The Ghana Grudge(ghana Vs Nigeria) by RoyalPearl(f): 12:43pm On Oct 24, 2013
Historically, these two nations clashed due to Government implementation of extreme immigration laws that were set in bids to improve the economy. At the time these extreme measures put a strain on the relationship of the two countries.

Fast forward to 2013.....MyGhanaRoots & Narrow Path Films have done some investigating through a series of interviews with people from both of these great West African nations.

The interviews aim to discover if these historical events have remained in the history books or, have Ghanaians and Nigerians continued to bear a grudge towards each other?

Very interesting. A must watch

Great video. Anything Ghana vs Nigeria is always funny and interesting. This was very true esp the Banter part(Ghana must go, 419 etc) as well as describing a typical Ghanaian and Nigerian.

Interesting video. It says it all lol and loved what the guy said, both Ghanaian and Nigerians are very proud people, proud of their identity, history, culture and love any excuse to poke fun at each other and there is no real animosity, it's just a friendly rivalry at least in our generation.

I believe NG-GH hatred/rivalry starts and ends online. Out in the real world, away from home and in foreign lands, NG-GH see themselves as one.

One love! Repping NG by day, GH by night. cheesy

You don't me well. It isn't about the video. There have been many instants where Ghanians and Nigerians clash on this forum over meaningless issues. The video wasn't dissing. What I mean is,instead of we constantly clashing among ourselves,we should think of positive things about each other. smiley

I personally have nothing against Ghanaians and view them as Nigeria's brother/sister nation. In fact, I view all West African nations and African nations in general as great. Why must there be conflict amongst countries that are not too far apart?

Correction, only a select few people can not get along. Every Ghanaian I have come across I have gotten along with them just fine. It is both countries leadership that need reality checks. If our leaders do not want both nations to get along, then the leaders need to be replaced.
Re: The Ghana Grudge(ghana Vs Nigeria) by Nobody: 8:30pm On Oct 24, 2013
I didn't even know Jollof rice was also one of the rivalries, lol. A Senegambian dish? Lol. Growing up it was football. My Ghanaian teachers vs my Nigerian teachers. Lol. So jollof rice has joined? Lol.
At the end, it's just banter.

But why are we tagged loud and aggressive as Nigerians? I know the northerners are naturally reserved, but Southern groups, Chineke God! grin

You're effin wrong we look nothin like them! and we don't pronounce cut like cat all in the name of Oral english. I don't think you're Nigerian.

Did I see someone write that we're proud people just like the guy said it's more of pride. By now other countries should know you cant keep throwing jabs at us and expect the individuals not to respond, even if the government just mope.

A friend in schooling in Ghana told me how they treat them atimes even their Lecturers. The P is dat most of them always have it in mind that every Nigerian wants to pick up somethin wiv'em and that we had somethin to do with the Ghana must go Shi. What they dont know is thay they pulled the hatred card first, we just showed them how to play it when we retaliated in Gowon's era.

And this video is based on foreigners with African descent, none of them sound close to what a GHanian or Nigerian would will sound like. So what they are exposed to is the friendly parts of the banter, I wish that's all I knew too. but most of us know that there's more to it than just Bantering.

But I think the P will reduce overtime with the new generation.

Lol i agree with the accent part, we do not sound alike. Your views are based on a lot of generalisations. From both sides the will be people who actually have a dislike for Ghanaians or Nigerians and have their own story to tell but i believe for the most part it's just banter. It's not like Ghanaians go around killing Nigerians and vice versa.

I deliberately reserved my comments for chauvinist dudes like you. In 1969, Ghana enacted the Aliens Compliance Order, in which hundreds of thousands of immigrants, mostly Nigerian, were expelled from the country. In 1983, Nigeria introduced the Expulsion Order, in which about the government ordered over 2 million immigrants to leave, most of which were Ghanaian »»» read more ««« if my memory serves me right it was the Buhari era which retaliated and not Gowon.

