call would be Nigeria(country of religious mugus), since most people living there have been completely brainwashed by their respective pastors/rev.

Fact is the bible addresses every area of a christians life including giving. The principles a christian has to employ to see results - financially and materially but
the unbelieving world who want nothing to do with God will focus on any message on giving to criticize and distort.
Money is always on peoples minds , always. People always want more, always. Som body writes a book like kiyosaki did and it tops the chart! But a preacher says giv and he's suddenly a rogue - no christian's will take note.
But the bible says 1.) the wealth of the world belongs to God,
so y cant his children help themselves to som of it?
How many christian billonaires are they?
How many porn star , gambling billonaires are they?
Yes, some christian ministers get dubious and try to line their pockets, som of them literally lack content and only know how to preach a popular message but
tht doesnt mean labelling all preachers as rogues cuz they preach prosperity.
Y shudnt a pastor drive a flashy car? Live in a nice house? Etc
actually on d prosperity scale, the bible says it is NOT UP TO GOD to determine how rich a christian can be! Hello? Its up to the christian. How?
Let me use the share analogy.
If u buy 1000 units of shares , ur dividend wont come immediately but in a few months time,
it will come and it will b proportional to how much you
invested always. What if you bought 1 million units? In 10 years time your shares could hav doubled from the company giving bonus shares , so u cud b worth 20 million units. Dividend on those 20 million units cud run into 100 million (whatever currency its denominated in). Wud then blame the share holder for owning too many shares?
God has set things up so that , the christian determines how much he wishes to sow while God works out the increase? So those going to put n10 in offering will reap multiples of N10 (of course this is all relative) but the thing is most pastors look to d members of their congregation 4 sustenance and so preach a manipulative and compromised message. This doesnt do away with the spiritual laws regarding giving as specified in d bible.

Giving and receiving is a principle. If a man give to God ,he is not at a loss. We live by our giving. Jesus taught on giving ,likewise Paul.

Hello, you are talking business and not bible please, which unfortunately have plunged the church worldwide into commercial centres and avenues, instead of being a prayer and salvation centres, where truth and obedience are taught.
God will definitely judge the churches of this generation.

Asshimolowo's wife was stated to have asked people to pay for blessings and you in good conscience as a pastor finds nothing wrong with her statement which is not only pure heresy but also a ridicule on the christian faith and you have the temerity to defend her acts of fraudulent manipulation. And to answer your hypocritical question, I am certain you know that Mrs Asshimolowo would get a cut out of whatever offerings was collected based on her preaching in addition to her honorarium. You cannot pretend not to know of this racket in pentecostal speaking circuits of which I know you belong.

What is new.

That's why people flock in droves to these so called places of worship every Sunday to play the 'lottery' , while the crooks and charlatans laugh their way to the bank.

smh.

It would have been better if only you know that God is not interested on how fat our envelopes appear during giving but, on our obedience to His word as it relates to giving. How about that?

Investing money, time and effort to achieve a desired result is far far from giving with the hope of receiving.
If you pay for the know-how of prudent planning, prudent investing and prudent time management, that should not be conflated with your dubious principle of giving invisible skydaddy and hoping to receive.

I guess , this is where education and enlightenment come in.
This is also the difference between civilised societies and primitive societies.
This is also why we are so poor in the midst of abundant resources.
This is might also explain why we export crude oil and import petrol, Why we export raw cocoa and import chocolate.
Etc etc.
Dwell on it.
