It was an event that sent shock ripples across the Country and reverberated around the world. On that ill-fated Sunday morning this day 27 years ago, a journalist of the finest breed and craft was gruesomely extinguished via a parcel bomb. Questions have been repeatedly asked, fingers pointed, muted accusations made, yet decades after a crime so heinous in execution that it would shock the present era that is rocked with terrorism, and so expert and meticulous in execution not normally seen, no culprit has been brought to book to answer for the crime. As much as that was the case, it remains a huge blotch on the judiciary, casting a pall of doubt over its credibility.
Among the many theories that were alluded to as the reason behind his murder, the one that has stuck is that of Gloria Okon. According to the reports, Gloria Okon was a drug courier who was apprehended at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in possession of some narcotics. Later, another report was released indicating that Ms. Gloria Okon, who it was alleged, was working under the employ of the late wife of former President Ibrahim Babangida, Maryam Babangida, had died in custody. However Giwa tracked the afore-mentioned suspect to London and interviewed her where she spilled the beans. Armed with such explosive information, he was raring to return and make the news public via Newswatch.
Knowing the implication of making the interview public knowledge, the State made surreptious moves to prevent the news from being published. Despite their best efforts, the fiery journalist was not ready to do their bidding. So he was subsequently liquidated in that dastardly manner.
The State at that time, however, did nothing to assuage the rumours swirling across the land that it had a hand in the demise of the ace journalist.
A report by Justice Chukwudifu Oputa indicting the retired General has inexplicably not been released since its compilation despite a clamour to that effect by civil and human rights groups. No matter the theories propounded by conspiracy theorists as to the motive of his killers, the fact remains that the fearless journalists had access to some damning information which his killers feared he would divulge in his highly influential media platform.
Purists of the writing craft maintain that robust journalism died with the man on that fateful day in 1986. Giwa was fearless, as he was a brilliant journalist. He was a man who integrity was second nature to. He managed to build Newswatch magazine into a top notch publication whose readers were left drooling at the quality of journalism they were served in every edition of the magazine. As the conspiracy theories continue to swirl, the crime would remain classified in the archives of whodunit with cases like the assassination of President J. F. Kennedy as one that has remained insoluble.