The average Ghanaian by nature is very conservative and welcoming and wants to earn a honest living(because of that we are labelled lazy), as such will not tolerate it when foreigners steal, kill them at will in their territory. In the late 90's Ghana experienced waves of criminal activites and about 90% of those caught were nigerians and because of that the seed of mistrust was planted.
The only issue I have with my compatriots is when they paint all nigerians with the same brush.
Under former Ghanaian president Kofi Busia’s Aliens Compliance Order of 1969, Nigerians and other immigrants were forced to leave Ghana. The order required of all foreigners in the country to be in
possession of residence permit if they did not already have it or to obtain it within a two-week period.
The order angered some West African governments, especially Nigeria, Togo,
Benin, Mali, Niger, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso whose citizens were mostly affected by the expulsion
. ««« So wherein lies the claim that it was targeted at nigerians?

Pre-colonial
Ethnically Nigerians and Ghanaians
share a lot, most Ghanaians tribes
migrated from Nigeria due to being
pushed out by groups in Nigeria who
were closely related. Some groups also
migrated from Ghana to Nigeria such as the Ogoni people. People who ignore
this fact, do it out of ignorance but
sometimes due to an inferiority complex.
Most Ghanaian groups are of Benin or
Kwarafara origins. It is time silly
rivalries be put aside. Yes Portuguese
brought groups from all over Africa to
trade for gold however without these
groups Asante would never have
become the kingdom it was nor would
the Akan groups have prospered
agriculturally. I am sure Osei Tutu was
probably from Igbo land. Our histories
are entwined. Hausa traders historically
came From Northern Nigeria to trade
for Gold and Kola nuts with the Akan
people . The Portuguese also supplied
the Akan of Ghana with numerous
enslaved people from modern day
Nigeria in the early 1500s.[1]

"a great number of slaves who were
bartered very profitably at El Mina.
The labor of these slaves enabled the
Akan to expand gold production by
developing deep-level mining in
addition to panning alluvial soils.
Even more importantly, slave labor
enabled the Akan to undertake the
immensely laborious task of clearing
the dense forests of southern Ghana
for farming

This helped the Akan who were
previously hunter-gathers and Farmers
become larger scale farmers.
Colonial
During the Colonial era descendants of
enslaved Nigerian Hausa's were brought
to the then Gold Coast to fight under the
British Flag for British Interests. They
were called Glover Hausas and partly
set the foundations of the Gold Coasts
Colonial Army.
Post-Colonial
Many Nigerians began moving to Ghana
after Ghana became the first
independent country in the region in
1957. Also in the 70s many Ghanaians
moved to Nigeria as economic refugees
The relationship became sour when the
flow began to shift the demographics of
the country and the people became
unhappy. Thus, under former Ghanaian
president Busia's Aliens Compliance
Order of 1969 Nigerians and other
immigrants were forced to leave Ghana
as they made up 20 percent of Ghana's
population at the time.[3] In 1983,
Nigeria deported up to 1 million
Ghanaian and other African immigrants
when Ghana was facing severe drought
and economic problems, and another
300,000 in early 1985 on short notice.
This further strained relations between
the two countries.

^^^ thanks for clearing that. about me being Chauvnistic i think its a feeling every citizen should have because it helps in eliminating the inferiority complex in some peolpe. About the Alien compliance stuff, we both know that call affected Nigerians more than any other immigrant as at that time. What i've deduced from the little provided is that it's was 'tit for tat' game which one side hard to take the punch harder.

I grew up having Ghanian teachers in my school, and there was this Ghanian 'mama put' then in my area, there was a guy then that hated theives like crazy, the way the guy would hunt down thieves you would think he was paid to do it. I didn't understand why the guy would do that untill i grew up to understand the story btw Nigeria and Ghana.

To be honest I believe its mostly friendly banter and rivarly. I won't lie I have been part of the 'e-war' sometimes but it was more of catching fun and playing around.

I do not hate any Ghanaian in real life and I think I am sure same can be said for Ghanaians at least here in the USA as we get along with each other.

Ghanaians and Nigerians are like Jamaicans and Trinidadians. Always issues between them. Not surprised at all because according to history, most Jamaicans are from Ghana while most Trinis are from Nigeria.

On a serious note,I think the problem is rivalry. Both nigerians & ghanaians have a "I am better than you" mentality towards each other.
Being two of the most dominant countries in West Africa, they're always at each others throats

Same can be said about South Africa and Zimbabwe, Kenya and Somali etc. It is what it is. Neighbouring Countries have been at loggerheads with one another since 1200AD. Its nothing new.
