One last wish!
Prologue
It was a day not to forget. Rain drops peltered away in the city of Lagos making the city look like a flooded Atlantic Ocean! What an irony! The rain had not given any premonition of coming down in torrents. The sun was blistering in the afternoon. If you had washed a jean trouser by 2pm and spread it,it would have been dry by 3 30. That was the magnitude of the rain. Around 5,the clouds darkened and the breeze just started blowing ferociously. Market women were scampering to prevent the rain from destroying their wares. And drivers started winding up their glasses and switching on their car wipers. The streets were deserted. The date was 24th,April,1987.
Meanwhile in obalende,a suburb on the mainland,midwives were battling to save a young girl's life. "Push now",an exasperated midwife said. This labour was becoming too protracted."Mama,I'm trying",the girl said amidst weak sobs. She pushed and pushed until she could bear it no more. "please,let me die". "Don't say that,just try". The head midwife knew that she won't survive. At long last,she gave birth to a bouncing baby girl. "Weeeehn,weeehn". The unmistakable cry of a new born baby filled the room. The girl held her baby and said,"this will be my last wish because I'm about to die"
